    Topical Treatment with Cord Blood Serum in Glaucoma Patients: A Preliminary Report

    Purpose. To report data happened to be observed in two glaucoma patients treated with Cord Blood Serum (CBS) eyedrops. Design. Case report. Retrospective data analysis Methods. CBS topical eyedrops, characterized in advance for growth factors (GFs) content, were administered for two months with the aim to relieve their subjective symptoms, in two patients who had referred ocular surface discomfort, although in absence of any sign of keratopathy. As patients were also affected by advanced glaucoma at risk of vision loss, and under treatment with hypotensive drugs, they had been also monitored over the same period with IOP controls and Visual field tests in our Unit. Results. During subsequent visits, data from Mean Deviation and Pattern Standard Deviation in the Visual fields were retrospectively collected and compared before and after treatment with CBS, and an amelioration was observed. Conclusions. CBS contains a combination of GFs, which potentially exert a neuroprotective action and candidate CBS as an interesting natural source to be delivered in neurodegenerative ocular disorders. The incidentally observed amelioration in these two patients deserves further investigation in this respec

    Scaling analysis of the magnetic monopole mass and condensate in the pure U(1) lattice gauge theory

    We observe the power law scaling behavior of the monopole mass and condensate in the pure compact U(1) gauge theory with the Villain action. In the Coulomb phase the monopole mass scales with the exponent \nu_m=0.49(4). In the confinement phase the behavior of the monopole condensate is described with remarkable accuracy by the exponent \beta_{exp}=0.197(3). Possible implications of these phenomena for a construction of a strongly coupled continuum U(1) gauge theory are discussed.Comment: Added references [1

    Current treatment goals are achieved by the majority of patients with atopic dermatitis treated with tralokinumab: results from a multicentric, multinational, retrospective, cohort study

    Background: Tralokinumab is a human monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-13 that is approved for the treatment of moderate-severe atopic dermatitis. Studies analyzing the efficacy and safety of tralokinumab in a real-world setting are scarce. Research design and methods: A European, multicentric, real-world, retrospective cohort study was defined to assess the effectiveness and safeness profile of tralokinumab, investigating the achievement of pre-specified treatment goals; and to detect potential differences in terms of effectiveness and safeness across some selected patient subcohorts. Results: A total of 194 adult patients were included in this study. A significant improvement in physician-assessed disease severity was detected at each follow-up visit as compared with baseline and similar trend was observed for patient-reported outcomes and quality of life. No meaningful difference in effectiveness was found when considering patient age (<65 versus ≥65 years), neither dissecting patient cohort in dupilumab-naive vs dupilumab-treated subjects. Among tralokinumabtreated patients, 88% achieved at least one currently identified real-world therapeutic goal at week 16. Conclusions: This retrospective multicenter study confirmed the effectiveness and safeness of tralokinumab throughout 32 weeks of observation, showing the achievement of therapeutic goals identified in both trial and real-world settings in a large proportion of tralokinumab-treated patients

    Laser-induced etching of few-layer graphene synthesized by Rapid-Chemical Vapour Deposition on Cu thin films

    The outstanding electrical and mechanical properties of graphene make it very attractive for several applications, Nanoelectronics above all. However a reproducible and non destructive way to produce high quality, large-scale area, single layer graphene sheets is still lacking. Chemical Vapour Deposition of graphene on Cu catalytic thin films represents a promising method to reach this goal, because of the low temperatures (T < 900 Celsius degrees) involved during the process and of the theoretically expected monolayer self-limiting growth. On the contrary such self-limiting growth is not commonly observed in experiments, thus making the development of techniques allowing for a better control of graphene growth highly desirable.     Search for CP violation in D+→ϕπ+ and D+s→K0Sπ+ decays

    A search for CP violation in D + → ϕπ + decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP -violating asymmetry is measured to be (−0.04 ± 0.14 ± 0.14)% for candidates with K − K + mass within 20 MeV/c 2 of the ϕ meson mass. A search for a CP -violating asymmetry that varies across the ϕ mass region of the D + → K − K + π + Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the D+s→K0Sπ+ decay is measured to be (0.61 ± 0.83 ± 0.14)%

    Search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π±

    A search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π± is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0  fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help us to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs0→π+π- and Bs0→DD- . Systematic uncertainties are minimized by using B0→D*∓π± as a normalization channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Bs0→D*∓π±)<6.1(7.8)×10-6 at 90% (95%) confidence level

    Perspectives on the Trypanosoma cruzi-host cell receptor interaction

    Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The critical initial event is the interaction of the trypomastigote form of the parasite with host receptors. This review highlights recent observations concerning these interactions. Some of the key receptors considered are those for thromboxane, bradykinin, and for the nerve growth factor TrKA. Other important receptors such as galectin-3, thrombospondin, and laminin are also discussed. Investigation into the molecular biology and cell biology of host receptors for T. cruzi may provide novel therapeutic targets

    Results on high-energy cosmic rays by EAS-TOP at Gran Sasso

    Very High-Energy cosmic rays have to be studied through the ground-based detectors of the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) that they produce in the atmosphere. The main measurements to be performed are of: primary energy spectra, composition, anisotropies, «neutral primary» astronomy, and interaction properties. This requires complete detectors of all the EAS components, and for this purpose the EAS-TOP array has been constructed at Campo Imperatore (2000 m a.s.l.) on top of the Gran Sasso underground laboratories. The array has been progressively going into operation since 1988. In this paper we present the status and performances of the different detectors, and the results obtained up to now on the different items under discussion

    This paper traces the fragility of the subject in the period extending from the aftermath of the Sexenio through to the early twentieth century. In particular, two case studies are focused upon: the question of gender “deviance” and the figure of the genius, in order to understand how medicine participated in the construction of “outsider” identities within the context of the emerging liberal order. How did liberal rationales exclude or curtail certain wayward expressions of identity and subjectivity? What consequences did the marking of “excessive” figures or outsiders have for notions of inclusiveness and citizenship within the late-nineteenth-century liberal order? By concentrating primarily on medical texts and journals published during the period, this study builds on existing research to tease out answers to these questions
