Ambipolar Field Effect in Topological Insulator Nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3
Topological insulators represent a new state of quantum matter attractive to
both fundamental physics and technological applications such as spintronics and
quantum information processing. In a topological insulator, the bulk energy gap
is traversed by spin-momentum locked surface states forming an odd number of
surface bands that possesses unique electronic properties. However, transport
measurements have often been dominated by residual bulk carriers from crystal
defects or environmental doping which mask the topological surface
contribution. Here we demonstrate (BixSb1-x)2Te3 as a tunable topological
insulator system to manipulate bulk conductivity by varying the Bi/Sb
composition ratio. (BixSb1-x)2Te3 ternary compounds are confirmed as
topological insulators for the entire composition range by angle resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and ab initio calculations.
Additionally, we observe a clear ambipolar gating effect similar to that
observed in graphene using nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3 in
field-effect-transistor (FET) devices. The manipulation of carrier type and
concentration in topological insulator nanostructures demonstrated in this
study paves the way for implementation of topological insulators in
nanoelectronics and spintronics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Adenovirus-Vectored Drug-Vaccine Duo as a Rapid-Response Tool for Conferring Seamless Protection against Influenza
Few other diseases exert such a huge toll of suffering as influenza. We report here that intranasal (i.n.) administration of E1/E3-defective (ÎE1E3) adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) particles rapidly induced an anti-influenza state as a means of prophylactic therapy which persisted for several weeks in mice. By encoding an influenza virus (IFV) hemagglutinin (HA) HA1 domain, an Ad5-HA1 vector conferred rapid protection as a prophylactic drug followed by elicitation of sustained protective immunity as a vaccine for inducing seamless protection against influenza as a drug-vaccine duo (DVD) in a single package. Since Ad5 particles induce a complex web of host responses, which could arrest influenza by activating a specific arm of innate immunity to impede IFV growth in the airway, it is conceivable that this multi-pronged influenza DVD may escape the fate of drug resistance that impairs the current influenza drugs
Measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates and constraints on its couplings from a combined ATLAS and CMS analysis of the LHC pp collision data at root s=7 and 8 TeV
70 pages plus author lists + cover page (104 pages total), 32 figures, 22 tables, submitted to JHEP. All figures including auxiliary figures are available at https://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/HIGG-2015-07/ and at http://cms-results.web.cern.ch/cms-results/public-results/publications/HIG-15-002/Combined ATLAS and CMS measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates, as well as constraints on its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The combination is based on the analysis of five production processes, namely gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a or a boson or a pair of top quarks, and of the six decay modes , , and . All results are reported assuming a value of 125.09 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, the result of the combined measurement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The analysis uses the CERN LHC proton--proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities per experiment of approximately 5 fb at TeV and 20 fb at TeV. The Higgs boson production and decay rates measured by the two experiments are combined within the context of three generic parameterisations: two based on cross sections and branching fractions, and one on ratios of coupling modifiers. Several interpretations of the measurements with more model-dependent parameterisations are also given. The combined signal yield relative to the Standard Model prediction is measured to be 1.09 0.11. The combined measurements lead to observed significances for the vector boson fusion production process and for the decay of and standard deviations, respectively. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions for all parameterisations considered.Peer reviewe

An Electrodynamic Wheel Maglev Vehicle with a Passive U-Guideway
This paper reports on the electromagnetic analysis and experimental testing of a newly invented six-degree of freedom electrodynamic wheel (EDW) magnetic levitation (maglev) vehicle that can stably levitate over a passive low-cost U-guideway. The U-guideway is composed of two sections of L-track aluminum sheet. Both a radial and an axial proof-of-principle EDW maglev vehicle has been built and experimentally tested. The EDW-maglev vehicle contains four one pole-pair diametric magnetized magnets that are driven using a low-cost motor and motor controller. No advanced controls are needed to provide basic stability. A 3-D transient finite element analysis model was used to study the 3-D forces created when the magnets are rotated over the aluminum L-track. The track design study showed that in addition to providing lateral recentering force the L-track can also be used to increases thrust and lift force
