Some ecological aspects of free-living Haemaphysalis juxtakochi Cooley, 1946 (Acari: Ixodidae) in Panama
Objective. To describe the seasonal variation and perform a comparative analysis on habitat
preference of Haemaphysalis juxtakochi in Panama. Materials and methods. Ticks were collected
from the vegetation, using a white cloth, between January 2009 and March 2010, in four site located
in Summit Municipal Park (SMP), two in wooded area (WA) and two in grasslands (GR).The ticks were
determined as larvae, nymphs and adults of H. juxtakochi. The number of ticks collected in each
area was employed to describe the seasonal distribution of both immature and adult stages, and the
non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test. Results. A total of 2.338 ticks in WA and 560 ticks in GR were
collected. The major peak of adults from May to July, nymphs peaked from January to April and the
peak of larvae abundance from December and January. There was a significant difference in the number
of ticks collected in the two areas for each tick stage (larvae, mean number (MN) in WA 120.14, MN
in GR 57.07, P: 0.02; nymphs, MN in WA 46.42, MN in GR 16.38, P: 0.018; adults, MN in WA 6.64,
MN in GR 1.78, P: 0.02). Conclusions. The results suggest that H. juxtakochi maintains a one-year
cycle in the study areas. This cycle would be characterized by the immature population peaks in the
dry season; while adults are distributed throughout year, with a peak in the transition from the rainy
and dry. Moreover, H. juxtakochi was more abundant in forests than in grasslands, which could lead
to a better adaptation to forested conditions.

suponer mejores adaptaciones a condiciones boscosas.Fil: García G., Gleydis. Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas de Estudios de la Salud; PanamáFil: Castro D.F., Angélica. Economic analysis of an agrosilvipastoral system for a mountainous area in Zona da Mata Mineira, Brazil
The objective of this work was to evaluate the economic viability of an agrosilvipastoral system developed for Zona da Mata mountainous areas in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, as well as to compare different options for wood (Eucalyptus grandis and Acacia mangium) commercialization of the second thinning. The data were obtained from a 10 year-old agrosilvipastoral system established in four hectares at Embrapa Gado de Leite station in Coronel Pacheco, MG, Brazil. As evaluation criteria for the economic viability analysis, the adopted methods were the net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR), both calculated at 6% interest rate. Despite the small difference, adding value to forest products increased the attractiveness of the proposed system. Considered separately, the agricultural activity was impracticable, whereas the forestry and livestock activities were independently viable. The studied system seems to be equally tolerant to price variations for forest and livestock products, as well as strongly tolerant to variations in production costs
Impurity effects in unconventional density waves in the unitary limit
We investigate the effect of strong, nonmagnetic impurities on
quasi-one-dimensional conventional and unconventional density waves (DW and
UDW). The conventional case remains unaffected similarly to s-wave
superconductors in the presence of weak, nonmagnetic impurities. The
thermodynamic properties of UDW were found to be identical to those of a d-wave
superconductor in the unitary limit. The real and imaginary part of the optical
conductivity is determined for electric fields applied in the perpendicular
directions. A new structure can be present corresponding to excitations from
the bound state at the Fermi energy to the gap maximum in addition to the usual
peak at 2\Delta. In the dc limit, universal electric conductivity is found.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Association of cardiovascular risk factors with carotid intima media thickness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis with low disease activity compared to controls: A cross-sectional study
Objectives Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been identified as an independent cardiovascular risk factor. The importance of risk factors such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia in the generation of atherosclerosis in RA patients is unclear. This study analyzed clinical parameters associated with carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) in patients with RA. Methods Subjects with RA and healthy controls without RA, both without known cardiovascular disease, were included. Participants underwent a standard physical examination and laboratory measurements including a lipid profile. cIMT was measured semi-automatically by ultrasound. Results In total 243 RA patients and 117 controls were included. The median RA disease duration was 7 years (IQ
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final
