    Characterizing the Noise Associated with Sensor Placement and Motion Artifacts and Overcoming its Effects for Body-worn Physiological Sensors

    Wearable sensors for continuous physiological monitoring have the potential to change the paradigm for healthcare by providing information in scenarios not covered by the existing clinical model. One key challenge for wearable physiological sensors is that their signal-to-noise ratios are low compared to those of their medical grade counterparts in hospitals. Two primary sources of noise are the sensor-skin contact interface and motion artifacts due to the user’s daily activities. These are challenging problems because the initial sensor placement by the user may not be ideal, the skin conditions can change over time, and the nature of motion artifacts is not predictable. The objective of this research is twofold. The first is to design sensors with reconfigurable contact to mitigate the effects of misplaced sensors or changing skin conditions. The second is to leverage signal processing techniques for accurate physiological parameter estimation despite the presence of motion artifacts. In this research, the sensor contact problem was specifically addressed for dry-contact electroencephalography (EEG). The proposed novel extension to a popular existing EEG electrode design enabled reconfigurable contact to adjust to variations in sensor placement and skin conditions over time. Experimental results on human subjects showed that reconfiguration of contact can reduce the noise in collected EEG signals without the need for manual intervention. To address the motion artifact problem, a particle filter based approach was employed to track the heart rate in cardiac signals affected by the movements of the user. The algorithm was tested on cardiac signals from human subjects running on a treadmill and showed good performance in accurately tracking heart rate. Moreover, the proposed algorithm enables fusion of multiple modalities and is also computationally more efficient compared to other contemporary approaches

    Heart Rate Estimation During Physical Exercise Using Wrist-Type Ppg Sensors

    Accurate heart rate monitoring during intense physical exercise is a challenging problem due to the high levels of motion artifacts (MA) in photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors. PPG is a non-invasive optical sensor that is being used in wearable devices to measure blood flow changes using the property of light reflection and absorption, allowing the extraction of vital signals such as the heart rate (HR). However, the sensor is susceptible to MA which increases during physical activity. This occurs since the frequency range of movement and HR overlaps, difficulting correct HR estimation. For this reason, MA removal has remained an active topic under research. Several approaches have been developed in the recent past and among these, a Kalman filter (KF) based approach showed promising results for an accurate estimation and tracking using PPG sensors. However, this previous tracker was demonstrated for a particular dataset, with manually tuned parameters. Moreover, such trackers do not account for the correct method for fusing data. Such a custom approach might not perform accurately in practical scenarios, where the amount of MA and the heart rate variability (HRV) depend on numerous, unpredictable factors. Thus, an approach to automatically tune the KF based on the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm, with a measurement fusion approach is developed. The applicability of such a method is demonstrated using an open-source PPG database, as well as a developed synthetic generation tool that models PPG and accelerometer (ACC) signals during predetermined physical activities

    Breathing Rate Estimation From the Electrocardiogram and Photoplethysmogram: A Review.

    Breathing rate (BR) is a key physiological parameter used in a range of clinical settings. Despite its diagnostic and prognostic value, it is still widely measured by counting breaths manually. A plethora of algorithms have been proposed to estimate BR from the electrocardiogram (ECG) and pulse oximetry (photoplethysmogram, PPG) signals. These BR algorithms provide opportunity for automated, electronic, and unobtrusive measurement of BR in both healthcare and fitness monitoring. This paper presents a review of the literature on BR estimation from the ECG and PPG. First, the structure of BR algorithms and the mathematical techniques used at each stage are described. Second, the experimental methodologies that have been used to assess the performance of BR algorithms are reviewed, and a methodological framework for the assessment of BR algorithms is presented. Third, we outline the most pressing directions for future research, including the steps required to use BR algorithms in wearable sensors, remote video monitoring, and clinical practice

    Automated methods of real-time, unobtrusive, human ambulation, activity, and wellness monitoring and data analysis using various algorithmic techniques have been subjects of intense research. The general aim is to devise effective means of addressing the demands of assisted living, rehabilitation, and clinical observation and assessment through sensor-based monitoring. The research studies have resulted in a large amount of literature. This paper presents a holistic articulation of the research studies and offers comprehensive insights along four main axes: distribution of existing studies; monitoring device framework and sensor types; data collection, processing and analysis; and applications, limitations and challenges. The aim is to present a systematic and most complete study of literature in the area in order to identify research gaps and prioritize future research directions

    Multi-sensor fusion based on multiple classifier systems for human activity identification

    Multimodal sensors in healthcare applications have been increasingly researched because it facilitates automatic and comprehensive monitoring of human behaviors, high-intensity sports management, energy expenditure estimation, and postural detection. Recent studies have shown the importance of multi-sensor fusion to achieve robustness, high-performance generalization, provide diversity and tackle challenging issue that maybe difficult with single sensor values. The aim of this study is to propose an innovative multi-sensor fusion framework to improve human activity detection performances and reduce misrecognition rate. The study proposes a multi-view ensemble algorithm to integrate predicted values of different motion sensors. To this end, computationally efficient classification algorithms such as decision tree, logistic regression and k-Nearest Neighbors were used to implement diverse, flexible and dynamic human activity detection systems. To provide compact feature vector representation, we studied hybrid bio-inspired evolutionary search algorithm and correlation-based feature selection method and evaluate their impact on extracted feature vectors from individual sensor modality. Furthermore, we utilized Synthetic Over-sampling minority Techniques (SMOTE) algorithm to reduce the impact of class imbalance and improve performance results. With the above methods, this paper provides unified framework to resolve major challenges in human activity identification. The performance results obtained using two publicly available datasets showed significant improvement over baseline methods in the detection of specific activity details and reduced error rate. The performance results of our evaluation showed 3% to 24% improvement in accuracy, recall, precision, F-measure and detection ability (AUC) compared to single sensors and feature-level fusion. The benefit of the proposed multi-sensor fusion is the ability to utilize distinct feature characteristics of individual sensor and multiple classifier systems to improve recognition accuracy.     Elderly Fall Detection Systems: A Literature Survey

    Falling is among the most damaging event elderly people may experience. With the ever-growing aging population, there is an urgent need for the development of fall detection systems. Thanks to the rapid development of sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT), human-computer interaction using sensor fusion has been regarded as an effective method to address the problem of fall detection. In this paper, we provide a literature survey of work conducted on elderly fall detection using sensor networks and IoT. Although there are various existing studies which focus on the fall detection with individual sensors, such as wearable ones and depth cameras, the performance of these systems are still not satisfying as they suffer mostly from high false alarms. Literature shows that fusing the signals of different sensors could result in higher accuracy and lower false alarms, while improving the robustness of such systems. We approach this survey from different perspectives, including data collection, data transmission, sensor fusion, data analysis, security, and privacy. We also review the benchmark data sets available that have been used to quantify the performance of the proposed methods. The survey is meant to provide researchers in the field of elderly fall detection using sensor networks with a summary of progress achieved up to date and to identify areas where further effort would be beneficial

    A Review on the Role of Nano-Communication in Future Healthcare Systems: A Big Data Analytics Perspective

    This paper presents a first-time review of the open literature focused on the significance of big data generated within nano-sensors and nano-communication networks intended for future healthcare and biomedical applications. It is aimed towards the development of modern smart healthcare systems enabled with P4, i.e. predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory capabilities to perform diagnostics, monitoring, and treatment. The analytical capabilities that can be produced from the substantial amount of data gathered in such networks will aid in exploiting the practical intelligence and learning capabilities that could be further integrated with conventional medical and health data leading to more efficient decision making. We have also proposed a big data analytics framework for gathering intelligence, form the healthcare big data, required by futuristic smart healthcare to address relevant problems and exploit possible opportunities in future applications.     Robust localization with wearable sensors

    Measuring physical movements of humans and understanding human behaviour is useful in a variety of areas and disciplines. Human inertial tracking is a method that can be leveraged for monitoring complex actions that emerge from interactions between human actors and their environment. An accurate estimation of motion trajectories can support new approaches to pedestrian navigation, emergency rescue, athlete management, and medicine. However, tracking with wearable inertial sensors has several problems that need to be overcome, such as the low accuracy of consumer-grade inertial measurement units (IMUs), the error accumulation problem in long-term tracking, and the artefacts generated by movements that are less common. This thesis focusses on measuring human movements with wearable head-mounted sensors to accurately estimate the physical location of a person over time. The research consisted of (i) providing an overview of the current state of research for inertial tracking with wearable sensors, (ii) investigating the performance of new tracking algorithms that combine sensor fusion and data-driven machine learning, (iii) eliminating the effect of random head motion during tracking, (iv) creating robust long-term tracking systems with a Bayesian neural network and sequential Monte Carlo method, and (v) verifying that the system can be applied with changing modes of behaviour, defined as natural transitions from walking to running and vice versa. This research introduces a new system for inertial tracking with head-mounted sensors (which can be placed in, e.g. helmets, caps, or glasses). This technology can be used for long-term positional tracking to explore complex behaviours
