In Lankford, B. A.; Mahoo, H. F. (Eds.). Proceedings of East Africa Integrated River Basin Management Conference, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania, 7 ? 9 March 2005. Theme five: water economics and livelihoods. Morogoro, Tanzania: Soil-Water Management Research Group, Sokoine University of AgricultureThe need to achieve efficient, equitable and sustainable use of water resources to meet water demands of different sectors is pressing, particularly in areas where water resources are dwindling. Along with this is the quest for a good understanding of the value of water in its different uses. Using the Change in Net Income method, this paper presents an assessment of the value of water in irrigated paddy and hydroelectric power (HEP) generation in the Great Ruaha (GR) Catchment in Tanzania. The average values of water for irrigated paddy were estimated at 0.01and0.04perm3forabstractedandconsumedwaterrespectively.ForHEP,thevalueswererelativelyhigher( 0.01 and 0.04 per m3 for abstracted and consumed water respectively. For HEP, the values were relatively higher ( 0.06-0.21 per m3 for gross and consumed water respectively). Yet irrigated paddy also contributes much: it supports the livelihoods of about 30,000 agrarian families in Usangu with average annual gross income of about US $ 911.90 per annum per family and the GR paddy contributes about 14-24% to national paddy production. Understanding these benefits is key to fostering informed debate on water management and allocation, identifying the base for making ?agreeable? trade-offs, the potential for improvement, and creating linkages with water allocation options

Continuous symmetries of Lagrangians and exact solutions of discrete equations

One of the difficulties encountered when studying physical theories in discrete space-time is that of describing the underlying continuous symmetries (like Lorentz, or Galilei invariance). One of the ways of addressing this difficulty is to consider point transformations acting simultaneously on difference equations and lattices. In a previous article we have classified ordinary difference schemes invariant under Lie groups of point transformations. The present article is devoted to an invariant Lagrangian formalism for scalar single-variable difference schemes. The formalism is used to obtain first integrals and explicit exact solutions of the schemes. Equations invariant under two- and three- dimensional groups of Lagrangian symmetries are considered.Comment: 31 pages, submitted to Journal of Mathematical Physic

    Gauge transformations for higher-order lagrangians

    Get PDF
Noether's symmetry transformations for higher-order lagrangians are studied. A characterization of these transformations is presented, which is useful to find gauge transformations for higher-order singular lagrangians. The case of second-order lagrangians is studied in detail. Some examples that illustrate our results are given; in particular, for the lagrangian of a relativistic particle with curvature, lagrangian gauge transformations are obtained, though there are no hamiltonian gauge generators for them.Comment: 22 pages, LaTe

Lattice QCD Calculation for the Physical Equation of State

In this report we consider the numerical simulations at finite temperature using lattice QCD data for the computation of the thermodynamical quantities including the pressure, energy density and the entropy density. These physical quantities can be related to the equation of state for quarks and gluons. We shall apply the lattice data to the evaluation of the specific structure of the gluon and quark condensates at finite temperature in relation to the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions. Finally we mention the quantum nature of the phases at lower temperatures.Comment: 60 pages, 15 figure

How Ordinary Elimination Became Gaussian Elimination

Newton, in notes that he would rather not have seen published, described a process for solving simultaneous equations that later authors applied specifically to linear equations. This method that Euler did not recommend, that Legendre called "ordinary," and that Gauss called "common" - is now named after Gauss: "Gaussian" elimination. Gauss's name became associated with elimination through the adoption, by professional computers, of a specialized notation that Gauss devised for his own least squares calculations. The notation allowed elimination to be viewed as a sequence of arithmetic operations that were repeatedly optimized for hand computing and eventually were described by matrices.Comment: 56 pages, 21 figures, 1 tabl

Testing the inverse-Compton catastrophe scenario in the intra-day variable blazar S5 0716+71. I. Simultaneous broadband observations during November 2003

Some intra-day variable, compact extra-galactic radio sources show brightness temperatures severely exceeding 10^{12} K, the limit set by catastrophic inverse-Compton (IC) cooling in sources of incoherent synchrotron radiation. The violation of the IC limit, possible under non-stationary conditions, would lead to IC avalanches in the soft-gamma-ray energy band during transient periods. For the first time, broadband signatures of possible IC catastrophes were searched for in S5 0716+71. A multifrequency observing campaign targetting S5 0716+71 was carried out in November 2003 under the framework of the European Network for the Investigation of Galactic nuclei through Multifrequency Analysis (ENIGMA) together with a campaign by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT), involving a pointing by the soft-gamma-ray satellite INTEGRAL, optical, near-infrared, sub-millimeter, millimeter, radio, and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring. S5 0716+71 was very bright at radio frequencies and in a rather faint optical state during the INTEGRAL pointing; significant inter-day and low intra-day variability was recorded in the radio regime, while typical fast variability features were observed in the optical band. No correlation was found between the radio and optical emission. The source was not detected by INTEGRAL, neither by the X-ray monitor JEM-X nor by the gamma-ray imager ISGRI, but upper limits to the source emission in the 3-200 keV energy band were estimated. A brightness temperature Tb>2.1x10^{14} K was inferred from the radio variability, but no corresponding signatures of IC avalanches were recorded at higher energies. The absence of IC-catastrophe signatures provides either a lower limit delta>8 to the Doppler factor affecting the radio emission or strong constraints for modelling of the Compton catastrophes in S5 0716+71.Comment: 15 pages, 3 EPS figures, 3 tables, to appear in A&
