    National audienceThis article presents a ACR project entitled "Organization and functioning of the first farmers society. Structures of the ceramic productions from Liguria to Catalonia ". After a general presentation of this ACR, we evoke the principal characteristics of the early Neolithic ceramic productions in the Mediterranean area. Some methodological aspects concerning the analysis of these productions are more particularly discussed. The latter emanate from a documentary assessment and fix the main methodological options. The results obtained from the sites of Caucade, Peiro Signado and Pont Castling-High are then presented. They concern the very first Neolithic establishments in south of France at the beginning of the sixth millennium BC.Cet article présente un projet ACR intitulé " Organisation et fonctionnement des premières sociétés paysannes. Structures des productions céramiques de la Ligurie à la Catalogne ". Après une présentation générale de cette ACR, nous évoquons les principales caractéristiques des productions céramiques du Néolithique ancien méditerranéen. Certains aspects méthodologiques concernant l'analyse de ces productions sont plus particulièrement discutés. Ces derniers émanent d'un bilan documentaire réalisé dans le cadre du projet et fixent les principales options méthodologiques retenues. Les résultats obtenus à partir des sites de Caucade, Peiro Signado et Pont de Roque-Haute sont ensuite présentés.     New insights on Neolithic food and mobility patterns of Mediterranean coastal populations

    The aims of this research are to explore the diet, mobility, social organization, and environmental exploitation patterns of early Mediterranean farmers, particularly the role of marine and plant resources in these foodways. In addition, this work strives to document possible gendered patterns of behavior linked to the neolithization of this ecologically rich area. To achieve this, a set of multiproxy analyses (isotopic analyses, dental calculus, microremains analysis, ancient DNA) were performed on an exceptional deposit (n = 61) of human remains from the Les Bréguières site (France), dating to the transition of the sixth to the fifth millennium BCE. Materials and Methods: The samples used in this study were excavated from the Les Bréguières site (Mougins, Alpes-Maritimes, France), located along the southeastern Mediterranean coastline of France. Stable isotope analyses (C, N) on bone collagen (17 coxal bones, 35 craniofacial elements) were performed as a means to infer protein intake during tissue development. Sulfur isotope ratios were used as indicators of geographical and environmental points of origin. The study of ancient dental calculus helped document the consumption of plants. Strontium isotope analysis on tooth enamel (n = 56) was conducted to infer human provenance and territorial mobility. Finally, ancient DNA analysis was performed to study maternal versus paternal diversity within this Neolithic group (n = 30). Results: Stable isotope ratios for human bones range from −20.3 to −18.1¿ for C, from 8.9 to 11.1¿ for N and from 6.4 to 15¿ for S. Domestic animal data range from −22.0 to −20.2¿ for C, from 4.1 to 6.9¿ for N, and from 10.2 to 12.5¿ for S. Human enamel 87Sr/86Sr range from 0.7081 to 0.7102, slightly wider than the animal range (between 0.7087 and 0.7096). Starch and phytolith microremains were recovered as well as other types of remains (e.g., hairs, diatoms, fungal spores). Starch grains include Triticeae type and phytolith includes dicotyledons and monocot types as panicoid grasses. Mitochondrial DNA characterized eight different maternal lineages: H1, H3, HV (5.26%), J (10.53%), J1, K, T (5.2%), and U5 (10.53%) but no sample yielded reproducible Y chromosome SNPs, preventing paternal lineage characterization. Discussion: Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios indicate a consumption of protein by humans mainly focused on terrestrial animals and possible exploitation of marine resources for one male and one undetermined adult. Sulfur stable isotope ratios allowed distinguishing groups with different geographical origins, including two females possibly more exposed to the sea spray effect. While strontium isotope data do not indicate different origins for the individuals, mitochondrial lineage diversity from petrous bone DNA suggests the burial includes genetically differentiated groups or a group practicing patrilocality. Moreover, the diversity of plant microremains recorded in dental calculus provide the first evidence that the groups of Les Bréguières consumed a wide breadth of plant foods (as cereals and wild taxa) that required access to diverse environments. This transdisciplinary research paves the way for new perspectives and highlights the relevance for novel research of contexts (whether recently discovered or in museum collections) excavated near shorelines, due to the richness of the biodiversity and the wide range of edible resources available

    This paper discusses Neolithic and Copper Age Liguria, Braudel’s ‘island’, a mountain chain situated between the Mediterranean and the Po plain. The Neolithic colonisation of western Liguria and the Mediterranean coasts of France happened a short time (as little as one century) after that of southern Italy and before either central Italy, Corsica or Sardinia; excavations at the Arene Candide cave confirm that the initial Neolithic is characterised by Impressa ware, followed by a Cardial phase, and that it is a full Neolithic, complete with cereals and domestic animals. The colonists appear to have chosen an area where later Mesolithic hunter-gatherers are not attested, although they traded for lithic materials with the neighbouring hunter-gatherer populations of eastern Liguria. The importance of the ophiolites of Liguria is indicated by the trade in polished axes as far as Puglia, by inclusions in early Neolithic pottery and by the finding of Hordeum pollen dated 6222-5990 cal BC in a core from the prehistoric lagoon at Sestri Levante. In the Cardial phase, western Liguria became part of a larger cultural area including southern France. In the following centuries, in the context of the middle Neolithic Square-Mouthed Pottery culture, the region took on its historical role as the gateway between the Mediterranean and the Po plain. The later Neolithic Chassey culture, shared with southern France, comprised the development of mountain pastoralism and cheesemaking, which facilitated the exploitation of mountain resources such as copper that began in this period

    Depuis environ dix millénaires, l’Homme a appris à gérer et produire ses propres ressources alimentaires. En Ligurie, l’exploitation du milieu marin proche et l’acquisition des techniques agropastorales au moment de la néolithisation (VIemillénaire av. J.-C.) sont mises en évidence par les études archéologiques et paléoenvironnementales. Cependant, connaître la prépondérance de l’utilisation d’un milieu par rapport à un autre et l’évolution de ces choix de subsistance, au cours du Néolithique, n’est pas chose aisée. La présence de restes humains (sépultures) et d’animaux (couches d’habitat) a permis l’utilisation de méthodes isotopiques et notamment l’étude du δ13C et du δ15N du collagène, témoin de l’origine des ressources protéiniques consommées. Cette méthode tente, d’une part, d’appréhender l’importance ou non des protéines d’origine marine dans l’alimentation des premiers agropasteurs et, d’autre part, de cerner les différences alimentaires qui ont pu exister au sein des populations. Deux sites néolithiques côtiers ont fait l’objet de notre étude : Pendimoun (France) et Arene Candide (Italie). Les résultats montrent, entre autres, l’absence de consommation régulière de ressources marines et des différences alimentaires au sein des populations.For the last ten millennia humans have learned how to manage and produce their own food resources. In Liguria, the exploitation of the marine and coastal environment as well as the acquisition and use of agriculture and pastoralism at the time of Neolithisation (i.e. 6th millennia BC) are evidenced by both archaeological and palaeoenvironmental studies. However, it is difficult, using these methods, to determine the relative contributions to human diets made by foods from these difference sources, especially throughout the Neolithic period. The presence of human burials and animal remains from various sites from this region allows the use of isotopic methods, and in particular the study of the δ13C and δ15N values of bone collagen, which provides information on the sources of dietary protein. This method is able to determine the relative importance of marine foods in the diets of the early Neolithic agriculturalists and pastoralists, as well as indicate dietary differences between contemporary populations. Two coastal Neolithic sites were the subject of our study: Pendimoun (France) and Arene Candide (Italy). The results show, contrary to expectations, the absence of regular consumption of marine resources and the food differences within the populations

    The coming of the Greeks to Provence and Corsica: Y-chromosome models of archaic Greek colonization of the western Mediterranean

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The process of Greek colonization of the central and western Mediterranean during the Archaic and Classical Eras has been understudied from the perspective of population genetics. To investigate the Y chromosomal demography of Greek colonization in the western Mediterranean, Y-chromosome data consisting of 29 YSNPs and 37 YSTRs were compared from 51 subjects from Provence, 58 subjects from Smyrna and 31 subjects whose paternal ancestry derives from Asia Minor Phokaia, the ancestral embarkation port to the 6<sup>th </sup>century BCE Greek colonies of Massalia (Marseilles) and Alalie (Aleria, Corsica).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>19% of the Phokaian and 12% of the Smyrnian representatives were derived for haplogroup E-V13, characteristic of the Greek and Balkan mainland, while 4% of the Provencal, 4.6% of East Corsican and 1.6% of West Corsican samples were derived for E-V13. An admixture analysis estimated that 17% of the Y-chromosomes of Provence may be attributed to Greek colonization. Using the following putative Neolithic Anatolian lineages: J2a-DYS445 = 6, G2a-M406 and J2a1b1-M92, the data predict a 0% Neolithic contribution to Provence from Anatolia. Estimates of colonial Greek vs. indigenous Celto-Ligurian demography predict a maximum of a 10% Greek contribution, suggesting a Greek male elite-dominant input into the Iron Age Provence population.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Given the origin of viniculture in Provence is ascribed to Massalia, these results suggest that E-V13 may trace the demographic and socio-cultural impact of Greek colonization in Mediterranean Europe, a contribution that appears to be considerably larger than that of a Neolithic pioneer colonization.</p

    Neutralising Antibodies against Ricin Toxin

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have listed the potential bioweapon ricin as a Category B Agent. Ricin is a so-called A/B toxin produced by plants and is one of the deadliest molecules known. It is easy to prepare and no curative treatment is available. An immunotherapeutic approach could be of interest to attenuate or neutralise the effects of the toxin. We sought to characterise neutralising monoclonal antibodies against ricin and to develop an effective therapy. For this purpose, mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were produced against the two chains of ricin toxin (RTA and RTB). Seven mAbs were selected for their capacity to neutralise the cytotoxic effects of ricin in vitro. Three of these, two anti-RTB (RB34 and RB37) and one anti-RTA (RA36), when used in combination improved neutralising capacity in vitro with an IC50 of 31 ng/ml. Passive administration of association of these three mixed mAbs (4.7 µg) protected mice from intranasal challenges with ricin (5 LD50). Among those three antibodies, anti-RTB antibodies protected mice more efficiently than the anti-RTA antibody. The combination of the three antibodies protected mice up to 7.5 hours after ricin challenge. The strong in vivo neutralising capacity of this three mAbs combination makes it potentially useful for immunotherapeutic purposes in the case of ricin poisoning or possibly for prevention

    Genomic and dietary discontinuities during the Mesolithic and Neolithic in Sicily

    Sicily is a key region for understanding the agricultural transition in the Mediterranean because of its central position. Here, we present genomic and stable isotopic data for 19 prehistoric Sicilians covering the Mesolithic to Bronze Age periods (10,700-4,100 yBP). We find that Early Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (HGs) from Sicily are a highly drifted lineage of the Early Holocene western European HGs, whereas Late Mesolithic HGs carry ∼20% ancestry related to northern and (south) eastern European HGs, indicating substantial gene flow. Early Neolithic farmers are genetically most similar to farmers from the Balkans and Greece, with only ∼7% of ancestry from local Mesolithic HGs. The genetic discontinuities during the Mesolithic and Early Neolithic match the changes in material culture and diet. Three outlying individuals dated to ∼8,000 yBP; however, suggest that hunter-gatherers interacted with incoming farmers at Grotta dell'Uzzo, resulting in a mixed economy and diet for a brief interlude at the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition.Funding.     Brain death and postmortem organ donation: Report of a questionnaire from the CENTER-TBI study

    Background: We aimed to investigate the extent of the agreement on practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. Methods: Investigators from 67 Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study centers completed several questionnaires (response rate: 99%). Results: Regarding practices around brain death, we found agreement on the clinical evaluation (prerequisites and neurological assessment) for brain death determination (BDD) in 100% of the centers. However, ancillary tests were required for BDD in 64% of the centers. BDD for nondonor patients was deemed mandatory in 18% of the centers before withdrawing life-sustaining measures (LSM). Also, practices around postmortem organ donation varied. Organ donation after circulatory arrest was forbidden in 45% of the centers. When withdrawal of LSM was contemplated, in 67% of centers the patients with a ventricular drain in situ had this removed, either sometimes or all of the time. Conclusions: This study showed both agreement and some regional differences regarding practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation. We hope our results help quantify and understand potential differences, and provide impetus for current dialogs toward further harmonization of practices around brain death and postmortem organ donation

    Variation in Structure and Process of Care in Traumatic Brain Injury: Provider Profiles of European Neurotrauma Centers Participating in the CENTER-TBI Study.

    INTRODUCTION: The strength of evidence underpinning care and treatment recommendations in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is low. Comparative effectiveness research (CER) has been proposed as a framework to provide evidence for optimal care for TBI patients. The first step in CER is to map the existing variation. The aim of current study is to quantify variation in general structural and process characteristics among centers participating in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study. METHODS: We designed a set of 11 provider profiling questionnaires with 321 questions about various aspects of TBI care, chosen based on literature and expert opinion. After pilot testing, questionnaires were disseminated to 71 centers from 20 countries participating in the CENTER-TBI study. Reliability of questionnaires was estimated by calculating a concordance rate among 5% duplicate questions. RESULTS: All 71 centers completed the questionnaires. Median concordance rate among duplicate questions was 0.85. The majority of centers were academic hospitals (n = 65, 92%), designated as a level I trauma center (n = 48, 68%) and situated in an urban location (n = 70, 99%). The availability of facilities for neuro-trauma care varied across centers; e.g. 40 (57%) had a dedicated neuro-intensive care unit (ICU), 36 (51%) had an in-hospital rehabilitation unit and the organization of the ICU was closed in 64% (n = 45) of the centers. In addition, we found wide variation in processes of care, such as the ICU admission policy and intracranial pressure monitoring policy among centers. CONCLUSION: Even among high-volume, specialized neurotrauma centers there is substantial variation in structures and processes of TBI care. This variation provides an opportunity to study effectiveness of specific aspects of TBI care and to identify best practices with CER approaches
