    Nutritional management for reproductive efficiency

    Nutrition influences reproductive efficiency and the survival of lambs and weaners but the costs of supplementary feeding or maintaining low stocking rates are not justified by the resulting income from higher lamb weaning rates and reduced weaner mortality. The current practice of segmenting the ewe flock using ultrasound scanning to determine the number of foetuses still results in groups of ewes with a wide range of condition scores and with widely differing nutritional requirements. This report describes an approach to precision management of pregnant ewes and weaners that is based on the e-sheep platform of technologies and uses computer-directed drafting for nutritional management of individual animals and walk-through weighing to monitor changing nutritional status. It is estimated that the cost of feeding a thousand-ewe flock can be reduced from 14,000forfeedingallanimalsto14,000 for feeding all animals to 3300 for targeted feeding of 25% of ewes requiring additional nutrition and 20% of weaners at risk of dying. The cost of the targeted feeding strategy is more than justified by the value of additional 12-month-old animals, which is $9000. The e-sheep precision nutrition system is not attractive to industry at this stage because of the cost of the e-sheep infrastructure, the perceived complexity of the technology and the requirement for further research, but it is expected to be a commercial option within three years

    Irrotational binary neutron stars in quasiequilibrium

    We report on numerical results from an independent formalism to describe the quasi-equilibrium structure of nonsynchronous binary neutron stars in general relativity. This is an important independent test of controversial numerical hydrodynamic simulations which suggested that nonsynchronous neutron stars in a close binary can experience compression prior to the last stable circular orbit. We show that, for compact enough stars the interior density increases slightly as irrotational binary neutron stars approach their last orbits. The magnitude of the effect, however, is much smaller than that reported in previous hydrodynamic simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revtex, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Causality in quantum teleportation: information extraction and noise effects in entanglement distribution

    Quantum teleportation is possible because entanglement allows a definition of precise correlations between the non-commuting properties of a local system and corresponding non-commuting properties of a remote system. In this paper, the exact causality achieved by maximal entanglement is analyzed and the results are applied to the transfer of effects acting on the entanglement distribution channels to the teleported output state.     Relativistic Models for Binary Neutron Stars with Arbitrary Spins

    We introduce a new numerical scheme for solving the initial value problem for quasiequilibrium binary neutron stars allowing for arbitrary spins. The coupled Einstein field equations and equations of relativistic hydrodynamics are solved in the Wilson-Mathews conformal thin sandwich formalism. We construct sequences of circular-orbit binaries of varying separation, keeping the rest mass and circulation constant along each sequence. Solutions are presented for configurations obeying an n=1 polytropic equation of state and spinning parallel and antiparallel to the orbital angular momentum. We treat stars with moderate compaction ((m/R) = 0.14) and high compaction ((m/R) = 0.19). For all but the highest circulation sequences, the spins of the neutron stars increase as the binary separation decreases. Our zero-circulation cases approximate irrotational sequences, for which the spin angular frequencies of the stars increases by 13% (11%) of the orbital frequency for (m/R) = 0.14 ((m/R) = 0.19) by the time the innermost circular orbit is reached. In addition to leaving an imprint on the inspiral gravitational waveform, this spin effect is measurable in the electromagnetic signal if one of the stars is a pulsar visible from Earth.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures.     Hadronic top-quark pair production in association with a hard jet at next-to-leading order QCD: Phenomenological studies for the Tevatron and the LHC

    We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top--antitop-quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for integrated and differential cross sections are presented. We find a significant reduction of the scale dependence. In most cases the corrections are below 20% indicating that the perturbative expansion is well under control. Moreover, the forward--backward charge asymmetry of the top-quark, which is analyzed at the Tevatron, is studied at next-to-leading order.     DeficiĂȘncias de kacronutrientes e de boro em seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis L.)

    In order to obtain: a) a clear picture of the deficiencies symptoms of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S and B; b) the lack of the elements on the dry matter production; c) concentration of the macro and micronutrients on the leaves, stems and roots. Young rubber plants (Hevea brasiliensis L.), were cultivated in nutrients solutions, in which one the following elements were omitted at once: N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S and B. Clear out symptoms were obtained for all macronutrients and boron. The growth rate of the rubber plants were drastically affected by lack of N, K followed by other nutrients. The omission of P from the nutrient solution did not affected the growth of the plants. The levels detected by chemical analysis of the leaves from with symptoms of deficiency and without symptoms of deficiency plants were: N% = 1.94 and 3.40: P% =0.14 and 0.25; K% = 0.79 and 2.22; Ca% = 0.59 and 1.28; Mg% = 0.26 and 0.50; S% = 0.10 and 0.10; B ppm = 31-3 and 171.8.Plantas de seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis L.) foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação, em quartzo moĂ­do, irrigado com soluçÔes nutritivas, e submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: completo, omissĂŁo de N, omissĂŁo de P, omissĂŁo de Ca, omissĂŁo de Mg, omissĂŁo de S e omissĂŁo de B, com o objetivo de: (a) obter sintomas de deficiĂȘncias de macronutrientes e de boro; (b) analisar o crescimento das plantas atravĂ©s da produção de matĂ©ria seca; (c) determinar a concentração de macro e micronutrientes nas folhas, caule e raĂ­zes das plantas cultivadas nos diversos tratamentos. Os sintomas visuais de deficiĂȘncia foram identificados e descritos. As plantas foram coletadas e separadas em raiz, caule e folhas, e determinaram-se os teores de macro e micronutrientes . Os resultados mostraram: - foram identificados sintomas de deficiĂȘncias para todos os tratamentos com omissĂŁo de nutrientes (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S e B); - a omissĂŁo de N, K, Mg ou B da solução nutritiva diminuiu o crescimento das plantas; - as concentraçÔes dos elementos nas folhas de plantas com sintomas e sem sintomas de deficiĂȘncia foram, respectivamente: N% = 1,94 e 3,40; P% = 0,14 e 0,25; K% = 0,79 e 2,22; Ca% = 0,59e 1,28; Mg% = 0,26 e 0,50; S% = 0,10 e 0,10; Bppm = 31 ,3 e 171,8

    Properties of the Top Quark

    The top quark was discoverd at the CDF and D0 experiments in 1995. As the partner of the bottom quark its properties within the Standard Model are fully defined. Only the mass is a free parameter. The measurement of the top quark mass and the verification of the expected properties have been an important topic of experimental top quark physics since. In this review the recent results on top quark properties obtained by the Tevatron experiments CDF and D0 are summarised. At the advent of the LHC special emphasis is given to the basic measurement methods and the dominating systematic uncertainties.Comment: Habilitation thesis, revised and updated for publication in EPJ

    Measurement of CP observables in B± → D(⁎)K± and B± → D(⁎)π± decays

    Measurements of CP observables in B ± →D (⁎) K ± and B ± →D (⁎) π ± decays are presented, where D (⁎) indicates a neutral D or D ⁎ meson that is an admixture of D (⁎)0 and DÂŻ (⁎)0 states. Decays of the D ⁎ meson to the Dπ 0 and DÎł final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the B candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the D meson are fully reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K − and π + π − final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb −1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of s=7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of B ± →D ⁎ K ± and B ± →D ⁎ π ± decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of B ± →DK ± and B ± →Dπ ± decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements.     Prompt charm production in pp collisions at &#8730;<span style="text-decoration:overline">s</span>=7 TeV

    Charm production at the LHC in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The decays D0→K−π+, D+→K−π+π+, D⁎+→D0(K−π+)π+, D+s→ϕ(K−K+)π+, Λ+c→pK−π+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb−1. Differential cross-sections dσ/dpT are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0&#60;pT&#60;8 GeV/c and 2.0&#60;y&#60;4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above pT-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives σ(ccÂŻ)pT&#60;8 GeV/c,2.0&#60;y&#60;4.5=1419±12(stat)±116(syst)±65(frag) Όb, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions

    New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE Δ4 allele
