    Science may often be considered a discipline of absolutes and systematized knowledge, but science education in Iowa need not be so. To the young and enthusiastic Iowa student scientist there are a number of educational opportunities available that are exciting and relevant, as well as several which take place outside of the classroom. These extracurricular opportunities are designed to allow the secondary science student to realize a few of his educational aspirations while interacting directly with other professionals and student scientists from the state. Since I have been involved personally with some of the unique Iowa science educational opportunities as a high school student and now as a college student at The University of Iowa, it is obvious that they have been of great importance in helping me develop my scientific interests

    Assessing the performance of different prediction market formats in forecasting tasks

    Prediction markets have recently gained favour with the academic and business communities. Prediction markets have evolved a long way from their basic beginnings as friendly wagers among friends to become large scale markets connecting traders from around the world. They have been adopted into many large and dynamic corporations that require up to the minute information that can keep up with their business. Organisations like Google, HP, Yahoo! and Best Buy have been experimenting with prediction markets for demand forecasting tasks. Governments have also been using markets, although not always as successfully. The U.S. government looked at PAM which became the terrorist futures market in the post 9/11 world. This did not appeal to the American populous and it has since been withdrawn. Through technological advancements the capabilities and availability of prediction markets has grown. With this the interest in how they work and what can be done to improve the accuracy of the markets. This research looked at the inclusion of a deliberative technique to the markets to improve that accuracy of the market. For this research, markets that made use of discussion boards were used. They were compared against traditional markets, which had no means of communication between traders.The research took the form of a quantitative comparison between the two market types. Data was acquired from the Iowa Electronics Market (IEM) and Inkling Public Markets. The findings from this research indicate that there was a significant difference with α=0.012 for the markets at close. This indicated that there was a significant between the traditional (control) and non-traditional (experimental groups) markets from descriptive statistics it was indicated that the traditional markets performed better in the prediction tasks. The conclusions of this research indicate that allowing traders to communicate and see the actions of others creates group biases which impacts on their independence when making trades and thus on the performance of the market.CopyrightDissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012.Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)unrestricte

    The use of information and communication technologies by portuguese teachers

    We present a study made in Portugal, in 2001/2002, on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by teachers of all teaching levels (except high education), in both public and private schools. It was an initiative of the Ministry of Education (“Nonio – 21st Century” program), which was carried out by the Competence Centre “Softsciences” and the Centre for Computational Physics of the University of Coimbra. Some of the conclusions of this study, that has collected data from 19337 teachers, are the following: the majority of Portuguese teachers own a PC and approximately half of them use it in several activities, though their use of computers with students is limited. Primary school teachers use often the PC in their schools, though, probably, in an incipient way. The self-training of teachers in ICT is quite common. The Internet is more used by 3rd cycle (last part of middle school) and high school teachers, being most of its users male and young. These and other conclusions should be taken into account in a strategy towards incrementing a better use of new technologies in schools.     Hearing Loss in Stranded Odontocete Dolphins and Whales

    The causes of dolphin and whale stranding can often be difficult to determine. Because toothed whales rely on echolocation for orientation and feeding, hearing deficits could lead to stranding. We report on the results of auditory evoked potential measurements from eight species of odontocete cetaceans that were found stranded or severely entangled in fishing gear during the period 2004 through 2009. Approximately 57% of the bottlenose dolphins and 36% of the rough-toothed dolphins had significant hearing deficits with a reduction in sensitivity equivalent to severe (70–90 dB) or profound (>90 dB) hearing loss in humans. The only stranded short-finned pilot whale examined had profound hearing loss. No impairments were detected in seven Risso's dolphins from three different stranding events, two pygmy killer whales, one Atlantic spotted dolphin, one spinner dolphin, or a juvenile Gervais' beaked whale. Hearing impairment could play a significant role in some cetacean stranding events, and the hearing of all cetaceans in rehabilitation should be tested

    This paper presents a new optical imaging survey of four deep drilling fields (DDFs), two Galactic and two extragalactic, with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4 meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). During the first year of observations in 2021, >>4000 images covering 21 square degrees (7 DECam pointings), with ∌\sim40 epochs (nights) per field and 5 to 6 images per night per filter in gg, rr, ii, and/or zz, have become publicly available (the proprietary period for this program is waived). We describe the real-time difference-image pipeline and how alerts are distributed to brokers via the same distribution system as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). In this paper, we focus on the two extragalactic deep fields (COSMOS and ELAIS-S1), characterizing the detected sources and demonstrating that the survey design is effective for probing the discovery space of faint and fast variable and transient sources. We describe and make publicly available 4413 calibrated light curves based on difference-image detection photometry of transients and variables in the extragalactic fields. We also present preliminary scientific analysis regarding Solar System small bodies, stellar flares and variables, Galactic anomaly detection, fast-rising transients and variables, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables.     Behavioral context of echolocation and prey-handling sounds produced by killer whales (Orcinus orca) during pursuit and capture of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.).

    Availability of preferred salmonid prey and a sufficiently quiet acoustic environment in which to forage are critical to the survival of resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the northeastern Pacific. Although piscivorous killer whales rely on echolocation to locate and track prey, the relationship between echolocation, movement, and prey capture during foraging by wild individuals is poorly understood. We used acoustic biologging tags to relate echolocation behavior to prey pursuit and capture during successful feeding dives by fish-eating killer whales in coastal British Columbia, Canada. The significantly higher incidence and rate of echolocation prior to fish captures compared to afterward confirms its importance in prey detection and tracking. Extremely rapid click sequences (buzzes) were produced before or concurrent with captures of salmon at depths typically exceeding 50 m, and were likely used by killer whales for close-range prey targeting, as in other odontocetes. Distinctive crunching and tearing sounds indicative of prey handling behavior occurred at relatively shallow depths following fish captures, matching concurrent observations that whales surfaced with fish prior to consumption and often shared prey. Buzzes and prey-handling sounds are potentially useful acoustic signals for estimating foraging efficiency and determining if resident killer whales are meeting their energetic requirements

To passively and actively acquire information about their environment, cetaceans have perhaps the most derived ears of all mammals, capable of sophisticated, sensitive hearing and auditory processing. These capabilities have developed for survival in an underwater world where sound travels five times faster than in air, and where light is quickly attenuated and often limited at depth, at night, and in murky waters. Cetacean auditory evolution has capitalized on the ubiquity of sound cues and the efficiency of underwater acoustic communication. The sense of hearing is central to cetacean sensory ecology, enabling vital behaviors such as locating prey, detecting predators, identifying conspecifics, and navigating. Increasing levels of anthropogenic ocean noise appears to influence many of these activities. Here we describe the historical progress of investigations on cetacean hearing, with a particular focus on odontocetes and recent advancements. While this broad topic has been studied for several centuries, new technologies in the last two decades have been leveraged to improve our understanding of a wide range of taxa, including some of the most elusive species. This paper addresses topics including how sounds are received, what sounds are detected, hearing mechanisms for complex acoustic scenes, recent anatomy and physiology studies, the potential impacts of noise, and mysticete hearing.
