A knowledge-based approach towards human activity recognition in smart environments
For many years it is known that the population of older persons is on the rise. A recent report estimates that globally, the share of the population aged 65 years or over is expected to increase from 9.3 percent in 2020 to around 16.0 percent in 2050 [1]. This point has been one of the main sources of motivation for active research in the domain of human
activity recognition in smart-homes. The ability to perform ADL without assistance from
other people can be considered as a reference for the estimation of the independent living
level of the older person. Conventionally, this has been assessed by health-care domain
experts via a qualitative evaluation of the ADL. Since this evaluation is qualitative, it can
vary based on the person being monitored and the caregiver\u2019s experience. A significant
amount of research work is implicitly or explicitly aimed at augmenting the health-care
domain expert\u2019s qualitative evaluation with quantitative data or knowledge obtained from
HAR. From a medical perspective, there is a lack of evidence about the technology readiness
level of smart home architectures supporting older persons by recognizing ADL [2]. We
hypothesize that this may be due to a lack of effective collaboration between smart-home
researchers/developers and health-care domain experts, especially when considering HAR.
We foresee an increase in HAR systems being developed in close collaboration with caregivers
and geriatricians to support their qualitative evaluation of ADL with explainable quantitative
outcomes of the HAR systems. This has been a motivation for the work in this thesis. The
recognition of human activities \u2013 in particular ADL \u2013 may not only be limited to support
the health and well-being of older people. It can be relevant to home users in general. For
instance, HAR could support digital assistants or companion robots to provide contextually
relevant and proactive support to the home users, whether young adults or old. This has also
been a motivation for the work in this thesis.
Given our motivations, namely, (i) facilitation of iterative development and ease in collaboration between HAR system researchers/developers and health-care domain experts in ADL,
and (ii) robust HAR that can support digital assistants or companion robots. There is a need
for the development of a HAR framework that at its core is modular and flexible to facilitate
an iterative development process [3], which is an integral part of collaborative work that involves develop-test-improve phases. At the same time, the framework should be intelligible
for the sake of enriched collaboration with health-care domain experts. Furthermore, it
should be scalable, online, and accurate for having robust HAR, which can enable many
smart-home applications. The goal of this thesis is to design and evaluate such a framework.
This thesis contributes to the domain of HAR in smart-homes. Particularly the contribution can be divided into three parts. The first contribution is Arianna+, a framework to develop
networks of ontologies - for knowledge representation and reasoning - that enables smart
homes to perform human activity recognition online. The second contribution is OWLOOP,
an API that supports the development of HAR system architectures based on Arianna+. It
enables the usage of Ontology Web Language (OWL) by the means of Object-Oriented
Programming (OOP). The third contribution is the evaluation and exploitation of Arianna+
using OWLOOP API. The exploitation of Arianna+ using OWLOOP API has resulted in four
HAR system implementations. The evaluations and results of these HAR systems emphasize
the novelty of Arianna+
Eco‐Holonic 4.0 Circular Business Model to Conceptualize Sustainable Value Chain Towards Digital Transition
The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a circular business model based on an Eco-Holonic Architecture, through the integration of circular economy and holonic principles. A conceptual model is developed to manage the complexity of integrating circular economy principles, digital transformation, and tools and frameworks for sustainability into business models. The proposed architecture is multilevel and multiscale in order to achieve the instantiation of the sustainable value chain in any territory. The architecture promotes the incorporation of circular economy and holonic principles into new circular business models. This integrated perspective of business model can support the design and upgrade of the manufacturing companies in their respective industrial sectors. The conceptual model proposed is based on activity theory that considers the interactions between technical and social systems and allows the mitigation of the metabolic rift that exists between natural and social metabolism. This study contributes to the existing literature on circular economy, circular business models and activity theory by considering holonic paradigm concerns, which have not been explored yet. This research also offers a unique holonic architecture of circular business model by considering different levels, relationships, dynamism and contextualization (territory) aspects
Understanding Topic Models in Context: A Mixed-Methods Approach to the Meaningful Analysis of Large Document Collections
In recent years, we have witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of large document collections. This development has spawned the need for appropriate analytical means. In particular, to seize the thematic composition of large document collections, researchers increasingly draw on quantitative topic models. Among their most prominent representatives is the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Yet, these models have significant drawbacks, e.g. the generated topics lack context and thus meaningfulness. Prior research has rarely addressed this limitation through the lens of mixed-methods research. We position our paper towards this gap by proposing a structured mixed-methods approach to the meaningful analysis of large document collections. Particularly, we draw on qualitative coding and quantitative hierarchical clustering to validate and enhance topic models through re-contextualization. To illustrate the proposed approach, we conduct a case study of the thematic composition of the AIS Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals

Ontology based contextualization and context constraints management in web service processes
The flexibility and dynamism of service-based applications impose shifting the validation process to runtime; therefore, runtime monitoring of dynamic features attached to service-based systems is becoming an important direction
of research that motivated the definition of our work. We propose an ontology based contextualization and a framework and techniques for managing context constraints in a Web service process for dynamic requirements validation
monitoring at process runtime. Firstly, we propose an approach to define and model dynamic service context attached to composition and execution of services
in a service process at run-time. Secondly, managing context constraints are defined in a framework, which has three main processes for context manipulation and reasoning, context constraints generation, and dynamic instrumentation and validation monitoring of context constraints. The dynamic requirements attached to service composition and execution are generated as context constraints.
The dynamic service context modeling is investigated based on empirical analysis of application scenarios in the classical business domain and analysing previous
models in the literature. The orientation of context aspects in a general context taxonomy is considered important. The Ontology Web Language (OWL) has many
merits on formalising dynamic service context such as shared conceptualization, logical language support for composition and reasoning, XML based interoperability,
etc. XML-based constraint representation is compatible with Web service technologies. The analysis of complementary case study scenarios and expert opinions through a survey illustrate the validity and completeness of our context
model. The proposed techniques for context manipulation, context constraints generation, instrumentation and validation monitoring are investigated through a set of experiments from an empirical evaluation. The analytical evaluation is also used to evaluate algorithms. Our contributions and evaluation results provide a further step towards developing a highly automated dynamic requirements
management system for service processes at process run-time
A 'likely benefit' from aligning Web 2.0 technologies with an institutions learning and teaching agenda
This paper demonstrates a ‘likely benefit’, and a practical view of expected challenges, when incorporating Web 2.0 technologies in a contemporary higher education context. After first exploring which factors potentially influence a shift in thinking about learning and teaching in a Web 2.0 context this paper then addresses the important role, or the affordance, of an integrated Learning Management System (LMS) and the pedagogical applications of Web 2.0 technologies. It then uses a series of case study from the University of Southern Queensland, a large distance
education provider in Australia, to support these propositions. Overall, this paper suggests that the goals and ideals of Web 2.0/ Pedagogy 2.0 can be achieved, or at least stimulated, within an institutional LMS environment, as long as the LMS environment is aligned with these ideals
