Conductivity Due to Classical Phase Fluctuations in a Model For High-T_c Superconductors
We consider the real part of the conductivity, \sigma_1(\omega), arising from
classical phase fluctuations in a model for high-T_c superconductors. We show
that the frequency integral of that conductivity, \int_0^\infty \sigma_1
d\omega, is non-zero below the superconducting transition temperature ,
provided there is some quenched disorder in the system. Furthermore, for a
fixed amount of quenched disorder, this integral at low temperatures is
proportional to the zero-temperature superfluid density, in agreement with
experiment. We calculate \sigma_1(\omega) explicitly for a model of overdamped
phase fluctuations.Comment: 4pages, 2figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Tilt Modulus and Angle-Dependent Flux Lattice Melting in the Lowest Landau Level Approximation
For a clean high-T superconductor, we analyze the Lawrence-Doniach free
energy in a tilted magnetic field within the lowest Landau level (LLL)
approximation. The free energy maps onto that of a strictly -axis field, but
with a reduced interlayer coupling. We use this result to calculate the tilt
modulus of a vortex lattice and vortex liquid. The vortex contribution
to can be expressed in terms of the squared -axis Josephson plasmon
frequency . The transverse component of the field has very
little effect on the position of the melting curve.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Instability of generalised AdS black holes and thermal field theory
We study black holes in AdS-like spacetimes, with the horizon given by an
arbitrary positive curvature Einstein metric. A criterion for classical
instability of such black holes is found in the large and small black hole
limits. Examples of large unstable black holes have a B\"ohm metric as the
horizon. These, classically unstable, large black holes are locally
thermodynamically stable. The gravitational instability has a dual description,
for example by using the version of the AdS/CFT
correspondence. The instability corresponds to a critical temperature of the
dual thermal field theory defined on a curved background.Comment: 1+16 pages. 1 figure. LaTeX. Minor clarification
Two methods for assessment of choline status in a randomized crossover study with varying dietary choline intake in people: Isotope dilution MS of plasma and in vivo single-voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy of liver
Background: Choline deficiency has numerous negative health consequences; although the preponderance of the US population consumes less than the recommended Adequate Intake (AI), clinical assessment of choline status is difficult. Further, several pathways involved in primary metabolism of choline are estrogen-sensitive and the AI for premenopausal women is lower than that for men. Objectives: We sought to determine whether in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of liver and/or isotope-dilution MS of plasma could identify biomarkers reflective of choline intake (preregistered primary outcomes 1 and 2, secondary outcome 1). Determination of whether biomarker concentrations showed sex dependence was a post hoc outcome. This substudy is a component of a larger project to identify a clinically useful biomarker panel for assessment of choline status. Methods: In a double-blind, randomized, crossover trial, people consumed 3 diets, representative of ∼100%, ∼50%, and ∼25% of the choline AI, for 2-wk periods. We measured the concentrations of choline and several metabolites using 1H single-voxel MRS of liver in vivo and using 2H-labeled isotope dilution MS of several choline metabolites in extracted plasma. Results: Plasma concentrations of 2H9-choline, unlabeled betaine, and 2H9-betaine, and the isotopic enrichment ratio (IER) of betaine showed highly significant between-diet effects (q < 0.0001), with unlabeled betaine concentration decreasing 32% from highest to lowest choline intake. Phosphatidylcholine IER was marginally significant (q = 0.03). Unlabeled phosphatidylcholine plasma concentrations did not show between-diet effects (q = 0.34). 2H9 (trimethyl)-phosphatidylcholine plasma concentrations (q = 0.07) and MRS-measured total soluble choline species liver concentrations (q = 0.07) showed evidence of between-diet effects but this was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Although MRS is a more direct measure of choline status, variable spectral quality limited interpretation. MS analysis of plasma showed clear correlation of plasma betaine concentration, but not plasma phosphatidylcholine concentration, with dietary choline intake. Plasma betaine concentrations also correlate with sex status (premenopausal women, postmenopausal women, men)
Imunomodulacija i oksidativni stres u radnika u pjeskarenju traper platna: promjene uzrokovane izloženosti silici
Workers in denim sandblasting are at a high risk of developing silicosis, an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica dust. The development and progress of silicosis is associated with the activation of the immune system and oxidative stress. In the former, interferon-gamma induces both neopterin release and the enzyme indoleamine [2,3]-dioxygenase (IDO) in various cells. The determination of the kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio and neopterin concentration has proven to be an efficient method to monitor the activation status of IDO and cellular immunity. The present study aimed to investigate whether occupational silica exposure leads to any alterations in neopterin levels, tryptophan degradation, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), agents in the antioxidant defence system. Fifty-five male denim sandblasting workers and twenty-two healthy men as controls were included. Mean neopterin and kynurenine levels, kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio, and SOD activity were higher in subjects with silicosis compared to non-exposed controls (all, p<0.05). Neopterin levels and kynurenine-totryptophan ratios were positively correlated (p<0.05); however, no correlation was observed between length of employment and the measured parameters. Some of the measured parameters were significantly affected by the severity of the pathology. Our results suggest that silica exposure activates the cellular immune response. The increased neopterin levels and tryptophan degradation confirm the possibility of their use as an indicator of cellular immune response. Ovaj rad istražuje uzrokuje li profesionalna izloženost silici promjene u razinama neopterina, degradaciji triptofana i aktivnosti superoksid dismutaze (SOD) i katalaze (CAT), agenata u antioksidativnom obrambenom sustavu.
Obstructions to the Existence of Sasaki-Einstein Metrics
We describe two simple obstructions to the existence of Ricci-flat Kahler
cone metrics on isolated Gorenstein singularities or, equivalently, to the
existence of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on the links of these singularities. In
particular, this also leads to new obstructions for Kahler-Einstein metrics on
Fano orbifolds. We present several families of hypersurface singularities that
are obstructed, including 3-fold and 4-fold singularities of ADE type that have
been studied previously in the physics literature. We show that the AdS/CFT
dual of one obstruction is that the R-charge of a gauge invariant chiral
primary operator violates the unitarity bound.Comment: 35 pages, 1 figure; references and a footnote adde

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited
by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to
ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm.
System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen

photons per MeV.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Astroparticle Physic
The transition form factors for semi-leptonic weak decays of in QCD sum rules
Within the Standard Model, we investigate the semi-leptonic weak decays of
. The various form factors of transiting to a single charmed
meson () are studied in the framework of the QCD sum rules.
These form factors fully determine the rates of the weak semi-leptonic decays
of and provide valuable information about the non-perturbative QCD
effects. Our results indicate that the decay rate of the semi-leptonic weak
decay mode is at order of .Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures, revised version to be published in Eur.Phys.J.

Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The elliptic, , triangular, , and quadrangular, , azimuthal
anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles,
pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the
event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the
pseudo-rapidity range at different collision centralities and as a
function of transverse momentum, , out to GeV/.
The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on
transverse momentum for GeV/. The small dependence
of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane
and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow
fluctuations up to GeV/. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton
elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least
GeV/ indicating that the particle type dependence persists out
to high .Comment: 16 pages, 5 captioned figures, authors from page 11, published
