Rapid toxicity detection in water quality control utilizing automated multispecies biomonitoring for permanent space stations
The objective of this study was to evaluate proposed design characteristics and applications of automated biomonitoring devices for real-time toxicity detection in water quality control on-board permanent space stations. The contested and contingent outcomes of Thatcherism in the UK
The death of Margaret Thatcher in April 2013 sparked a range of discussions and debates about the significance of her period in office and the political project to which she gave her name: Thatcherism. This article argues that Thatcherism is best understood as a symbolically important part of the emergence of first-phase neoliberalism. It engages with contemporary debates about Thatcherism among Marxist commentators and suggests that several apparently divergent positions can help us now reach a more useful analysis of Thatcherism’s short- and long-term outcomes for British political economy. The outcomes identified include: an initial crisis in the neoliberal project in the UK; the transformation of the party political system to be reflective of the politics of neoliberalism, rather than its contestation; long-term attempts at the inculcation of the neoliberal individual; de-industrialisation and financial sector dependence; and a fractured and partially unconscious working class. In all long-term outcomes, the contribution of Thatcherism is best understood as partial and largely negative, in that it cleared the way for a longer-term and more constructive attempt to embed neoliberal political economy. The paper concludes by suggesting that this analysis can inform current debates on the left of British politics about how to oppose and challenge the imposition of neoliberal discipline today
Crystal structure of monomeric human β-2- microglobulin reveals clues to its amyloidogenic properties
Dissociation of human β-2-microglobulin (β(2)m) from the heavy chain of the class I HLA complex is a critical first step in the formation of amyloid fibrils from this protein. As a consequence of renal failure, the concentration of circulating monomeric β(2)m increases, ultimately leading to deposition of the protein into
amyloid fibrils and development of the disorder, dialysis-related amyloidosis. Here we present the crystal structure of a monomeric form of human β(2)m determined at 1.8-Å resolution that reveals remarkable structural changes relative to the HLA-bound protein. These involve the restructuring of a β bulge that separates two
short β strands to form a new six-residue β strand at one edge of this β sandwich protein. These structural changes remove key features proposed to have evolved to protect β sheet proteins from aggregation [Richardson, J.&Richardson, D. (2002) Proc. Natl. Acad.
Sci. USA 99, 2754–2759] and replaces them with an aggregationcompetent surface. In combination with solution studies using (1)H NMR, we show that the crystal structure presented here represents a rare species in solution that could provide important clues about the mechanism of amyloid formation from the normally highly
soluble native protein
First Results from the DRIFT-IIa Dark Matter Detector
Data from the DRIFT-IIa directional dark matter experiment are presented,
collected during a near continuous 6 month running period. A detailed
calibration analysis comparing data from gamma-ray, x-ray and neutron sources
to a GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations reveals an efficiency for detection of
neutron induced recoils of 94+/-2(stat.)+/-5(sys.)%. Software-based cuts,
designed to remove non-nuclear recoil events, are shown to reject 60Co
gamma-rays with a rejection factor of better than 8x10-6 for all energies above
threshold. An unexpected event population has been discovered and is shown here
to be due to the alpha-decay of 222Rn daughter nuclei that have attached to the
central cathode. A limit on the flux of neutrons in the Boulby Underground

Narrow Line X-Ray Calibration Source for High Resolution Microcalorimeters
We are developing a narrow line calibration source for use with X-ray microcalorimeters. At energies below 300 electronvolts fluorescent lines are intrinsically broad, making calibration of high resolution detectors difficult. This source consists of a 405 nanometers (3 electronvolts) laser diode coupled to an optical fiber. The diode is pulsed to create approximately one hundred photons in a few microseconds. If the pulses are short compared to the rise time of the detector, they will be detected as single events with a total energy in the soft X-ray range. Poisson fluctuations in photon number per pulse create a comb of X-ray lines with 3 electronvolts spacing, so detectors with energy resolution better than 2 electronvolts are required to resolve the individual lines. Our currently unstabilized diode has a multimode width less than 1 nanometer, giving a 300 electronvolt event a Full width at half maximum (FWHM) less than 0.1 electronvolts. By varying the driving voltage, or pulse width, the source can produce a comb centered on a wide range of energies. The calibration events are produced at precisely known times. This allows continuous calibration of a flight mission without contaminating the observed spectrum and with minimal deadtime
11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 regulates glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle
OBJECTIVE: Glucocorticoid excess is characterized by increased adiposity, skeletal myopathy, and insulin resistance, but the precise molecular mechanisms are unknown. Within skeletal muscle, 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11beta-HSD1) converts cortisone (11-dehydrocorticosterone in rodents) to active cortisol (corticosterone in rodents). We aimed to determine the mechanisms underpinning glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and indentify how 11beta-HSD1 inhibitors improve insulin sensitivity. \ud
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Rodent and human cell cultures, whole-tissue explants, and animal models were used to determine the impact of glucocorticoids and selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibition upon insulin signaling and action. \ud
RESULTS: Dexamethasone decreased insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, decreased IRS1 mRNA and protein expression, and increased inactivating pSer insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1. 11beta-HSD1 activity and expression were observed in human and rodent myotubes and muscle explants. Activity was predominantly oxo-reductase, generating active glucocorticoid. A1 (selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibitor) abolished enzyme activity and blocked the increase in pSer IRS1 and reduction in total IRS1 protein after treatment with 11DHC but not corticosterone. In C57Bl6/J mice, the selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibitor, A2, decreased fasting blood glucose levels and improved insulin sensitivity. In KK mice treated with A2, skeletal muscle pSer IRS1 decreased and pThr Akt/PKB increased. In addition, A2 decreased both lipogenic and lipolytic gene expression.\ud
CONCLUSIONS: Prereceptor facilitation of glucocorticoid action via 11beta-HSD1 increases pSer IRS1 and may be crucial in mediating insulin resistance in skeletal muscle. Selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibition decreases pSer IRS1, increases pThr Akt/PKB, and decreases lipogenic and lipolytic gene expression that may represent an important mechanism underpinning their insulin-sensitizing action
The acquisition of Sign Language: The impact of phonetic complexity on phonology
Research into the effect of phonetic complexity on phonological acquisition has a long history in spoken languages. This paper considers the effect of phonetics on phonological development in a signed language. We report on an experiment in which nonword-repetition methodology was adapted so as to examine in a systematic way how phonetic complexity in two phonological parameters of signed languages — handshape and movement — affects the perception and articulation of signs. Ninety-one Deaf children aged 3–11 acquiring British Sign Language (BSL) and 46 hearing nonsigners aged 6–11 repeated a set of 40 nonsense signs. For Deaf children, repetition accuracy improved with age, correlated with wider BSL abilities, and was lowest for signs that were phonetically complex. Repetition accuracy was correlated with fine motor skills for the youngest children. Despite their lower repetition accuracy, the hearing group were similarly affected by phonetic complexity, suggesting that common visual and motoric factors are at play when processing linguistic information in the visuo-gestural modality
Measuring Dust Production in the Small Magellanic Cloud Core-Collapse Supernova Remnant 1E 0102.2-7219
We present mid-infrared spectral mapping observations of the core-collapse
supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud using the
InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The remnant shows
emission from fine structure transitions of neon and oxygen as well as
continuum emission from dust. Comparison of the mid-IR dust emission with
observations at x-ray, radio and optical wavelengths shows that the dust is
associated with the supernova ejecta and is thus newly formed in the remnant.
The spectrum of the newly formed dust is well reproduced by a model that
includes 3x10^-3 solar masses of amorphous carbon dust at 70 K and 2x10^-5
solar masses of Mg2SiO4 (forsterite) at 145 K. Our observations place a lower
limit on the amount of dust in the remnant since we are not sensitive to the
cold dust in the unshocked ejecta. We compare our results to observations of
other core-collapse supernovae and remnants, particularly Cas A where very
similar spectral mapping observations have been carried out. We observe a a
factor of ~10 less dust in E 0102 than seen in Cas A, although the amounts of
amorphous carbon and forsterite are comparable.Comment: submitted to Ap
Murchison Widefield Array and XMM-Newton observations of the Galactic supernova remnant G5.9+3.1
In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the
so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9+3.1. We present the
radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9+3.1 obtained
with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with
the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated
radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an
archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray
emission from this remnant. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple
power-law relation. The synchrotron radio spectral index of G5.9+3.1, is
estimated to be 0.420.03 and the integrated flux density at 1GHz to be
around 2.7Jy. Furthermore, we propose that the identified point radio source,
located centrally inside the SNR shell, is most probably a compact remnant of
the supernova explosion. The shell-like X-ray morphology of G5.9+3.1 as
revealed by XMM-Newton broadly matches the spatial distribution of the radio
emission, where the radio-bright eastern and western rims are also readily
detected in the X-ray while the radio-weak northern and southern rims are weak
or absent in the X-ray. Extracted MOS1+MOS2+PN spectra from the whole SNR as
well as the north, east, and west rims of the SNR are fit successfully with an
optically thin thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium with
a column density N_H~0.80x cm and fitted temperatures spanning
the range kT~0.14-0.23keV for all of the regions. The derived electron number
densities n_e for the whole SNR and the rims are also roughly comparable
(ranging from ~ cm to ~ cm, where f
is the volume filling factor). We also estimate the swept-up mass of the X-ray
emitting plasma associated with G5.9+3.1 to be ~.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Economies of space and the school geography curriculum
This paper is about the images of economic space that are found in school curricula. It suggests the importance for educators of evaluating these representations in terms of the messages they contain about how social processes operate. The paper uses school geography texts in Britain since the 1970s to illustrate the different ways in which economic space has been represented to students, before exploring some alternative resources that could be used to provide a wider range of representations of economic space. The paper highlights the continued importance of understanding the politics of school knowledge
