Asymptotic analysis of singular problems in perforated cylinders.

    Get PDF
In this paper, we deal with elliptic problems having terms singular in the variable uu which represents the solution. The problems are posed in cylinders Ωnε of height 2n and perforated according to a parameter ε. We study existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of the solutions uεn as the cylinders become infinite (n→+∞) and the size of the holes decreases while the number of the holes increases (ε→0)

First record of a hagfish anchored to a living bottlenose dolphin in the Mediterranean Sea

An unusual observation of a hagfish ( Myxine glutinosa ) anchored to a living bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus ) was documented in an encounter with a group of about 80 dolphins during an ongoing long-term research program on cetaceans in the central Mediterranean Sea, Italy. The body of the hagfish was observed extruding from the blowhole of the bottlenose dolphin showing a stereotypical surfacing–breathing pattern. The observation lasted 2h; photo-identification, acoustic, and behavioral data were collected. Succorant behaviors (i.e., "standing by") from conspecifics and overlapping vocalizations during social phases were recorded. The dolphin was encountered again after 1 month in the same area without the hagfish, apparently in healthy conditions

Evaluation of ICD-9-CM codes for craniofacial microsomia

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a congenital condition characterized by microtia and mandibular underdevelopment. Healthcare databases and birth defects surveillance programs could be used to improve knowledge of CFM. However, no specific ICD-9-CM code exists for this condition, which makes standardized data collection challenging. Our aim was to evaluate the validity of existing ICD-9-CM codes to identify individuals with CFM

    Get PDF

A communal catalogue reveals Earth’s multiscale microbial diversity

Our growing awareness of the microbial world’s importance and diversity contrasts starkly with our limited understanding of its fundamental structure. Despite recent advances in DNA sequencing, a lack of standardized protocols and common analytical frameworks impedes comparisons among studies, hindering the development of global inferences about microbial life on Earth. Here we present a meta-analysis of microbial community samples collected by hundreds of researchers for the Earth Microbiome Project. Coordinated protocols and new analytical methods, particularly the use of exact sequences instead of clustered operational taxonomic units, enable bacterial and archaeal ribosomal RNA gene sequences to be followed across multiple studies and allow us to explore patterns of diversity at an unprecedented scale. The result is both a reference database giving global context to DNA sequence data and a framework for incorporating data from future studies, fostering increasingly complete characterization of Earth’s microbial diversity

Widespread bodily pain is not associated with the presence of painful TMJ osteoarthritis: a case control study

    No full text
Purpose: Temporomandibular Joint Arthralgia (TMJA) in the absence of osteoarthritis has not been thoroughly studied. We aimed to investigate the presence of comorbid bodily pain conditions (CBPC) in patients with TMJA with and without TMJOA and hypothesized that TMJOA is not associated with a higher presence of CBPC. Methods: This is a retrospective study involving patients at the University of North Carolina Orofacial Pain Clinic between 2010 and 2014 with TMJA according to the RDC/TMD criteria [
