Variable Be Stars in the Perseus Constellation

    Get PDF
Over four nights between September 26th and October 23rd, the young star cluster “h Persei” was observed with a CCD camera attached to a Celestron telescope. The two stars, Oo 1278 and Oo 1282, are the primary focus of this research project. The apparent magnitudes for these two stars were plotted against time to create light curves to study the variability. Oo 1282 was found to be a variable star as its differential magnitude varies with time. Fourier Analysis found three frequencies for a multiperiodic trend of the differential magnitude for Oo 1282, but there was insufficient data to carry out the same analysis on Oo 1278. By analyzing the spectra obtained by the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria B.C, the two stars in question can be classified as early B spectral-type stars. Furthermore, Oo 1282 can be classified as a mild Be star due to the H beta line in partial emission

Environmental Niche Modelling with Desktop GARP for Wild Origanum vulgare L . (Lamiaceae) in Armenia

Predicting species’ distributions has became one of the significant components of conservation biology in recent years. During the study, GARP (genetic algorithm) has been identified the key modelling technique for determining Origanum vulgare L. (Oregano, Lamiaceae) environmental niche in the Republic of Armenia. For over three consecutive years, from 2010-2013 it has been created relevant environmental layers through ESRI ArcGIS programs to be used with the plant actual distribution (occurrence records) as input data of GARP. In the result of the study, it has been produced the fundamental and realized niche and predictive habitat distribution of O. vulgare L. with Bitmap under the global climate change. Produced Bitmap illustrates that Oregano distributions would decrease mostly in the central regions due to environmental deterioration and climate change. This research could provide significant data for future conservation planning of wild Oregano in the Republic of Armenia

Variable “Be” Stars in the Perseus Constellation

Over four nights between September 26 and October 23 2015 the young open cluster of stars named “h Persei” was observed using the Celestron Telescope at Thompson Rivers University’s observatory. The two stars Oo 1278 and Oo 1282 are the primary focus of this research project.Through prior observations by Majewska et al. (2008) the two stars in consideration have been classified as Be variable stars. Most of the stars in the night sky have variable properties, where the brightness of the star changes with respect to time.By studying the variability of stars we are able to determine physical properties of those stars. Using a CCD camera attached to the telescope, data of the stars in question were collected. The CCD images were reduced using an image software package called IRAF (Image Reduction and Analysis Facilty) and will be analyzed using daophot tasks within IRAF. The apparent magnitudes of the two stars will be found and plotted against time to create light curves to study the variability. Fourier analysis may be used to search for multiple periods if needed. The results are expected to show that both stars have a short-term variability much like other Be type stars. This study is contributing original research in this area of astronomy since these two stars were targets of only one other study and are relatively unknown

Coccinelleidae: species diversity of Mozyr and estimation of representation in families in BOLD and GenBank

    No full text
On the territory of Mozyr there are 18 species of Coccinellidae representatives thathad been collected and identified. Among them 4 species are indicated as rare for The Republic of Belarus, but 1 is included into the list of invasive alien species. The biotope № 1 includes 12 species of Coccinellidae. Nucleoid sequences of mitochondrial and nucleus genes of all analyzed species of Coccinellidae are deponed in BOLD and GenBank databases, but Coccinellidae from Belarus are poorly represented.
