    Stochastic Properties of Static Friction

    The onset of frictional motion is mediated by rupture-like slip fronts, which nucleate locally and propagate eventually along the entire interface causing global sliding. The static friction coefficient is a macroscopic measure of the applied force at this particular instant when the frictional interface loses stability. However, experimental studies are known to present important scatter in the measurement of static friction; the origin of which remains unexplained. Here, we study the nucleation of local slip at interfaces with slip-weakening friction of random strength and analyze the resulting variability in the measured global strength. Using numerical simulations that solve the elastodynamic equations, we observe that multiple slip patches nucleate simultaneously, many of which are stable and grow only slowly, but one reaches a critical length and starts propagating dynamically. We show that a theoretical criterion based on a static equilibrium solution predicts quantitatively well the onset of frictional sliding. We develop a Monte-Carlo model by adapting the theoretical criterion and pre-computing modal convolution terms, which enables us to run efficiently a large number of samples and to study variability in global strength distribution caused by the stochastic properties of local frictional strength. The results demonstrate that an increasing spatial correlation length on the interface, representing geometric imperfections and roughness, causes lower global static friction. Conversely, smaller correlation length increases the macroscopic strength while its variability decreases. We further show that randomness in local friction properties is insufficient for the existence of systematic precursory slip events. Random or systematic non-uniformity in the driving force, such as potential energy or stress drop, is required for arrested slip fronts. Our model and observations..

    On the Stability of Neon Cluster Ions – Evidence for Isomeric Structures

    We have adopted the newly developed technique of growing cationic clusters in size-to-charge selected helium nanodroplets (HNDs), with subsequent removal of helium in a collision cell, to record high-resolution mass spectra of Nen+. Growth in singly charged HNDs leads to mass spectra that feature the same anomalies in the cluster ion abundance as in previous work, namely maxima at n = 14, 21, 55/56, 75. Several other, weaker but statistically significant anomalies are observed at n = 9, 26, 29, 33, 35, 69, 82, 89. However, when neon clusters are grown in larger HNDs, which are likely to be multiply charged, we observe a different set of magic numbers, at n = 7, 13, 19, 26, 29, 34, 55, 71, 81, plus many other numbers for larger clusters, up to n = 197. A transition from the first to the second set is observed in a limited size range if the collision pressure is increased. The most likely reason for the existence of two different sets of magic numbers appears to be the existence of two distinct structural families

    Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) grieve over the loss of a conspecific.

    Behavioural reactions towards a dead conspecific have been observed rarely in wild canids and there is no documented scientific evidence of grief in pet dogs. A quantitative analysis of grief-related responses in both dogs and owners was conducted, using the validated online Mourning Dog Questionnaire. The survey was completed by 426 Italian adults who had owned at least two dogs, one of whom died while the other was still alive. This research aims to explore whether, how and what a dog may experience over the loss of a companion dog. Multiple logistic regression indicates that both a friendly or parental relationship between two dogs but also the fact that dogs used to share food and the owner's grief and anger are principal predictors of negative behavioural changes. According to dog owners' answers, the surviving dog after the death of the companion dog changed both in terms of activities ("playing", "sleeping", and "eating") and emotions (fearfulness), which occurred as a function of the quality of the relationship between the two animals. By contrast, the time the two dogs had spent together had no effect on the behaviours of surviving dog. Owner perceptions about their dog's reactions and emotions were not related to the memory or suffering of the event that tended to diminish over time. These findings indicate that a dog may show grief-related behavioural and emotional patterns when a close conspecific dies, with aspects of the latter possibly related to the owner's emotional status

    Reaction-Diffusion Processes from Equivalent Integrable Quantum Chains

    One-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems are mapped through a similarity transformation onto integrable (and a priori non-stochastic) quantum chains. Time-dependent properties of these chemical models can then be found exactly. The reaction-diffusion processes related to free fermion systems with site-independent interactions are classified. The time-dependence of the mean particle density is calculated. Furthermore new integrable stochastic processes related to the Heisenberg XXZ chain are identified and the relaxation times for the particle density and density correlation for these systems are found.Comment: 67 pages, Latex, 3 eps figures.     Splashing of Large Helium Nanodroplets Upon Surface Collisions

    In the present work we observe that helium nanodroplets colliding with surfaces can exhibit splashing in a way that is analogous to classical liquids. We use transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry to demonstrate that neutral and ionic dopants embedded in the droplets are efficiently backscattered in such events. High abundances of weakly bound He-tagged ions of both polarities indicate a gentle extraction mechanism of these ions from the droplets upon collision with a solid surface. This backscattering process is observed for dopant particles with masses up to 400 kilodaltons, indicating an unexpected mechanism that effectively lowers deposition rates of nanoparticles formed in helium droplets

    Electronic Transitions in Rb2+ Dimers Solvated in Helium

    We have measured depletion spectra of the heteronuclear (85Rb87Rb+) dimer cation complexed with up to 10 He atoms. Two absorption bands are observed between 920 and 250 nm. The transition into the repulsive 12Sigmau+ state of HeRb2+ gives rise to a broad feature at 790 nm (12650 cm–1); it exhibits a blueshift of 98 cm–1 per added He atom. The transition into the bound 1 2Piu state of HeRb2+ reveals vibrational structure with a band head at \u3c 15522 cm–1, a harmonic constant of 26 cm–1, and a spin-orbit splitting of \u3c 183 cm–1. The band experiences an average redshift of –38 cm–1 per added He atom. Ab initio calculations rationalize the shape of the spectra and spectral shifts with respect to the number of helium atoms attached. For a higher number of solvating helium atoms, symmetric solvation on both ends of the Rb2+ ion is predicted

    SF6+: Stabilizing Transient Ions in Helium Nanodroplets

    There are myriads of ions that are deemed too short-lived to be experimentally accessible. One of them is SF6+. It has never been observed, although not for lack of trying. We demonstrate that long-lived SF6+ can be formed by doping charged helium nanodroplets (HNDs) with sulfur hexafluoride; excess helium is then gently stripped from the doped HNDs by collisions with helium gas. The ion is identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (resolution m/Dm = 15000), the close agreement between the expected and observed yield of ions that contain minor sulfur isotopes, and collision-induced dissociation (CID) in which mass-selected HenSF6+ ions are collided with helium gas. Under optimized conditions, the yield of SF6+ exceeds that of SF5+. The procedure is versatile and suitable to stabilize many other transient molecular ions

    Morphological and Behavioral Changes in the Pathogenesis of a Novel Mouse Model of Communicating Hydrocephalus

    The Ro1 model of hydrocephalus represents an excellent model for studying the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus due to its complete penetrance and inducibility, enabling the investigation of the earliest cellular and histological changes in hydrocephalus prior to overt pathology. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy were used to characterize the histopathological events of hydrocephalus in this model. Additionally, a broad battery of behavioral tests was used to investigate behavioral changes in the Ro1 model of hydrocephalus. The earliest histological changes observed in this model were ventriculomegaly and disorganization of the ependymal lining of the aqueduct of Sylvius, which occurred concomitantly. Ventriculomegaly led to thinning of the ependyma, which was associated with periventricular edema and areas of the ventricular wall void of cilia and microvilli. Ependymal denudation was subsequent to severe ventriculomegaly, suggesting that it is an effect, rather than a cause, of hydrocephalus in the Ro1 model. Additionally, there was no closure of the aqueduct of Sylvius or any blockages within the ventricular system, even with severe ventriculomegaly, suggesting that the Ro1 model represents a model of communicating hydrocephalus. Interestingly, even with severe ventriculomegaly, there were no behavioral changes, suggesting that the brain is able to compensate for the structural changes that occur in the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus if the disorder progresses at a sufficiently slow rate

    This article reconsiders the possible statuary of the Pantheon in Rome, both in its original Augustan form and in its later phases. It argues that the so-called ‘Algiers Relief’ has wrongly been connected with the Temple of Mars Ultor and is in fact evidence of the association of the Divus Julius with Mars and Venus in the Pantheon of Agrippa, a juxtaposition which reflects the direction of Augustan ideology in the 20s b.c. and the building's celestial purpose. This triple statue group became the focus of the later Pantheon, and its importance is highlighted by the hierarchized system of architectural ornament of the present building

    Micromechanical Properties of Injection-Molded Starch–Wood Particle Composites

    The micromechanical properties of injection molded starch–wood particle composites were investigated as a function of particle content and humidity conditions. The composite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The microhardness of the composites was shown to increase notably with the concentration of the wood particles. In addition,creep behavior under the indenter and temperature dependence were evaluated in terms of the independent contribution of the starch matrix and the wood microparticles to the hardness value. The influence of drying time on the density and weight uptake of the injection-molded composites was highlighted. The results revealed the role of the mechanism of water evaporation, showing that the dependence of water uptake and temperature was greater for the starch–wood composites than for the pure starch sample. Experiments performed during the drying process at 70°C indicated that the wood in the starch composites did not prevent water loss from the samples.Peer reviewe
