    Lean and green – a systematic review of the state of the art literature

    The move towards greener operations and products has forced companies to seek alternatives to balance efficiency gains and environmental friendliness in their operations and products. The exploration of the sequential or simultaneous deployment of lean and green initiatives is the results of this balancing action. However, the lean-green topic is relatively new, and it lacks of a clear and structured research definition. Thus, this paper’s main contribution is the offering of a systematic review of the existing literature on lean and green, aimed at providing guidance on the topic, uncovering gaps and inconsistencies in the literature, and finding new paths for research. The paper identifies and structures, through a concept map, six main research streams that comprise both conceptual and empirical research conducted within the context of various organisational functions and industrial sectors. Important issues for future research are then suggested in the form of research questions. The paper’s aim is to also contribute by stimulating scholars to further study this area in depth, which will lead to a better understanding of the compatibility and impact on organisational performance of lean and green initiatives. It also holds important implications for industrialists, who can develop a deeper and richer knowledge on lean and green to help them formulate more effective strategies for their deployment

    End-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling management: improving performance using an ISM approach

    With booming of the automobile industry, China has become the country with increasing car ownership all over the world. However, the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling industry is at infancy, and there is little systematic review on ELV recycling management, as well as low adoption amongst domestic automobile industry. This study presents a literature review and an interpretive structural modeling (ISM) approach is employed to identify the drivers towards Chinese ELV recycling business from government, recycling organizations and consumer’s perspectives, so as to improve the sustainability of automobile supply chain by providing some strategic insights. The results derived from the ISM analysis manifest that regulations on auto-factory, disassembly technique, and value mining of recycling business are the essential ingredients. It is most effective and efficient to promote ELV recycling business by improving these attributes, also the driving and dependence power analysis are deemed to provide guidance on performance improvement of ELV recycling in the Chinese market

Food SCNs have to become robust, i.e. they should be able to continue to function in the event of disruption as well as in normal business environment.     A Content Analysis of Current Issues in Supply Chain Management

    This paper presents a content analysis to review and offer the latest study of literature in supply chain management (SCM). The SCM literature seems to require a review study on a regular basis to keep updated on the changes of its dynamic and complex characteristics. Drawing from the 58 articles from Emerald Insight and Science Direct databases, this study provides an appropriate analysis from the four pre-identified keywords to explore the recent articles published in the years 2016 and 2017, as well as the issues that have been revisited for further analysis. The results revealed five prime issues and four major scopes that have become the focus of the recent study, which suggests the future research propositions in SCM

    Programmable Process Structure Based Analysis of Hydrogen Supply Chains

    The planning and operation of Hydrogen Supply Chains (HSC) often require easily extensible, generic dynamic simulation tools. In this paper, the non-conventional modeling and simulation methodology of Programmable Process Structures is applied for the description of these process systems. Programmable Process Structures of HSC models are generated from the two general functional meta-prototypes of the method and from the description of the studied HSC network. The actual program prototypes of production, transformation, transportation, utilization and intermediate storage are copied from the meta-prototypes and filled with the locally executable declarative program code for the various classes of elements. The actual state and transition elements are parameterized and initialized according to their case-specific prototypes. The execution of the programmed HSC structures is solved by the general purpose kernel program. The application of methodology, developed in other fields, is illustrated by a fictitious, simplified HSC example. Analysis of this example model illustrates that the coordination of the hectically changing energy production of renewable resources with its seasonally and tendentiously changing demands is in need of dynamic simulation-based planning

    A framework for smart production-logistics systems based on CPS and industrial IoT

    Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has received increasing attention from both academia and industry. However, several challenges including excessively long waiting time and a serious waste of energy still exist in the IIoT-based integration between production and logistics in job shops. To address these challenges, a framework depicting the mechanism and methodology of smart production-logistics systems is proposed to implement intelligent modeling of key manufacturing resources and investigate self-organizing configuration mechanisms. A data-driven model based on analytical target cascading is developed to implement the self-organizing configuration. A case study based on a Chinese engine manufacturer is presented to validate the feasibility and evaluate the performance of the proposed framework and the developed method. The results show that the manufacturing time and the energy consumption are reduced and the computing time is reasonable. This paper potentially enables manufacturers to deploy IIoT-based applications and improve the efficiency of production-logistics systems

    A review of data visualization: opportunities in manufacturing sequence management.

    Data visualization now benefits from developments in technologies that offer innovative ways of presenting complex data. Potentially these have widespread application in communicating the complex information domains typical of manufacturing sequence management environments for global enterprises. In this paper the authors review the visualization functionalities, techniques and applications reported in literature, map these to manufacturing sequence information presentation requirements and identify the opportunities available and likely development paths. Current leading-edge practice in dynamic updating and communication with suppliers is not being exploited in manufacturing sequence management; it could provide significant benefits to manufacturing business. In the context of global manufacturing operations and broad-based user communities with differing needs served by common data sets, tool functionality is generally ahead of user application
