Analysis of the use of Renewable Energies in Colombia and the Potential Application of Thermoelectric Devices for Energy Recovery

This study investigates the current situation of electricity generation from non-conventional renewable energy sources in Colombia (NCRES). In general, it was shown that Colombia has potential in renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biomass. However, barriers such as lack of human capital, policies focused on conventional technologies and high investment costs have impeded their growth. Although the development of these sources has been encouraged through Law 1715 of 2014, more policies and developments are needed to promote this type of NCRES. The use of thermoelectric devices (TED) can become a potential NCRES alternative, while the political and technological conditions improve in Colombia. Around the world, TEDs have allowed the recovery of waste heat in a variety of industrial applications and the automotive sector. They are allowing in the latter, not only the generation of electric power, but also the reduction in engine emissions. Besides, its characteristics have allowed it to be used for the generation of electric power, both in developed and developing countries. In this document, an example presentation is developed that demonstrates the applications of the TED in the cases above to demonstrate the potential that the TED can have in almost any place that has a heat source.

A seasonal diary of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic

In recent years new biological and physical controls have been suggested to drive phytoplankton bloom dynamics in the North Atlantic. A better understanding of the mechanisms driving primary production has potentially important implications for the understanding of the biological carbon pump, as it has for prediction of the system in climate change scenarios. However, the scientific discussion regarding this topic has generally failed to integrate the different drivers into a coherent picture, often rendering the proposed mechanisms exclusive to each other. We feel that the suggested mechanisms are not mutually exclusive, but rather complementary. Thus, moving beyond the “single mechanism” point of view, here we present an integrated conceptual model of the physical and biological controls on phytoplankton dynamics in the North Atlantic. Further we believe that the acclimation of physiological rates can play an important role in mediating phytoplankton dynamics. Thus, this view emphasizes the occurrence of multiple controls and relates their variations in impact to climate change

Model averaging, optimal inference, and habit formation

Postulating that the brain performs approximate Bayesian inference generates principled and empirically testable models of neuronal function-the subject of much current interest in neuroscience and related disciplines. Current formulations address inference and learning under some assumed and particular model. In reality, organisms are often faced with an additional challenge-that of determining which model or models of their environment are the best for guiding behavior. Bayesian model averaging-which says that an agent should weight the predictions of different models according to their evidence-provides a principled way to solve this problem. Importantly, because model evidence is determined by both the accuracy and complexity of the model, optimal inference requires that these be traded off against one another. This means an agent's behavior should show an equivalent balance. We hypothesize that Bayesian model averaging plays an important role in cognition, given that it is both optimal and realizable within a plausible neuronal architecture. We outline model averaging and how it might be implemented, and then explore a number of implications for brain and behavior. In particular, we propose that model averaging can explain a number of apparently suboptimal phenomena within the framework of approximate (bounded) Bayesian inference, focusing particularly upon the relationship between goal-directed and habitual behavior

Constraints, Resourcefulness, and Resilience in the Immigrant Latinx Community: Alternative Health Promoting Strategies for Diabetes Self-Management

    No full text
Despite major health reforms, American bureaucracy continues to deliberately exclude undocumented and recent immigrants from receiving coverage in the U.S healthcare system. Without accessible, affordable insurance, many Latinx immigrants with chronic illnesses, like diabetes, experience difficulties in securing adequate care to manage their condition. A great deal of health disparities research already highlights the disadvantages of this demographic’s struggle to consistently obtain the recommended Western biomedical treatments for diabetes management, considering bureaucratic and financial hurdles. However, not enough attention has been given to how this Latinx demographic circumvents health constraints, in absence of these resources. Largely lacking is a more accurate portrayal of their lived experiences, one that reflects not only their struggle, but their resilience as chronically ill individuals who experience several dimensions of social inequality. How do people who face so much resistance employ resourcefulness, creativity, and cultural practices to holistically best manage their chronic condition?Psychology, Department ofHonors Colleg

    No full text
| Many articles have been written about what digital resources represent âor could representâ for improving the performance of âmemory institutionsâ. But the majority of them refer to digital resources as things to be consumed and made available to users, but rarely as something to be produced and later made available to them. Starting with the functions of archives, the article proposes the creation of digital resources according to standards (metadata structures, OAIâPMH, semantic Web, etc.) in order to enhance resource discovery and information visibility, for specialists as well as for other types of users. Europe must give top priority to the development of new information retrieval systems and new products based on emerging standards and protocols in order for European countries to achieve a more competitive standing within the information society
