The paper analyses the reception of Friedrich Schleiermacher's main concepts influenced by Lawrence Venuti. COMUNICAÇÃO NA ALDEIA GLOBAL:: SOBRE LINGUAGEM, TRADUÇÃO E IDENTIDADE CULTURAL

Este trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar o efeito dos desenvolvimentos recentes (em particular a globalização e os avanços tecnológicos) em nossa produção e percepção de língua, e na tradução e no perfil de trabalho do tradutor. As duas forças opostas do globalismo e tribalismo são apresentadas e contrapostas ao conceito sociológico de identidade cultural. A posição do inglês como língua franca mundial (e em estudos pós-coloniais) será discutida junto com a atual constelação de línguas na Europa atualmente e o fenômeno de hibridismo resultante. Deve-se chegar a conclusões com relação às atividades variadas de tradução na atualidade e sobre o perfil de trabalho do tradutor em constante mudança, o que será feito a partir da comparação entre quatro trabalhos autênticos de tradução: de uma organização internacional, de uma firma de eletrodomésticos com filiais por toda a Europa, de um panfleto publicitário de uma linha aérea e de um romance best-seller recente. Tendo como base o que foi dito acima, o perfil de trabalho do tradutor moderno é esboçado, mostrando ele ou ela como um perito em cultura internacional em um mundo internacionalizado que é ao mesmo tempo caracterizado por uma abundância de comunidades de culturas individuais

[full article, abstract in English; abstract in Lithuanian] The aim of this article is to observe how semantic peculiarities travel across languages and cultures. The original book, The Big Fat Giant, by Roald Dahl lends itself perfectly to such a comparative study due to its linguistic and semantic features that need to be explored in order to understand how they were brought to the Albanian language and culture. Classifications of several levels at which mismatches occur are mentioned, such as mismatches at the level of syntax, semantics and phonetics. Examples are given to illustrate each level. The discussion is enriched with observations and examples from the intertextual level. The paper concludes with findings which refer to this tale in particular and recommendations for further research.[straipsnis ir santrauka anglų kalba, santrauka lietuvių kalba] Vertimo procese kalbų ir kultūrų skirtumai išryškėja įvairiuose lygmenyse: sintaksės, semantikos, fonetikos ir pan. Šiame straipsnyje siekiama palyginti garsaus anglų rašytojo Roaldo Dahlio knygos The BFG (liet. DGM – vertė D. Žalytė) originalo tekstą su jo vertimu į albanų kalbą. Šis palyginimas atskleidė gana daug įvairių neatitikimų visuose kalbos lygmenyse, ypač verti dėmesio semantikos pokyčiai vertime. Pateikti pavyzdžiai skirti ne tik parodyti faktiškai užfiksuotus skirtumus, vertėjui kėlusius daugiausia problemų, bet ir atkreipti dėmesį į veiksnius, kurie daro poveikį pačiam vertimo procesui

Working with Language: A Refocused Research Agenda for Cultural Leadership Studies

© 2016 British Academy of Management and John Wiley & Sons Ltd This paper critically reviews existing contributions from the field of cultural leadership studies with a view to highlighting the conceptual and methodological limitations of the dominant etic, cross-cultural approach in leadership studies and illuminating implications of the relative dominance and unreflective use of the English language as the academic and business lingua franca within this field. It subsequently outlines the negative implications of overlooking cultural and linguistic multiplicity for an understanding of culturally sensitive leadership practices. In drawing on lessons from this critical review and the emergent fields of emic, non-positivist cultural leadership studies, this analysis argues that the field of cultural leadership studies requires an alternative research agenda focused on language multiplicity, which enables the field to move towards emic, qualitative research that helps to empower individual cultural voices and explore cultural intra- and interrelationships, tensions and paradoxes embedded in leadership processes. The paper concludes by offering suggestions on methodological approaches for emic cultural leadership studies that are centred on the exploration of language as a cultural voice

Translating lexical legal terms between English and Arabic

Legal translation between English and Arabic is under researched. However, the growing need for it, due to immigration and asylum seeking, among other reasons, necessitates the importance of more research. The asymmetry between English and Arabic poses many difficulties for legal translators, be they linguistic-based, culture-specific or system-based. The aim of this research is to discuss ways of translating lexical items between English and Arabic. In this current discussion I will present, exemplify and analyse the common difficult areas of translating English/Arabic legal texts and suggest ways of dealing with them. These areas involve culture-specific and system-based terms, archaic terms, specialised terms and doublets and triplets. With this aim in mind, the paper answers the following research questions: (1) What are the common difficulties of translating legal texts between English and Arabic? (2) What are the common lexical difficulties between English and Arabic legal texts? (3) What are the procedures of translating lexical legal terms between English and Arabic? The paper concludes that translating the above-mentioned lexical terms requires expertise, professional training, robust knowledge of the linguistic and legal systems of languages, as well as up-to-date electronic dictionaries and well-defined parallel corpora

Patient or Vehicle? Semantic roles in German and English descriptive verbs (revisited)

The paper investigates the problem of semantic roles within the concept of verb-descriptivity (Snell-Hornby 1983). Descriptive verbs are semantically complex lexical items, where the modifying components are more focal than the verbal action itself (as in bustle or strut), and where the participants, the background situation and the attitude of the speaker emerge as distinctive elements (as in grovel and waft). As against orthodox views in early case grammar, a distinction is made here between the Patient as “sufferer” of the verbal action and the Vehicle as its “conveyer”. It is argued that this differentiation is essential for the understanding, the analysis and the translation of descriptive verbs, as the semantic roles are by no means identical when compared in various languages (here English and German). This is illustrated by the comparison of lexemes in the semantic field of verbs expressing anger. The aim of the paper is to sharpen awareness of such fine distinctions, particularly in their relevance for translation
