    Search with evolutionary ruin and stochastic rebuild: a theoretic framework and a case study on exam timetabling

    This paper presents a state transition based formal framework for a new search method, called Evolutionary Ruin and Stochastic Recreate, which tries to learn and adapt to the changing environments during the search process. It improves the performance of the original Ruin and Recreate principle by embedding an additional phase of Evolutionary Ruin to mimic the survival-of-the-fittest mechanism within single solutions. This method executes a cycle of Solution Decomposition, Evolutionary Ruin, Stochastic Recreate and Solution Acceptance until a certain stopping condition is met. The Solution Decomposition phase first uses some problem-specific knowledge to decompose a complete solution into its components and assigns a score to each component. The Evolutionary Ruin phase then employs two evolutionary operators (namely Selection and Mutation) to destroy a certain fraction of the solution, and the next Stochastic Recreate phase repairs the “broken” solution. Last, the Solution Acceptance phase selects a specific strategy to determine the probability of accepting the newly generated solution. Hence, optimisation is achieved by an iterative process of component evaluation, solution disruption and stochastic constructive repair. From the state transitions point of view, this paper presents a probabilistic model and implements a Markov chain analysis on some theoretical properties of the approach. Unlike the theoretical work on genetic algorithm and simulated annealing which are based on state transitions within the space of complete assignments, our model is based on state transitions within the space of partial assignments. The exam timetabling problems are used to test the performance in solving real-world hard problems

    Iterated local search using an add and delete hyper- heuristic for university course timetabling

    Hyper-heuristics are (meta-)heuristics that operate at a higher level to choose or generate a set of low-level (meta-)heuristics in an attempt of solve difficult optimization problems. Iterated local search (ILS) is a well-known approach for discrete optimization, combining perturbation and hill-climbing within an iterative framework. In this study, we introduce an ILS approach, strengthened by a hyper-heuristic which generates heuristics based on a fixed number of add and delete operations. The performance of the proposed hyper-heuristic is tested across two different problem domains using real world benchmark of course timetabling instances from the second International Timetabling Competition Tracks 2 and 3. The results show that mixing add and delete operations within an ILS framework yields an effective hyper-heuristic approach

    BIN-CT: Urban Waste Collection based in Predicting the Container Fill Level

    The fast demographic growth, together with the concentration of the population in cities and the increasing amount of daily waste, are factors that push to the limit the ability of waste assimilation by Nature. Therefore, we need technological means to make an optimal management of the waste collection process, which represents 70% of the operational cost in waste treatment. In this article, we present a free intelligent software system, based on computational learning algorithms, which plans the best routes for waste collection supported by past (historical) and future (predictions) data. The objective of the system is the cost reduction of the waste collection service by means of the minimization in distance traveled by any truck to collect a container, hence the fuel consumption. At the same time the quality of service to the citizen is increased avoiding the annoying overflows of containers thanks to the accurate fill level predictions performed by BIN-CT. In this article we show the features of our software system, illustrating it operation with a real case study of a Spanish city. We conclude that the use of BIN-CT avoids unnecessary visits to containers, reduces the distance traveled to collect a container and therefore we obtain a reduction of total costs and harmful emissions thrown to the atmosphere.Comment: 11 pages, double column, 4 figures, 3 table

    Stochastic local search: a state-of-the-art review

    The main objective of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art review, analyze and discuss stochastic local search techniques used for solving hard combinatorial problems. It begins with a short introduction, motivation and some basic notation on combinatorial problems, search paradigms and other relevant features of searching techniques as needed for background. In the following a brief overview of the stochastic local search methods along with an analysis of the state-of-the-art stochastic local search algorithms is given. Finally, the last part of the paper present and discuss some of the most latest trends in application of stochastic local search algorithms in machine learning, data mining and some other areas of science and engineering. We conclude with a discussion on capabilities and limitations of stochastic local search algorithms

    Multi-objective sequence dependent setup times permutation flowshop: A new algorithm and a comprehensive study

    The permutation flowshop scheduling problem has been thoroughly studied in recent decades, both from single objective as well as from multi-objective perspectives. To the best of our knowledge, little has been done regarding the multi-objective flowshop with Pareto approach when sequence dependent setup times are considered. As setup times and multi-criteria problems are important in industry, we must focus on this area. We propose a simple, yet powerful algorithm for the sequence dependent setup times flowshop problem with several criteria. The presented method is referred to as Restarted Iterated Pareto Greedy or RIPG and is compared against the best performing approaches from the relevant literature. Comprehensive computational and statistical analyses are carried out in order to demonstrate that the proposed RIPG method clearly outperforms all other algorithms and, as a consequence, it is a state-of- art method for this important and practical scheduling problemThe authors thank the anonymous referees for their careful and detailed comments which have helped improve this manuscript considerably.     Innovative Hybrid Approaches for Vehicle Routing Problems

    This thesis deals with the efficient resolution of Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs). The first chapter faces the archetype of all VRPs: the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). Despite having being introduced more than 60 years ago, it still remains an extremely challenging problem. In this chapter I design a Fast Iterated-Local-Search Localized Optimization algorithm for the CVRP, shortened to FILO. The simplicity of the CVRP definition allowed me to experiment with advanced local search acceleration and pruning techniques that have eventually became the core optimization engine of FILO. FILO experimentally shown to be extremely scalable and able to solve very large scale instances of the CVRP in a fraction of the computing time compared to existing state-of-the-art methods, still obtaining competitive solutions in terms of their quality. The second chapter deals with an extension of the CVRP called the Extended Single Truck and Trailer Vehicle Routing Problem, or simply XSTTRP. The XSTTRP models a broad class of VRPs in which a single vehicle, composed of a truck and a detachable trailer, has to serve a set of customers with accessibility constraints making some of them not reachable by using the entire vehicle. This problem moves towards VRPs including more realistic constraints and it models scenarios such as parcel deliveries in crowded city centers or rural areas, where maneuvering a large vehicle is forbidden or dangerous. The XSTTRP generalizes several well known VRPs such as the Multiple Depot VRP and the Location Routing Problem. For its solution I developed an hybrid metaheuristic which combines a fast heuristic optimization with a polishing phase based on the resolution of a limited set partitioning problem. Finally, the thesis includes a final chapter aimed at guiding the computational evaluation of new approaches to VRPs proposed by the machine learning community

    A unified matheuristic for solving multi-constrained traveling salesman problems with profits

    International audienceIn this paper, we address a rich Traveling Salesman Problem with Profits encountered in several real-life cases. We propose a unified solution approach based on variable neighborhood search. Our approach combines several removal and insertion routing neighborhoods and efficient constraint checking procedures. The loading problem related to the use of a multi-compartment vehicle is addressed carefully. Two loading neighborhoods based on the solution of mathematical programs are proposed to intensify the search. They interact with the routing neighborhoods as it is commonly done in matheuristics. The performance of the proposed matheuristic is assessed on various instances proposed for the Orienteer-ing Problem and the Orienteering Problem with Time Window including up to 288 customers. The computational results show that the proposed matheuristic is very competitive compared with the state-of-the-art methods. To better evaluate its performance, we generate a new testbed including instances with various attributes. Extensive computational experiments on the new testbed confirm the efficiency of the matheuristic. A sensitivity analysis highlights which components of the matheuristic contribute most to the solution quality
