    Laser calibration system for the CERES Time Projection Chamber

    A Nd:YAG laser was used to simulate charged particle tracks at known positions in the CERES Time Projection Chamber at the CERN SPS. The system was primarily developed to study the response of the readout electronics and to calibrate the electron drift velocity. Further applications were the determination of the gating grid transparency, the chamber position calibration, and long-term monitoring of drift properties of the gas in the detector.Comment: 28 pages, 26 figures; reference to the TPC preprint update

We emphasize the role interferometry plays in addressing fundamental questions about the state of matter created in such collisions, and present an enumerated list of measurements, analyses and calculations that are needed to advance the field in the coming years

    Observation of enhanced subthreshold K+ production in central collisions between heavy nuclei

    In the very heavy collision system 197Au+197Au the K+ production process was studied as a function of impact parameter at 1 GeV/nucleon, a beam energy well below the free N-N threshold. The K+ multiplicity increases more than linearly with the number of participant nucleons and the K+/ pi + ratio rises significantly when going from peripheral to central collisions. The measured K+ double differential cross section is enhanced by a factor of 6 compared to microscopic transport calculations if secondary processes (Delta N-->K Lambda N and Delta Delta -->K Lambda N) are ignored

    Azimuthally anisotropic emission of pions in symmetric heavy-ion collisions

    Triple differential cross sections d3 sigma /dp3 for charged pions produced in symmetric heavy-ion collisions were measured with the KaoS magnetic spectrometer at the heavy-ion synchrotron facility SIS at GSI. The correlations between the momentum vectors of charged pions and the reaction plane in 197Au+197Au collisions at an incident energy of 1 GeV/nucleon were determined. We observe, for the first time, an azimuthally anisotropic distribution of pions, with enhanced emission perpendicular to the reaction plane. The anisotropy is most pronounced for pions of high transverse momentum in semicentral collisions

    Space for dialogue : practical handbook about how to lead public participation in spatial planning

    Public participation means involvement of individuals, groups and local communities in public decision making. In the last few years an evolution of understanding the public participation in city management can be noticeable in Polish cities. The handbook tries to answer the question of how to lead public participation in spatial planning, with the focus on the contribution that citizens bring to the process. The aim is to provide practical knowledge about public participation in spatial planning (at the local government level), including good practices in this eld. The handbook consists of ten chapters. The rst three chapters gives an introduction to the theory of public participation in spatial planning. Fourth of them describes the de nition of public participation in spatial planning. The fth chapter shows forms of participation in current law conditions of Polish spatial-planning system. Sixth chapter deals with all the questions and doubts about process of public participation in spatial planning: its actors, advantages, limitations and problems. As a consequence, chapter sixth shows the principles and practical hints on social consultations organization. Next chapter describes the new forms of methods and tools of participation. Eighth chapter refers to main principles and examples of good practices in new participatory approach in Poland. Ninth chapter traces the results and evaluation of three processes of spatial planning regarding public participation (examples from Gorzów Wielkopolski, Trzebinia and PoznaƄ) with a focus on SWOT analysis. The last chapter deals with a number of recommendations on how to strengthen the existing framework of local authorities cooperation in the eld of public participation in spatial planning

    Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in proton–proton collisions at √s=900 GeV with ALICE at the LHC

    The inclusive charged particle transverse momentum distribution is measured in proton–proton collisions at s=900 GeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (|η|<0.8) over the transverse momentum range 0.15<pT<10 GeV/c. The correlation between transverse momentum and particle multiplicity is also studied. Results are presented for inelastic (INEL) and non-single-diffractive (NSD) events. The average transverse momentum for |η|<0.8 is 〈pT〉INEL=0.483±0.001 (stat.)±0.007 (syst.) GeV/c and 〈pT〉NSD=0.489±0.001 (stat.)±0.007 (syst.) GeV/c, respectively. The data exhibit a slightly larger 〈pT〉 than measurements in wider pseudorapidity intervals. The results are compared to simulations with the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA and PHOJET

    Production of inclusive ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

    We report on the production of inclusive ΄(1S) and ΄(2S) in p-Pb collisions at sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector at backward (−4.46<ycms<−2.96) and forward (2.03<ycms<3.53) rapidity down to zero transverse momentum. The production cross sections of the ΄(1S) and ΄(2S) are presented, as well as the nuclear modification factor and the ratio of the forward to backward yields of ΄(1S). A suppression of the inclusive ΄(1S) yield in p-Pb collisions with respect to the yield from pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions is observed at forward rapidity but not at backward rapidity. The results are compared to theoretical model calculations including nuclear shadowing or partonic energy loss effects

    The production of muons from heavy flavour decays is measured at forward rapidity in proton–proton collisions at √s=7 TeV collected with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The analysis is carried out on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity Lint=16.5 nb−1. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential production cross sections of muons from heavy flavour decays are measured in the rapidity range 2.5<y<4, over the transverse momentum range 2<pt<12 GeV/c. The results are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations
