BORDER CROSSINGS: CONVERSATIONS ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND CULTURES
The Spring 1997 PROVOST\u27S LECTURE SERIES, presented by the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society (ICS), offers a series of events which explore cultural interactions at the crossroads between social realities and cultural worlds. The series includes talks and events by interdisciplinary scholar and performance artist Coco Fusco; Third World scholar Barbara Harlow; and African-American cultural critic Michael Awkward.
Bringing these nationally known scholars and artists to our learning community at Bowling Green State University marks an attempt to  dare to cross borders  between the  known  and  unknown ; to gather a group of scholars, artists, and individuals who are dedicated to cultural equity and international rights; and to  take ourselves there where we do not expect, are not expected to be. Glucocorticoid receptors modulate dendritic spine plasticity and microglia activity in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease
Abstract Chronic exposure to high circulating levels of glucocorticoids (GCs) may be a key risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) development and progression. In addition, hyper-activation of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) induces brain alterations comparable to those produced by AD. In transgenic mouse models of AD, GCs increase the production of the most important and typical hallmarks of this dementia such as: Aβ40, Aβ42 and tau protein (both the total tau and its hyperphosphorylated isoforms). Moreover, GCs in brain are pivotal regulators of dendritic spine turnover and microglia activity, two phenomena strongly altered in AD. Although it is well-established that GCs primes the neuroinflammatory response in the brain to some stimuli, it is unknown whether or how GRs modulates dendritic spine plasticity and microglia activity in AD. In this study, we evaluated, using combined Golgi Cox and immunofluorescence techniques, the role of GR agonists and antagonists on dendritic spine plasticity and microglia activation in hippocampus of 3xTg-AD mice. We found that dexamethasone, an agonist of GRs, was able to significantly reduce dendritic spine density and induced proliferation and activation of microglia in CA1 region of hippocampus of 3xTg-AD mice at 6 and 10 months of age. On the contrary, the treatment with mifepristone, an antagonist of GRs, strongly enhanced dendritic spine density, decreased microglia density and improved the behavioural performance of 3xTg-AD mice. Additionally, primary microglial cells in vitro were directly activated by dexamethasone. Together, these data demonstrate that stress exacerbates AD and promotes a rapid progression of the pathology acting on both neurons and glial cells, supporting an important pro-inflammatory role of GC within CNS in AD. Consequently, these results further strengthen the need to test clinical interventions that correct GCs dysregulation as promising therapeutic strategy to delay the onset and slow down the progression of AD
Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at TeV
A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at  TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range , transverse momenta  GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range  GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}\sigma_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable 
An Unexpected Case of Opisthorchis felineus Infection Revealed during Liver Transplantation
A man with hepatitis B infection was admitted to Pisa University Hospital for hepatological evaluation, which revealed multiple cystic lesions and suggested a cirrhotic evolution. Treatment with Entecavir 0.5 mg/day was started, resulting in rapid viral load suppression and alanine aminotransferase normalization. After 10 years, imaging documented a single nodule of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and a robot-assisted nodule resection was performed. One year later, HCC recurrence prompted orthotopic liver transplantation, during which the patient died because of the sudden rupture of the donor's organ and rapid multiorgan deterioration before retransplantation. During post-mortem liver examination, adult worms were evidenced within large biliary ducts, suggesting infection with Opisthorchis or Clonorchis spp. flukes. Sequencing of the ITS2 locus, following PCR amplification of DNA extracted from liver tissue, revealed 100% identity with the reference sequence of O. felineus. Infection of the patient with O. felineus was confirmed by the presence of specific IgG detected by ELISA in the patient's sera. Two major alkaline phosphatase serum levels peaks observed during the first two years of antiviral therapy support the hypothesis that O. felineus infection worsened liver function. This case report highlights the importance of a very careful screening of parasitic infections in solid organ transplantation candidates
Modulation of the Circulating Extracellular Vesicles in Response to Different Exercise Regimens and Study of Their Inflammatory Effects
Exercise-released extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as a novel class of exerkines that promotes systemic beneficial effects. However, slight differences in the applied exercise protocols in terms of mode, intensity and duration, as well as the need for standardized protocols for EV isolation, make the comparison of the studies in the literature extremely difficult. This work aims to investigate the EV amount and EV-associated miRNAs released in circulation in response to different physical exercise regimens. Healthy individuals were subjected to different exercise protocols: acute aerobic exercise (AAE) and training (AT), acute maximal aerobic exercise (AMAE) and altitude aerobic training (AAT). We found a tendency for total EVs to increase in the sedentary condition compared to trained participants following AAE. Moreover, the cytofluorimetric analysis showed an increase in CD81(+)/SGCA(+)/CD45(-) EVs in response to AAE. Although a single bout of moderate/maximal exercise did not impact the total EV number, EV-miRNA levels were affected as a result. In detail, EV-associated miR-206, miR-133b and miR-146a were upregulated following AAE, and this trend appeared intensity-dependent. Finally, THP-1 macrophage treatment with exercise-derived EVs induced an increase of the mRNAs encoding for IL-1 beta, IL-6 and CD163 using baseline and immediately post-exercise EVs. Still, 1 h post-exercise EVs failed to stimulate a pro-inflammatory program. In conclusion, the reported data provide a better understanding of the release of circulating EVs and their role as mediators of the inflammatory processes associated with exercise
Development and Validation of a PIVKA-II-Based Model for HCC Risk Stratification in Patients With HCV-Related Cirrhosis Successfully Treated With DAA
Background and Aims: Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis with sustained virological response (SVR) to direct-acting antivirals (DAA) remain at risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recently, serum protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) has shown promising results as an HCC-predictive biomarker. We aimed to develop and validate a PIVKA-II-based model for HCC risk stratification in cirrhotic patients with SVR to DAA. Methods: A total of 1220 consecutive patients (Turin, n = 531; Pisa, n = 335; Milan, n = 354) with HCV-related cirrhosis treated with DAA were included in the study. Patients were retrospectively allocated to the training cohort (Turin+Pisa; median follow-up [FU] 39, 22–55 months; incident HCC: 93 [10.7%]) and validation cohort (Milan; median FU 49.0, 35.0–52.0 months; incident HCC: 19 [5.4%]). Serum PIVKA-II levels were measured using the LumipulseG system (Fujirebio, Japan) at SVR12 (Turin and Pisa cohorts) or the end of treatment (Milan cohort). Results: Using Cox regression analysis, a model including PIVKA-II combined with age, sex, ALT, AST, γGT, platelet count, albumin and total bilirubin was derived from the training cohort (C-index = 0.72). In the validation cohort, the model showed a C-index of 0.71 with an area under the curve of 0.84 for identifying patients who developed HCC during the first 12 months of FU. When patients were grouped into three risk categories, the cumulative incidence of HCC was 2.7%, 4.0% and 14.3% in the low-, medium- and high-risk groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Notably, no HCC occurred within 3 years of FU in the low-risk group. Conclusions: Our PIVKA-II-based model showed satisfactory accuracy for HCC risk stratification and may represent a valuable tool for implementing risk-based surveillance protocols in patients with HCV-related cirrhosis with SVR to DAA

The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets. Addressing Ethical Issues in Healthcare Artificial Intelligence Using a Lifecycle-Informed Process
OBJECTIVES: Artificial intelligence (AI) proceeds through an iterative and evaluative process of development, use, and refinement which may be characterized as a lifecycle. Within this context, stakeholders can vary in their interests and perceptions of the ethical issues associated with this rapidly evolving technology in ways that can fail to identify and avert adverse outcomes. Identifying issues throughout the AI lifecycle in a systematic manner can facilitate better-informed ethical deliberation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed existing lifecycles from within the current literature for ethical issues of AI in healthcare to identify themes, which we relied upon to create a lifecycle that consolidates these themes into a more comprehensive lifecycle. We then considered the potential benefits and harms of AI through this lifecycle to identify ethical questions that can arise at each step and to identify where conflicts and errors could arise in ethical analysis. We illustrated the approach in 3 case studies that highlight how different ethical dilemmas arise at different points in the lifecycle.
RESULTS DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Through case studies, we show how a systematic lifecycle-informed approach to the ethical analysis of AI enables mapping of the effects of AI onto different steps to guide deliberations on benefits and harms. The lifecycle-informed approach has broad applicability to different stakeholders and can facilitate communication on ethical issues for patients, healthcare professionals, research participants, and other stakeholders
Phytochemical Profiling and Untargeted Metabolite Fingerprinting of the MEDWHEALTH Wheat, Barley and Lentil Wholemeal Flours
An important research target is improving the health benefits of traditional Mediterranean, durum wheat-based foods using innovative raw materials. In this study, we characterised wholemeal flours obtained from a traditional durum wheat cv. Svevo, two innovative durum wheat varieties (Svevo-High Amylose and Faridur), the naked barley cv. Chifaa and the elite lentil line 6002/ILWL118/1-1, evaluating them for targeted phytochemicals, untargeted metabolomics fingerprints and antioxidant capacity. To this aim, individual phenolic acids, flavonoids, tocochromanols and carotenoids were identified and quantified through HPLC-DAD, and the antioxidant capacities of both the extracts and whole meals were detected by ABTS assays. An untargeted metabolomics fingerprinting of the samples was conducted through NMR spectroscopy. Results showed that the innovative materials improved phytochemical profiles and antioxidant capacity compared to Svevo. In particular, Svevo-HA and Faridur had higher contents of ferulic and sinapic acids, β-tocotrienol and lutein. Moreover, Chifaa is a rich source of phenolic acids, β-tocopherols, lutein and zeaxanthin whereas lentil of flavonoids (i.e., catechin and procyanidin B2). The NMR profiles of Svevo-HA and Faridur showed a significant reduction of sugar content, malate and tryptophan compared to that of Svevo. Finally, substantial differences characterized the lentil profiles, especially for citrate, trigonelline and phenolic resonances of secondary metabolites, such as catechin-like compounds. Overall, these results support the potential of the above innovative materials to renew the health value of traditional Mediterranean durum wheat-based products
