    The New ‘Creative’Brick Lane

This article is a narrative study of local multicultural encounters taking place along Brick Lane in East London, UK. Although the area has been primarily researched for its Bangladeshi community, this article focuses on the ‘creative’ professionals who work and/or reside within the vicinity. It is a narrative investigation into their attitudes towards difference, ethnicity and the ethnic self. A multiplicity of local multicultural tales comes to the fore. In short, the multicultural realities of the area become narrated in many different ways, which clearly manifest a narrative complexity, unfolding within the new ‘creative’ Brick Lane. These different local multicultural narratives could also be indicative of the ways that multicultural meaning is created within London at large

Territorial Cohesion as a Policy Narrative: From Economic Competitiveness to ‘Smart’ Growth and Beyond

During the last two decades, a lot of ink has been spent in favour of narrative analysis of policy. According to such approaches, policy processes are influenced by narratives that are spread around specific ‘issues’ and lead to their solutions. Following a similar vein, this article examines territorial cohesion as a policy narrative and how it can be perceived as a narrative constituted by a diverse narrative structure. Territorial cohesion is a dynamic narrative that changes through time. As time goes by and different politico-economic philosophies get more influential, technological changes also bring along different priorities, broader EU narratives change, and territorial cohesion adapts to such changes. Accordingly, within the post-2014 framework (2014–2020), territorial cohesion’s (spatialised) social inclusion perspective was subdued to the economic competitiveness sub-narrative in a globalised world. For the new programming period (2021–2027), the European Cohesion Policy will continue to be increasingly linked to the place-based narrative and most of its funding will be directed towards a ‘smarter’ and ‘greener’ Europe within a global space of flows and fast technological changes. The aim of a ‘smarter’ Europe based on digital transformation and smart growth is a new version of the economic competitiveness sub-narrative, while a ‘greener’ Europe is the new policy meta-imperative (“European Green Deal”). However, it must be considered how the Coronavirus crisis and the measures to fight its economic effects play out on these policy narratives

Gentrification and difference: the case of Brixton and Brick Lane

    Get PDF
This thesis examines one of the biggest property booms of the capital that led the way to processes of gentrification to penetrate into some postcolonial spaces of the metropolis. More specifically, the areas of Brixton and Brick Lane transform into the spatial laboratories for an interrogation into the politics of cultural dialogue within contemporary instances of 'ethnic' gentrification. To put it differently, this thesis attempts to shed some light on processes of inner-transformation, as a result to an exposure to different differences, to either disorient or reify the cultural bearings of the metropolitan subject; it reflects on multiple negotiations and constructions of cultural or 'ethnic' differences in relation to these spaces of diversity. In this sense, culture is transformed into the main discursive arena of the multicultural city, where different people from different backgrounds and incomes try to make sense of their lives, experiences and futures within contemporary postmodem-postcolonial London. At the same time, this thesis contributes to a genre of cultural narratives that try to perplex urban political economy's stories. It aims to render the city visible beyond the sphere of economics and manifest the complexities of contemporary processes of urban transformation and multicultural life at large

TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL ANALYSIS OF GOAL SCORING PATTERNS IN THE 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP IN RUSSIA

The aims of this research are to record and analyze the goals scored during the 64 matches in the 21st World Cup in Russia in 2018, to highlight those factors that are directly related to the teams’ effectiveness in scoring, to record the goals approved after the use of the new technologies, video assistant referee and goal line technology, as well as their effect on the outcome of the game. Chi-square and univariate general linear methods were used for the data analysis. Statistical difference is observed in the number of goals scored between the two halves (XÂČ=8.699, p<0.005). A comparable percentage of scoring in most of the periods with exceptions of the periods in over time, the period 16th to 30th min, the addition time of the first and second half and the period 76th to 90th min of the game is determined (p<0.01). The teams that scored first won 71.4% matches, lost 9.5% and had a tie 19% of the matches (XÂČ=42.000, p<0.001). Most of the goals were scored following a corner kick (24), penalty (22) and free kick scored non-directly (16), which were significantly different from free kick scored directly (6) and throw in (2) (XÂČ=26.857, p<0.001). 19 goals were scored from cross, 19 from a long-range shot (8 of them with the “inner foot”), 18 from a forward pass and 12 from cutback. Statistical differences between the first four groups and all of the others are determined (XÂČ=27.818, p<0.01). Significant differences were found between the goals that “began” from the offensive third, the middle and the defensive third (XÂČ=73.645, p<0.001). 58.9% of the goals are scored following positional play, which is significantly different compared to counter attack (29.5%) and direct play (11.6%) (XÂČ=32.611, p<0.001). Over 59 goals were scored from “the inner part of the foot” or “place”, and 31 from header, which were significantly different from the other types of shot (XÂČ=89.254, p<0.001)

The purpose of this study was to examine possible differences and relations in Physical Education (P.E.) teachers’ perceived job satisfaction and burnout, in relation to educational sector (private vs public), educational level (primary vs secondary) and gender. Two hundred and eighty two P.E. teachers, aged from 24 to 65 years old (M = 43.6, SD = 5.45), both from elementary and secondary schools, participated in the study. One hundred of them served in private schools and 182 in public ones. Their working exprerience ranged from one to 37 years (M = 14.5, SD = 7.23). The Employee Satisfaction Inventory (Koustelios & Bagiatis, 1997) was employed to assess job satisfaction. For the measurement of burnout, Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1986), which has been validated for the Greek population, was used. The results revealed a negative relationship between job satisfaction and burnout. Private sector P.E. teachers seem to experience higher job satisfaction and lower burnout compared to their public sector colleagues. Furthermore, P.E. teachers who serve both in elementary and secondary schools, appear to experience higher job satisfaction. Finally, secondary P.E. teachers seem to experience lower burnout compared to their primary education colleagues. No statistically significant differences were found in relation to gender for both job satisfaction and burnout. Overall, it seems that P.E. teachers who work in private schools and/or in secondary education seem to be more satisfied and less burned-out. Implications of the aforementioned observed relationships are discussed.

Efficient Group K Nearest-Neighbor Spatial Query Processing in Apache Spark

    Get PDF
Aiming at the problem of spatial query processing in distributed computing systems, the design and implementation of new distributed spatial query algorithms is a current challenge. Apache Spark is a memory-based framework suitable for real-time and batch processing. Spark-based systems allow users to work on distributed in-memory data, without worrying about the data distribution mechanism and fault-tolerance. Given two datasets of points (called Query and Training), the group K nearest-neighbor (GKNN) query retrieves (K) points of the Training with the smallest sum of distances to every point of the Query. This spatial query has been actively studied in centralized environments and several performance improving techniques and pruning heuristics have been also proposed, while, a distributed algorithm in Apache Hadoop was recently proposed by our team. Since, in general, Apache Hadoop exhibits lower performance than Spark, in this paper, we present the first distributed GKNN query algorithm in Apache Spark and compare it against the one in Apache Hadoop. This algorithm incorporates programming features and facilities that are specific to Apache Spark. Moreover, techniques that improve performance and are applicable in Apache Spark are also incorporated. The results of an extensive set of experiments with real-world spatial datasets are presented, demonstrating that our Apache Spark GKNN solution, with its improvements, is efficient and a clear winner in comparison to processing this query in Apache Hadoop

Mountain Rivers Reveal the Earthquake Hazard of Geologic Faults in Silicon Valley

The 1989, Mw = 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake resulted in tens of lives lost and cost California almost 3% of its gross domestic product. Despite widespread damage, the earthquake did not clearly rupture the surface, challenging the identification and characterization of these hidden hazards. Here, we show that they can be illuminated by inverting fluvial topography for slip-and moment accrual-rates—fundamental components in earthquake hazard assessments—along relief-generating geologic faults. We applied this technique to thrust faults bounding the mountains along the western side of Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area, and discovered that these structures may be capable of generating a Mw = 6.9 earthquake every 250–300 years based on moment accrual rates. This method may be deployed broadly to evaluate seismic hazard in developing regions with limited geological and geophysical information

Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV

    Get PDF
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
