Bayesian Inversion of Stokes Profiles
[abridged] Inversion techniques are the most powerful methods to obtain
information about the thermodynamical and magnetic properties of solar and
stellar atmospheres. In the last years, we have witnessed the development of
highly sophisticated inversion codes that are now widely applied to
spectro-polarimetric observations. The majority of these inversion codes are
based on the optimization of a complicated non-linear merit function. However,
no reliable and statistically well-defined confidence intervals can be obtained
for the parameters inferred from the inversions. A correct estimation of the
confidence intervals for all the parameters that describe the model is
mandatory. Additionally, it is fundamental to apply efficient techniques to
assess the ability of models to reproduce the observations and to what extent
the models have to be refined or can be simplified. Bayesian techniques are
applied to analyze the performance of the model to fit a given observed Stokes
vector. The posterior distribution, is efficiently sampled using a Markov Chain
Monte Carlo method. For simplicity, we focus on the Milne-Eddington approximate
solution of the radiative transfer equation and we only take into account the
generation of polarization through the Zeeman effect. However, the method is
extremely general and other more complex forward models can be applied. We
illustrate the ability of the method with the aid of academic and realistic
examples. We show that the information provided by the posterior distribution
turns out to be fundamental to understand and determine the amount of

Competition for Cooperation: variability, benefits and heritability of relational wealth in hunter-gatherers
Many defining human characteristics including theory of mind, culture and language relate to our sociality, and facilitate the formation and maintenance of cooperative relationships. Therefore, deciphering the context in which our sociality evolved is invaluable in understanding what makes us unique as a species. Much work has emphasised group-level competition, such as warfare, in moulding human cooperation and sociality. However, competition and cooperation also occur within groups; and inter-individual differences in sociality have reported fitness implications in numerous non-human taxa. Here we investigate whether differential access to cooperation (relational wealth) is likely to lead to variation in fitness at the individual level among BaYaka hunter-gatherers. Using economic gift games we find that relational wealth: a) displays individual-level variation; b) provides advantages in buffering food risk, and is positively associated with body mass index (BMI) and female fertility; c) is partially heritable. These results highlight that individual-level processes may have been fundamental in the extension of human cooperation beyond small units of related individuals, and in shaping our sociality. Additionally, the findings offer insight in to trends related to human sociality found from research in other fields such as psychology and epidemiology
Dynamic moisture loss explored through quantitative super-resolution microscopy, spatial micro-viscosity and macroscopic analyses in acid milk gels
Molecular interactions and dynamic changes at a range of length scales affect the structuring of food materials, as such it is essential to explore structure at a range of different length scales. Herein, four acid milk gel samples are produced from either fresh or reconstituted skim milk that either had no heat treatment or had undergone heat treatment at 85 °C for 10 min. Milk acid gels demonstrate complex structure on a range of length scales of interest in colloidal materials and exhibit different macroscopic and water binding properties. A method is presented to measure the dynamic moisture loss in these samples, without applying external force. Super-resolution microscopy images are quantitatively analysed to describe the gel microstructure with precise features. Fluorescent Lifetime Imaging Microscopy is used to spatially resolve differences in molecular confinement across the sample's microstructure, which is quantified for each sample. Moisture loss and microstructural analyses are correlated to bulk and macroscopic properties determined through rheological and texture analysis, pH and conductivity measurements. More severe thermal and processing treatments leads to a reduction in moisture loss over time. Differences in moisture loss and mechanical properties relate to different thermal processing histories, but are not fully explained by levels of denatured whey proteins, and appear related to changes in mineral balance. The methods presented provide a comprehensive and complementary overview of material properties across relevant length scales and relevant sample conditions.</p

Absorptive capacity and market orientation in public service provision

Drawing on absorptive capacity literature, this is the first study to examine the role of the organisation's learning environment on the market orientation-performance interface for two opposing public management contexts. The research involved a national survey questionnaire to 1060 internal and external public leisure service providers in England. Empirical testing through structural equation modelling revealed that not all dimensions of market orientation are universally positive and marketing scholars should seek to examine and understand market orientation in the context of the organisation and its learning mechanisms, as absorptive capacity has clear and different moderation effects under different management contexts. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Do we harm others even if we don't need to?
Evolutionary explanations of the co-existence of large-scale cooperation and warfare in human societies rest on the hypothesis of parochial altruism, the view that in-group pro-sociality and out-group anti-sociality have co-evolved. We designed an experiment that allows subjects to freely choose between actions that are purely pro-social, purely anti-social, or a combination of the two. We present behavioral evidence on the existence of strong aggression-a pattern of non-strategic behaviors that are welfare-reducing for all individuals (i.e., victims and perpetrators). We also show how strong aggression serves to dynamically stabilize in-group pro-sociality
The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Bayesian Inference for Gas Disk Kinematics using a Hierarchical Gaussian Mixture Model
We present a novel Bayesian method, referred to as Blobby3D, to infer gas
kinematics that mitigates the effects of beam smearing for observations using
Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS). The method is robust for regularly rotating
galaxies despite substructure in the gas distribution. Modelling the gas
substructure within the disk is achieved by using a hierarchical Gaussian
mixture model. To account for beam smearing effects, we construct a modelled
cube that is then convolved per wavelength slice by the seeing, before
calculating the likelihood function. We show that our method can model complex
gas substructure including clumps and spiral arms. We also show that kinematic
asymmetries can be observed after beam smearing for regularly rotating galaxies
with asymmetries only introduced in the spatial distribution of the gas. We
present findings for our method applied to a sample of 20 star-forming galaxies
from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We estimate the global H gas velocity
dispersion for our sample to be in the range [7, 30] km
s. The relative difference between our approach and estimates using the
single Gaussian component fits per spaxel is for the H flux-weighted mean velocity

False Beliefs About Asylum Seekers to Australia: The Role of Confidence in Such Beliefs, Prejudice, and the Third Person Effect
There has been much controversy about the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia in recent years, with the Australian Government continuing to enforce a very hard-line stance on asylum seekers who arrive to Australia by boat. The present study examined attitudes towards asylum seekers using 164 Australian community members during June 2015 by way of questionnaire. Our primary research question involved how five variables predicted false beliefs about asylum seekers. Specifically, we measured prejudice, the third-person effect, and confidence in the answers given to false beliefs about asylum seekers. Regression results indicated that the main predictors of false beliefs were right-wing political orientation, prejudice, confidence in espousing false beliefs, and the third-person effect (politicians). Furthermore, most of our community participants accepted a large number of false beliefs as being true, with approximately two-thirds of our participants scoring above the midpoint. This reflects similar findings over the last decade or so. Our results indicate that, if one believes in bottom-up change, a more nuanced approach needs to be undertaken with community anti-prejudice interventions
