    How far do Gazelles run? - growth patterns of regular firms, high growth firms and startups

    High growth firms receive a lot attention from policy and academia. In this paper we investigate the general validity of an investor startup database in studying high growth firms and growth persistence. To do so, we match Dutch administrative firm level panel data with this startup database. We establish two main facts. First, although the vast majority of high growth firms in the Dutch economy does not appear in the database, included firms do have a higher probability of being a high growth firm. Second, in contrast to regular Dutch firms and previous findings in the literature, startups show a strikingly persistent growth pattern: their growth phases are prolonged. We conclude that commercial startup databases can complement more traditional data sources, but interpretation requires care due to unclear selection in the database.</p

    Mass modification of D-meson at finite density in QCD sum rule

    We evaluate the mass shift of isospin-averaged D-meson in the nuclear medium. Borel-transformed QCD sum rules are used to describe an interaction between the D-meson and a nucleon by taking into account all the lowest dimension-4 operators in the operator product expansion (OPE). We find at normal matter density the D-meson mass shift is about 10 times (\sim 50 MeV) larger than that of J/\psi. This originates from the fact that the dominant contribution in the OPE for the D-meson is the nucleon matrix element of m_c\bar{q}q, where m_c is the charm-quark mass and q denotes light quarks. We also discuss that the mass shift of the D-meson in nuclear matter may cause the level crossings of the charmonium states and the D\bar{D} threshold.     We extend our earlier model of qqˉq\bar q mesons using relativistic quasipotential (QP) wave equations to include open-flavor states and running quark-gluon coupling effects. Global fits to meson spectra are achieved with rms deviations from experiment of 43-50 MeV.     Galaxy Motions, Turbulence and Conduction in Clusters of Galaxies

    Unopposed radiative cooling in clusters of galaxies results in excessive mass deposition rates. However, the cool cores of galaxy clusters are continuously heated by thermal conduction and turbulent heat diffusion due to minor mergers or the galaxies orbiting the cluster center. These processes can either reduce the energy requirements for AGN heating of cool cores, or they can prevent overcooling altogether. We perform 3D MHD simulations including field-aligned thermal conduction and self-gravitating particles to model this in detail. Turbulence is not confined to the wakes of galaxies but is instead volume-filling, due to the excitation of large-scale g-modes. We systematically probe the parameter space of galaxy masses and numbers. For a wide range of observationally motivated galaxy parameters, the magnetic field is randomized by stirring motions, restoring the conductive heat flow to the core. The cooling catastrophe either does not occur or it is sufficiently delayed to allow the cluster to experience a major merger that could reset conditions in the intracluster medium. Whilst dissipation of turbulent motions is negligible as a heat source, turbulent heat diffusion is extremely important; it predominates in the cluster center. However, thermal conduction becomes important at larger radii, and simulations without thermal conduction suffer a cooling catastrophe. Conduction is important both as a heat source and to reduce stabilizing buoyancy forces, enabling more efficient diffusion. Turbulence enables conduction, and conduction enables turbulence. In these simulations, the gas vorticity---which is a good indicator of trapped g-modes--increases with time. The vorticity growth is approximately mirrored by the growth of the magnetic field, which is amplified by turbulence.Comment: Submitted to MNRA

    Does inter-vertebral range of motion increase after spinal manipulation? A prospective cohort study.

    Background: Spinal manipulation for nonspecific neck pain is thought to work in part by improving inter-vertebral range of motion (IV-RoM), but it is difficult to measure this or determine whether it is related to clinical outcomes. Objectives: This study undertook to determine whether cervical spine flexion and extension IV-RoM increases after a course of spinal manipulation, to explore relationships between any IV-RoM increases and clinical outcomes and to compare palpation with objective measurement in the detection of hypo-mobile segments. Method: Thirty patients with nonspecific neck pain and 30 healthy controls matched for age and gender received quantitative fluoroscopy (QF) screenings to measure flexion and extension IV-RoM (C1-C6) at baseline and 4-week follow-up between September 2012-13. Patients received up to 12 neck manipulations and completed NRS, NDI and Euroqol 5D-5L at baseline, plus PGIC and satisfaction questionnaires at follow-up. IV-RoM accuracy, repeatability and hypo-mobility cut-offs were determined. Minimal detectable changes (MDC) over 4 weeks were calculated from controls. Patients and control IV-RoMs were compared at baseline as well as changes in patients over 4 weeks. Correlations between outcomes and the number of manipulations received and the agreement (Kappa) between palpated and QF-detected of hypo-mobile segments were calculated. Results: QF had high accuracy (worst RMS error 0.5o) and repeatability (highest SEM 1.1o, lowest ICC 0.90) for IV-RoM measurement. Hypo-mobility cut offs ranged from 0.8o to 3.5o. No outcome was significantly correlated with increased IV-RoM above MDC and there was no significant difference between the number of hypo-mobile segments in patients and controls at baseline or significant increases in IV-RoMs in patients. However, there was a modest and significant correlation between the number of manipulations received and the number of levels and directions whose IV-RoM increased beyond MDC (Rho=0.39, p=0.043). There was also no agreement between palpation and QF in identifying hypo-mobile segments (Kappa 0.04-0.06). Conclusions: This study found no differences in cervical sagittal IV-RoM between patients with non-specific neck pain and matched controls. There was a modest dose-response relationship between the number of manipulations given and number of levels increasing IV-RoM - providing evidence that neck manipulation has a mechanical effect at segmental levels.     Gully cut- and- fill cycles as related to agromanagement : a historical curve number simulation in the Tigray Highlands

    Gully cut-and-fill dynamics are often thought to be driven by climate and/or deforestation related to population pressure. However, in this case-study of nine representative catchments in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands, we find that neither climate changes nor deforestation can explain gully morphology changes over the twentieth century. Firstly, by using a Monte Carlo simulation to estimate historical catchment-wide curve numbers, we show that the landscape was already heavily degraded in the nineteenth and early twentieth century – a period with low population density. The mean catchment-wide curve number (> 80) one century ago was, under the regional climatic conditions, already resulting in considerable simulated historical runoff responses. Secondly, twentieth century land-cover and runoff coefficient changes were confronted with twentieth century changing gully morphologies. As the results show, large-scale land-cover changes and deforestation cannot explain the observed processes. The study therefore invokes interactions between authigenic factors, small-scale plot boundary changes, cropland management and sociopolitical forces to explain the gully cut processes. Finally, semi-structured interviews and sedistratigraphic analysis of three filled gullies confirm the dominant impact of (crop)land management (tillage, check dams in gullies and channel diversions) on gully cut-and-fill processes. Since agricultural land management – including land tenure and land distribution – has been commonly neglected in earlier related research, we argue therefore that it can be a very strong driver of twentieth century gully morphodynamics

    Gaugino production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV

    Motivated by hints for a light Standard Model-like Higgs boson and a shift in experimental attention towards electroweak supersymmetry particle production at the CERN LHC, we update in this paper our precision predictions at next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD matched to resummation at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for direct gaugino pair production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Tables of total cross sections are presented together with the corresponding scale and parton density uncertainties for benchmark points adopted recently by the experimental collaborations, and figures are presented for up-to-date model lines attached to them. Since the experimental analyses are currently obtained with parton showers matched to multi-parton matrix elements, we also analyze the precision of this procedure by comparing invariant-mass and transverse-momentum distributions obtained in this way to those obtained with threshold and transverse-momentum resummation.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables; version to appear in JHE
