    Weaving histories : the transformation of the handloom industry in South India, 1800-1960

    Weaving Histories looks at the economic history of South Asia from a fresh perspective, through a detailed study of the handloom industry of South India between 1800 and 1960, drawing out its wider implications for the Indian economy. It employs an unusual array of sources, including paintings and textile samples as well as archival records, to excavate the links between cotton growing, cleaning, spinning and weaving before the nineteenth century. The rupture and re-configuration of these links produced a sea-change in the lives of ordinary weavers. Weaving Histories examines the configuration of forceslocal, regional, national and globalthat drove this transformation, and uncovers its effects on different groups of weavers. The handloom industry is used as a case study to throw light on the historical emergence of the 'informal sector' in India, and to re-examine contemporary debates about industrialisation and economic development

    CD44 and variants in melanocytic skin neoplasms

    Expression of cell surface molecules that mediate cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions largely contributes to the ability of melanoma cells to migrate and spread beyond the primary site of the tumor. CD44, the principal cell-surface receptor for hyaluronate, and its numerous splice variants have been reported to play a crucial role in invasion and the metastatic process of different human neoplasms, including primary malignant melanoma (PMM). The aim of this study was to clarify which isoforms of CD44 (standard CD44 and CD44 variants) are distributed in PMM with a vertical tumor thickness of >1.4 mm. Staining of CD44 standard (CD44s) and splice variants was further examined for diagnostic and prognostic relevance in a panel of melanocytic skin lesions. Ten cases of PMM with Breslow >1.4 mm were analysed by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies specific for CD44s and the splice variants v3, v5, v6, v7, v7-8, and v10. In addition, using anti-CD44s, v5, and v6 antibodies, 55 melanocytic lesions, including dermal nevi (n=12), Clark nevi (dysplastic nevi) (CN; n=11), melanoma in situ (Mis; n=8), PMM (n=18), and cutaneous metastasis of malignant melanoma (cMMM; n=6) were assessed. Staining intensities were scored visually and evaluated by means of a staining index. In ten cases of PMM with a Breslow index >1.4 mm positive staining was ascertained for CD44s, v5 and for v6 in three cases. No staining was found for v3, v7, v7-8, and v10. Examination of CD44s, v5, and v6 in 55 melanocytic skin lesions revealed a high index for CD44s in all specimens and a weak staining of v5 in Mis; dermal nevi and CN did not stain for v5. However, in PMM and cMMM we found v5 to be strongly positive. The isoform v6 showed a variable index only in PMM, but without connection to established prognostic criteria. We conclude that CD44s and splice variants can not be regarded as indicators for tumor progression in malignant melanomas. However, v5 may potentially serve as a diagnostic marker for melanocytic skin lesions. (C) Munksgaard 1998

    he embryonic Wnt/β-catenin (‘canonical’) pathway has been implicated in epithelial regeneration. To investigate the role of Wnt signal transduction in the airways, we characterised the expression of key pathway components in human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) and studied the influence of cell density on pathway activity, using sub-confluent cells in log-phase growth as a simple model of repairing epithelium. Primary HBEC and H292 bronchial epithelial cells were found to express TCF-4, TCF-3 and isoforms of LEF-1, transcription factors that are regulated by Wnt signalling. The cells also had the potential to respond to Wnt signalling through expression of several members of the Frizzled receptor family, including FZD-5 and -6. In confluent H292 cells, 20 mM lithium and 25% v/v Wnt-3a conditioned medium induced 4.5-fold (p = 0.008) and 1.4-fold (p = 0.006) increases in TOPflash activity, respectively. Under conditions of reduced cell density, TOPflash activity increased 1.8-fold (p = 0.002) in association with increased nuclear localisation of hypophosphorylated (active) β-catenin and increased cell proliferation. This up-regulation in reporter activity occurred independently of EGF receptor activation and could not be recapitulated by use of low-calcium medium to disrupt cadherin-mediated cell–cell adhesion, but was associated with changes in FZD-6 expression. We conclude that reactivation of this embryonic pathway may play an important role in bronchial epithelial regeneration, and that modulation of Fzd-6 receptors may regulate Wnt signalling at confluence. Recognising that many chronic inflammatory disorders of the airways involve epithelial damage and repair, altered Wnt signalling might contribute to disease pathogenesis or progression

    Black money in India: Fighting specters and fostering relations

    Since the 1950s, public discourse in India has referred to black money: undeclared or illicit income, sometimes in foreign accounts. Black money - so as to circumvent state taxes and controls - pervaded ordinary exchange and political financing. Today, large purchases have white and black ratios; public figures vow to retrieve black money in Swiss accounts. Black money is, at once, a means to transact business, a barometer of value, an elusive specter, and a moral outrage. It suggests how money can be differentiated, converted, corrupted, and disguised. This chapter is based on an ethnographic study of a Mumbai neighborhood marked by migration and informality. It examines the generation of black money from the diversion of publicly subsidized goods, the community’s assessment of these practices, and possible conduits for such income. Black money, I suggest, can be understood as a moral critique of money’s spectral and pernicious character, as well as a productive hinge between transactional orders and an expression of relational ties
