    A computer calculation of the expected angular distribution of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) from micrometer size polystyrene spheres based on a Mie-type model, and a pilot experiment to test the feasibility of measuring CARS angular distributions from micrometer size polystyrene spheres by simply suspending them in water are discussed. The computer calculations predict a very interesting structure in the angular distributions that depends strongly on the size and relative refractive index of the spheres

    A strong-motion earthquake recorder for the direct measurement of one point on the response spectrum curve is described, and results obtained with the instrument under field conditions are compared with those obtained by a standard spectrum analysis of accelerograph records. The device has the advantages of low initial cost and of low maintenance expense, and can thus be installed in relatively large numbers. A network of such instruments located at points having various local geological conditions is proposed as a supplement to the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey strong-motion seismograph system

    A General Framework for Complex Time-Driven Simulations on Hypercubes

    We describe a general framework for building and running complex time-driven simulations with several levels of concurrency. The framework has been implemented on the Caltech/JPL Mark IIIfp hypercube using the Centaur communications protocol. Our framework allows the programmer to break the hypercube up into one or more subcubes of arbitrary size (task parallelism). Each subcube runs a separate application using data parallelism and synchronous communications internal to the subcube. Communications between subcubes are performed with asynchronous messages. Subcubes can each define their own parameters and commands which drive their particular application. These are collected and organized by the Control Processor (CP) in order that the entire simulation can be driven from a single command-driven shell. This system allows several programmers to develop disjoint pieces of a large simulation in parallel and to then integrate them with little effort. Each programmer is, of course, also able to take advantage of the separate data and I/O processors on each hypercube node in order to overlap calculation and communication (on-board parallelism) as well as the pipelined floating point processor on each node (pipelined processor parallelism). We show, as an example of the framework, a large space defense simulation. Functions (sensing, tracking, etc.) each comprise a subcube; functions are collected into defense platforms (satellites); and many platforms comprise the defense architecture. Software in the CP uses simple input to determine the node allocation to each function based on the desired defense architecture and number of platforms simulated in the hypercube. This allows many different architectures to be simulated. The set of simulated platforms, the results, and the messages between them are shown on color graphics displays. The methods used herein can be generalized to other simulations of a similar nature in a straightforward manner

    Opioid Use Among Those Who Have Criminal Justice Experience: Harm Reduction Strategies to Lessen HIV Risk

    Purpose of Review: We reviewed the HIV and opioid literature relevant to harm reduction strategies for those with criminal justice experience. Recent Findings: Opioid use in the United States has risen at an alarming rate recently. This has led to increased numbers of people who inject drugs, placing new populations at risk for HIV, including those who have criminal justice experience. In recent years, there has been a gradual decrease in the number of individuals under the supervision of the criminal justice system. However, concurrently, there has been a rise in the number of individuals incarcerated in jails in rural counties that are at the center of the current opioid epidemic. Summary: We provide a number of harm reduction strategies that could be implemented in correctional settings such as access and linkage to medication-assisted treatment, connection to syringe exchange programs and safe injection facilities (where available), and the repackaging of pre-exposure prophylaxis as a harm reduction tool

    Measuring capital in active addiction and recovery: the development of the strengths and barriers recovery scale (SABRS).

    BACKGROUND: The international Life In Recovery (LiR) surveys have provided an important message to the public and policy makers about the reality of change from addiction to recovery, consistently demonstrating both that there are marked gains across a range of life domains and that the longer the person is in recovery the better their recovery strengths and achievements. However, to date, no attempt has been made to quantify the Life In Recovery scales and to assess what levels of change in removing barriers and building strengths is achieved at which point in the recovery journey. METHODS: The current study undertakes a preliminary analysis of strengths and barriers from the Life in Recovery measure, using data from a European survey on drug users in recovery (n = 480), and suggests that the instrument can be edited into a Strengths And Barriers Recovery Scale (SABRS). The new scale provides a single score for both current recovery strengths and barriers to recovery. RESULTS: The resulting data analysis shows that there are stepwise incremental changes in recovery strengths at different recovery stages, but these occur with only very limited reductions in barriers to recovery, with even those in stable recovery typically having at least two barriers to their quality of life and wellbeing. Greater strengths in active addiction are associated with greater strengths and resources in recovery. CONCLUSION: As well as demonstrating population changes in each of the domains assessed, the current study has shown the potential of the Life In Recovery Scale as a measure of recovery capital that can be used to support recovery interventions and pathways
