    The concept of "the human" in the work of Hermann Hesse and Paul Tillich

    "The Concept of 'the Human' in the Work of Hermann Hesse and Paul Tillich" is an interdisciplinary study in theology and literature. Three chapters each on Hesse and Tillich discuss the life work, and critical significance of both men. The seventh chapter compares their similarities and their contrasting views. In his work Hermann Hesse singles out the artist as the best example of true personhood and believes that individuals become fully human by being aesthetes, possessing ironic humor, learning to love unconditionally, expressing themselves while at play, transcending themselves through magical thinking, i.e., bringing into harmony the polarities of life, and finally, by assuming ethical responsibility for life to the point of sacrificial service. In the work of Paul Tillich existential man experiences estrangement, but essential man possesses a vision of wholeness and therefore of potentiality. However, maturity is to be found in becoming reconciled. Jesus as the Christ is the New Being who reunites man with God, Sanctification describes what it means to be fully human, and participation in a theonomous culture requires that one help make human life more human for others. The final chapter compares the life and work of Hesse and Tillich and concludes; both men have a tripartite view of human nature, they recognize the ambiguities of life as well as the demonic element in man, perfection is beyond an individual's grasp hut fulfillment is not, and both men are humanists who oppose dehumanization. They differ in that Tillich is more interested in ontology than in psychology, Hesse stresses self-realisation, whereas Tillich: stresses becoming whole by way of reunion with Being-itself. Hesse appreciates the aesthetic and ethical stages of life but lacks Tillich's emphasis on the depth dimension. Hesse's answer to the human situation is autonomous rather than theonomous as advocated by Tillich. The implications of both Hesse's and Tillich's thought include the following: becoming fully; human is a lifelong process; man is most human when he reflects his best self or the image of God; being human must address itself to the perennial problems of man (sin, suffering, and death); anthropology rather than dogmatic theology is the arena in which the theological enterprise should take placer and finally. the contemporary church needs to be aware of the necessity for both personal religious experience and social action

    Unlocking biomarker discovery: Large scale application of aptamer proteomic technology for early detection of lung cancer

    Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, because ~84% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Worldwide in 2008, ~1.5 million people were diagnosed and ~1.3 million died – a survival rate unchanged since 1960. However, patients diagnosed at an early stage and have surgery experience an 86% overall 5-year survival. New diagnostics are therefore needed to identify lung cancer at this stage. Here we present the first large scale clinical use of aptamers to discover blood protein biomarkers in disease with our breakthrough proteomic technology. This multi-center case-control study was conducted in archived samples from 1,326 subjects from four independent studies of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in long-term tobacco-exposed populations. We measured >800 proteins in 15uL of serum, identified 44 candidate biomarkers, and developed a 12-protein panel that distinguished NSCLC from controls with 91% sensitivity and 84% specificity in a training set and 89% sensitivity and 83% specificity in a blinded, independent verification set. Performance was similar for early and late stage NSCLC. This is a significant advance in proteomics in an area of high clinical need

    CD68 antigen expression by human retinal pigment epithelial cells

    Although a primary role of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the phagocytosis of aged outer segment membranes, the RPE may also phagocytize particulates via several specific receptors that are characteristically present on mononuclear phagocytes of bone marrow origin. In recent immunophenotypic studies, CD68 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) have been shown to react selectively with a specific 110 kDa cytoplasmic glycoprotein present in mononuclear phagocytes from various sources. Designated as anti-macrophage antibodies that react with this macrophage-associated antigen. CD68 antibodies are now widely used for immunohistochemical identification of mononuclear phagocytes. Using a panel of CD68 mAb (KP1, EBM11, Ki-M6, Y1/82A, and Y2/131) we performed immunohistochemistry on three cytospin preparations of freshly isolated human RPE cells, three primary human RPE cultures, and 12 human RPE cell lines maintained in culture for up to 40 passages. Cytospin preparations of freshly isolated RPE cells demonstrated heavy reactivity in 5% of cells. Five- to 7-day-old primary RPE cultures exhibited uniform, heavy staining of all cells. Strong immunohistochemical reactivity persisted in all 12 cell lines at various passages up to and including passage 40. Stimulation of cultured RPE cells with interferon-gamma (100 U ml-1) for 24 and 48 hr did not produce observable differences in CD68 staining. RPE cells failed to stain when control mAb or mouse serum were substituted for the primary antibody. The constitutive expression of CD68 by neuroectodermally-derived RPE cells extends their immunophenotypic similarities with mesenchymally-derived mononuclear phagocytes and provides an additional antigenic marker to identify RPE cells in vitro.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/29954/1/0000314.pd

    The foot in forensic human identification - a review

    The identification of human remains is a process which can be attempted irrespective of the stage of decomposition in which the remains are found or the anatomical regions recovered. In recent years, the discovery of fragmented human remains has garnered significant attention from the national and international media, particularly the recovery of multiple lower limbs and feet from coastlines in North America. While cases such as these stimulate public curiosity, they present unique challenges to forensic practitioners in relation to the identification of the individual from whom the body part originated. There is a paucity of literature pertaining to the foot in forensic human identification and in particular, in relation to the assessment of the parameters represented by the biological profile. This article presents a review of the literature relating to the role of the foot in forensic human identification and highlights the areas in which greater research is required. © 2013

    Prevalence, molecular markers, and outcome of bronchial squamous carcinoma in situ in high-risk subjects

We conducted prospective autofluorescence and white light bronchoscopy trials between 1992 and 2016 to assess the prevalence, molecular markers, and outcome of individuals with CIS and other preneoplastic bronchial lesions. Biopsies were evaluated at multiple levels and selected biopsies were tested for aneuploidy and DNA sequenced for TP53 mutation. Thirty-one individuals with CIS were identified. Twenty-two cases of CIS occurred in association with concurrent invasive carcinomas. Seven of the invasive tumors were radiographically occult. In two cases, CIS spread from the focus of invasive carcinoma into contralateral lung lobes, forming secondary invasive tumors. In nine cases, CIS occurred as isolated lesions and one progressed to invasive squamous carcinoma at the same site 40 months after discovery. In a second case, CIS was a precursor of carcinoma at a separate site in a different lobe. In seven cases CIS regressed to a lower grade or disappeared. High level chromosomal aneusomy was often associated with TP53 mutation and with invasive carcinoma. CIS most often occurs in association with invasive squamous carcinoma and may extend along the airways into distant lobes. In rare cases, CIS may be observed to directly transform into invasive carcinoma. CIS may be indicative of invasive tumor at a separate distant site. Isolated CIS may regress. Molecular changes parallel histological changes in CIS and may be used to map clonal expansion in the airways.Peer reviewe

    A search for resonant production of ttˉt\bar{t} pairs in $4.8\ \rm{fb}^{-1}ofintegratedluminosityof of integrated luminosity of p\bar{p}collisionsat collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96\ \rm{TeV}$

    We search for resonant production of tt pairs in 4.8 fb^{-1} integrated luminosity of ppbar collision data at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV in the lepton+jets decay channel, where one top quark decays leptonically and the other hadronically. A matrix element reconstruction technique is used; for each event a probability density function (pdf) of the ttbar candidate invariant mass is sampled. These pdfs are used to construct a likelihood function, whereby the cross section for resonant ttbar production is estimated, given a hypothetical resonance mass and width. The data indicate no evidence of resonant production of ttbar pairs. A benchmark model of leptophobic Z \rightarrow ttbar is excluded with m_{Z'} < 900 GeV at 95% confidence level.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review D Sep 21, 201

    Observation of Exclusive Gamma Gamma Production in p pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We have observed exclusive \gamma\gamma production in proton-antiproton collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, using data from 1.11 \pm 0.07 fb^{-1} integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. We selected events with two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E_T > 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |\eta| < 1.0, with no other particles detected in -7.4 < \eta < +7.4. The two showers have similar E_T and azimuthal angle separation \Delta\phi \sim \pi; 34 events have two charged particle tracks, consistent with the QED process p \bar{p} to p + e^+e^- + \bar{p} by two-photon exchange, while 43 events have no charged tracks. The number of these events that are exclusive \pi^0\pi^0 is consistent with zero and is < 15 at 95% C.L. The cross section for p\bar{p} to p+\gamma\gamma+\bar{p} with |\eta(\gamma)| < 1.0 and E_T(\gamma) > 2.5$ GeV is 2.48^{+0.40}_{-0.35}(stat)^{+0.40}_{-0.51}(syst) pb.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
