Thermal performance of diamond field-effect transistors
In this report, the thermal performance of a hydrogen (H)-terminated diamond field-effect transistor (FET) is investigated using Raman spectroscopy and electrothermal device modeling. First, the thermal conductivity (Îşdiamond) of the active diamond channel was determined by measuring the temperature rise of transmission line measurement structures under various heat flux conditions using nanoparticle-assisted Raman thermometry. Using this approach, Îşdiamond was estimated to be 1860âW/mâK with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 1610 to 2120âW/mâK. In conjunction with measured electrical output characteristics, this Îş was used as an input parameter for an electrothermal device model of an H-terminated diamond FET. The simulated thermal response showed good agreement with surface temperature measurements acquired using nanoparticle-assisted Raman thermometry. These diamond-based structures were highly efficient at dissipating heat from the active device channel with measured device thermal resistances as low as âź1âmmâK/W. Using the calibrated electrothermal device model, the diamond FET was able to operate at a very high power density of 40âW/mm with a simulated temperature rise of âź33âK. Finally, the thermal resistance of these lateral diamond FETs was compared to lateral transistor structures based on other ultrawide bandgap materials (Al0.70Ga0.30N, β-Ga2O3) and wide bandgap GaN for benchmarking. These results indicate that the thermal resistance of diamond-based lateral transistors can be up to âź10Ă lower than GaN-based devices and âź50Ă lower than other UWBG devices
The nature of the high Galactic latitude O-star HD93521: new results from X-ray and optical spectroscopy
Owing to its unusual location and its isolation, the nature of the high
Galactic latitude O9.5Vp object HD93521 is still uncertain. We have collected
X-ray and optical observations to characterize the star and its surroundings.
X-ray images and spectra are analyzed to search for traces of a recent star
formation event around HD93521 and to search for the signature of a possible
compact companion. Optical echelle spectra are analysed with plane-parallel
model atmosphere codes, assuming either a spherical star or a gravity darkened
rotationally flattened star, to infer the effective temperature and surface
gravity, and to derive the He, C, N and O abundances of HD93521. The X-ray
images reveal no traces of a population of young low-mass stars coeval with
HD93521. The X-ray spectrum of HD93521 is consistent with a normal late O-type
star although with subsolar metallicity. No trace of a compact companion is
found in the X-ray data. In the optical spectrum, He and N are found to be
overabundant, in line with the effect of rotational mixing in this very fast
rotator, whilst C and O are subsolar. A critical comparison with the properties
of subdwarf OB stars, indicates that, despite some apparent similarities,
HD93521 does not belong to this category. Despite some ambiguities on the
runaway status of the star, the most likely explanation is that HD93521 is a
Population I massive O-type star that was ejected from the Galactic plane
either through dynamical interactions or a result of a supernova event in a

The stb Operon Balances the Requirements for Vegetative Stability and Conjugative Transfer of Plasmid R388
The conjugative plasmid R388 and a number of other plasmids carry an operon, stbABC, adjacent to the origin of conjugative transfer. We investigated the role of the stbA, stbB, and stbC genes. Deletion of stbA affected both conjugation and stability. It led to a 50-fold increase in R388 transfer frequency, as well as to high plasmid loss. In contrast, deletion of stbB abolished conjugation but provoked no change in plasmid stability. Deletion of stbC showed no effect, neither in conjugation nor in stability. Deletion of the entire stb operon had no effect on conjugation, which remained as in the wild-type plasmid, but led to a plasmid loss phenotype similar to that of the R388ÎstbA mutant. We concluded that StbA is required for plasmid stability and that StbA and StbB control conjugation. We next observed the intracellular positioning of R388 DNA molecules and showed that they localize as discrete foci evenly distributed in live Escherichia coli cells. Plasmid instability of the R388ÎÎstbA mutant correlated with aberrant localization of the plasmid DNA molecules as clusters, either at one cell pole, at both poles, or at the cell center. In contrast, plasmid molecules in the R388ÎÎstbB mutant were mostly excluded from the cell poles. Thus, results indicate that defects in both plasmid maintenance and transfer are a consequence of variations in the intracellular positioning of plasmid DNA. We propose that StbA and StbB constitute an atypical plasmid stabilization system that reconciles two modes of plasmid R388 physiology: a maintenance mode (replication and segregation) and a propagation mode (conjugation). Paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder and depressive symptoms: clinical correlates and CBT treatment outcomes.
Depression frequently co-occurs with paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet the clinical correlates and impact of depression on CBT outcomes remain unclear. The prevalence and clinical correlates of depression were examined in a paediatric specialist OCD-clinic sample (Nâ=â295; Meanâ=â15 [7 - 18] years, 42 % female), using both dimensional (Beck Depression Inventory-youth; nâ=â261) and diagnostic (Development and Wellbeing Assessment; nâ=â127) measures of depression. The impact of depressive symptoms and suspected disorders on post-treatment OCD severity was examined in a sub-sample who received CBT, with or without SSRI medication (Nâ=â100). Fifty-one per-cent of patients reported moderately or extremely elevated depressive symptoms and 26 % (95 % CI: 18 - 34) met criteria for a suspected depressive disorder. Depressive symptoms and depressive disorders were associated with worse OCD symptom severity and global functioning prior to CBT. Individuals with depression were more likely to be female, have had a psychiatric inpatient admission and less likely to be attending school (psâ<â0.01). OCD and depressive symptom severity significantly decreased after CBT. Depressive symptoms and depressive disorders predicted worse post-treatment OCD severity (βsâ=â0.19 and 0.26, psâ<â0.05) but became non-significant when controlling for pre-treatment OCD severity (βsâ=â0.05 and 0.13, ns). Depression is common in paediatric OCD and is associated with more severe OCD and poorer functioning. However, depression severity decreases over the course of CBT for OCD and is not independently associated with worse outcomes, supporting the recommendation for treatment as usual in the presence of depressive symptoms
Localization of Non-Linearly Modeled Autonomous Mobile Robots Using Out-of-Sequence Measurements
This paper presents a state of the art of the estimation algorithms dealing with Out-of-Sequence (OOS) measurements for non-linearly modeled systems. The state of the art includes a critical analysis of the algorithm properties that takes into account the applicability of these techniques to autonomous mobile robot navigation based on the fusion of the measurements provided, delayed and OOS, by multiple sensors. Besides, it shows a representative example of the use of one of the most computationally efficient approaches in the localization module of the control software of a real robot (which has non-linear dynamics, and linear and non-linear sensors) and compares its performance against other approaches. The simulated results obtained with the selected OOS algorithm shows the computational requirements that each sensor of the robot imposes to it. The real experiments show how the inclusion of the selected OOS algorithm in the control software lets the robot successfully navigate in spite of receiving many OOS measurements. Finally, the comparison highlights that not only is the selected OOS algorithm among the best performing ones of the comparison, but it also has the lowest computational and memory cost
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at

Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version

Compressed representation of a partially defined integer function over multiple arguments
In OLAP (OnLine Analitical Processing) data are analysed in an n-dimensional cube. The cube may be represented as a partially defined function over n arguments. Considering that often the function is not defined everywhere, we ask: is there a known way of representing the function or the points in which it is defined, in a more compact manner than the trivial one
Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of
