    In situ probe of photocarrier dynamics in water-splitting hematite (α-Fe_(2)O_3) electrodes

    The spectra and dynamics of photogenerated electrons and holes in excited hematite (α-Fe_(2)O_3) electrodes are investigated by transient absorption (from visible to infrared and from femto- to micro-seconds), bias-dependent differential absorption and Stark spectroscopy. Comparison of results from these techniques enables the assignment of the spectral signatures of photogenerated electrons and holes. Under the pulse illumination conditions of transient absorption (TA) measurement, the absorbed photon to electron conversion efficiency (APCE) of the films at 1.43 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) is 0.69%, significantly lower than that at AM 1.5. TA kinetics shows that under these conditions, >98% of the photogenerated electrons and holes have recombined by 6 μs. Although APCE increases with more positive bias (from 0.90 to 1.43 V vs. RHE), the kinetics of holes up to 6 μs show negligible change, suggesting that the catalytic activity of the films is determined by holes with longer lifetimes

    Active adaptive conservation of threatened species in the face of uncertainty

    Adaptive management has a long history in the natural resource management literature, but despite this, few practitioners have developed adaptive strategies to conserve threatened species. Active adaptive management provides a framework for valuing learning by measuring the degree to which it improves long-run management outcomes. The challenge of an active adaptive approach is to find the correct balance between gaining knowledge to improve management in the future and achieving the best short-term outcome based on current knowledge. We develop and analyze a framework for active adaptive management of a threatened species. Our case study concerns a novel facial tumor disease affecting the Australian threatened species Sarcophilus harrisii: the Tasmanian devil. We use stochastic dynamic programming with Bayesian updating to identify the management strategy that maximizes the Tasmanian devil population growth rate, taking into account improvements to management through learning to better understand disease latency and the relative effectiveness of three competing management options. Exactly which management action we choose each year is driven by the credibility of competing hypotheses about disease latency and by the population growth rate predicted by each hypothesis under the competing management actions. We discover that the optimal combination of management actions depends on the number of sites available and the time remaining to implement management. Our approach to active adaptive management provides a framework to identify the optimal amount of effort to invest in learning to achieve long-run conservation objectives

    Spinal involvement in mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (Morquio-Brailsford or Morquio A syndrome): presentation, diagnosis and management.

    Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA), also known as Morquio-Brailsford or Morquio A syndrome, is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme N-acetyl-galactosamine-6-sulphate sulphatase (GALNS). MPS IVA is multisystemic but manifests primarily as a progressive skeletal dysplasia. Spinal involvement is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in MPS IVA. Early diagnosis and timely treatment of problems involving the spine are critical in preventing or arresting neurological deterioration and loss of function. This review details the spinal manifestations of MPS IVA and describes the tools used to diagnose and monitor spinal involvement. The relative utility of radiography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of cervical spine instability, stenosis, and cord compression is discussed. Surgical interventions, anaesthetic considerations, and the use of neurophysiological monitoring during procedures performed under general anaesthesia are reviewed. Recommendations for regular radiological imaging and neurologic assessments are presented, and the need for a more standardized approach for evaluating and managing spinal involvement in MPS IVA is addressed

    Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson with the OPAL Detector at LEP

    This paper summarises the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV performed by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The consistency of the data with the background hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses is examined. No indication of a signal is found in the data and a lower bound of 112.7GeV/C^2 is obtained on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the 95% CL.Comment: 51 pages, 21 figure

    Assessment of a spodumene ore by advanced analytical and mass spectrometry techniques to determine its amenability to processing for the extraction of lithium

    A combination of analytical microscopy and mass spectrometry techniques have been used to detect and characterise different lithium minerals in a LCT-Complex spodumene-type pegmatite from Pilgangoora located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Information collated by these techniques can be used to predict processing amenability. Samples were categorised into three subsamples (Pil1, Pil2, Pil3) based on colour and texture having different lithologies. The mineralogy and liberation characteristics of samples were characterised using automated mineralogy techniques and the Li content and elemental distribution within minerals defined using instrumentation with secondary mass spectrometry capabilities. The majority of lithium is associated with spodumene particles with minor amounts of lithium bearing micas and beryl in the Pil1 sample, whereas in Pil2 and Pil3 spodumene is largely the lithium source. In the Pil1 sample a proportion of spodumene particles have undergone alteration with spodumene being replaced by micaceous minerals of muscovite, lepidolite and trilithionite, as well as calcite. In Pil2 and Pil3 samples the spodumene particles are generally free of mineral impurities except minor intergrowths of quartz, feldspar and spodumene are evident in the coarser fractions. Based on mineralogical observations in the current study, the majority of the main gangue minerals quartz, K feldspar and albite can be rejected at a coarse grind size of −4 mm, to recover 90% of the spodumene with Li upgrade from 0.99–1.5 wt% Li to 3.0–3.5 wt% (6.5–7.5 wt% Li 2 O). The iron content (81–1475 ppm) in the spodumene is low and therefore make these spodumene concentrates suitable for use in ceramic and glass applications. Recovery of spodumene in the coarse fractions could be improved by further particle size reduction to liberate spodumene from micas and feldspars in the middling class, which account for between 15 and 49% of the sample. However, the requirement to remove mineral impurities in the spodumene in downstream processing will be dependent on the method of processing as the presence of Li bearing micas, calcite and feldspar can be beneficial or detrimental to lithium recovery. The high content of Rb (1 wt%) and the abundance of free grains makes K feldspar a source of rubidium, particularly in the Pil3 sample which has K feldspar in high abundance (21 wt%) and can potentially be recovered by reverse flotation technique. The low concentrations of the Ta, Nb and Sn minerals identified in samples were found to be fairly well liberated and could be recovered by conventional gravity separation techniques

    The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey of SDSS-III

    The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) is designed to measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of matter over a larger volume than the combined efforts of all previous spectroscopic surveys of large scale structure. BOSS uses 1.5 million luminous galaxies as faint as i=19.9 over 10,000 square degrees to measure BAO to redshifts z<0.7. Observations of neutral hydrogen in the Lyman alpha forest in more than 150,000 quasar spectra (g<22) will constrain BAO over the redshift range 2.15<z<3.5. Early results from BOSS include the first detection of the large-scale three-dimensional clustering of the Lyman alpha forest and a strong detection from the Data Release 9 data set of the BAO in the clustering of massive galaxies at an effective redshift z = 0.57. We project that BOSS will yield measurements of the angular diameter distance D_A to an accuracy of 1.0% at redshifts z=0.3 and z=0.57 and measurements of H(z) to 1.8% and 1.7% at the same redshifts. Forecasts for Lyman alpha forest constraints predict a measurement of an overall dilation factor that scales the highly degenerate D_A(z) and H^{-1}(z) parameters to an accuracy of 1.9% at z~2.5 when the survey is complete.
