Direct instruction wakeup for out-of-order processors

    Get PDF
Instruction queues consume a significant amount of power in high-performance processors, primarily due to instruction wakeup logic access to the queue structures. The wakeup logic delay is also a critical timing parameter. This paper proposes a new queue organization using a small number of successor pointers plus a small number of dynamically allocated full successor bit vectors for cases with a larger number of successors. The details of the new organization are described and it is shown to achieve the performance of CAM-based or full dependency matrix organizations using just one pointer per instruction plus eight full bit vectors. Only two full bit vectors are needed when two successor pointers are stored per instruction. Finally, a design and pre-layout of all critical structures in 70 nm technology was performed for the proposed organization as well as for a CAM-based baseline. The new design is shown to use 1/2 to 1/5th of the baseline instruction queue power, depending on queue size. It is also shown to use significantly less power than the full dependency matrix based design.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Adaptable register file organization for vector processors

    Get PDF
Contemporary Vector Processors (VPs) are de-signed either for short vector lengths, e.g., Fujitsu A64FX with 512-bit ARM SVE vector support, or long vectors, e.g., NEC Aurora Tsubasa with 16Kbits Maximum Vector Length (MVL1). Unfortunately, both approaches have drawbacks. On the one hand, short vector length VP designs struggle to provide high efficiency for applications featuring long vectors with high Data Level Parallelism (DLP). On the other hand, long vector VP designs waste resources and underutilize the Vector Register File (VRF) when executing low DLP applications with short vector lengths. Therefore, those long vector VP implementations are limited to a specialized subset of applications, where relatively high DLP must be present to achieve excellent performance with high efficiency. Modern scientific applications are getting more diverse, and the vector lengths in those applications vary widely. To overcome these limitations, we propose an Adaptable Vector Architecture (AVA) that leads to having the best of both worlds. AVA is designed for short vectors (MVL=16 elements) and is thus area and energy-efficient. However, AVA has the functionality to reconfigure the MVL, thereby allowing to exploit the benefits of having a longer vector of up to 128 elements microarchitecture when abundant DLP is present. We model AVA on the gem5 simulator and evaluate AVA performance with six applications taken from the RiVEC Benchmark Suite. To obtain area and power consumption metrics, we model AVA on McPAT for 22nm technology. Our results show that by reconfiguring our small VRF (8KB) plus our novel issue queue scheme, AVA yields a 2X speedup over the default configuration for short vectors. Additionally, AVA shows competitive performance when compared to a long vector VP, while saving 50% of area.Research reported in this publication is partially supported by CONACyT Mexico under Grant No. 472106, the Spanish State Research Agency - Ministry of Science and Innovation (contract PID2019-107255GB), and the European Union Regional Development Fund within the framework of the ERDF Operational Program of Catalonia 2014-2020 with a grant of 50% of the total cost eligible, under the DRAC project [001-P-001723].Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Método a bajo costo para la cuantificación del grado alcohólico en muestras de tequila blanco

The green chemistry in the chemical analysis area consists of the design of qualitative or quantitative techniques that make a minimum generation of residues and have a validity in the results comparable to traditional methods. The microscale chemistry has had a relevant role in recent years in order to modify and implement new methodologies for the quantification of chemical analytes. In this project, a technique for quantifying the alcoholic content of tequila samples was developed based on the chemical principles of alcohol oxidation, which is a colorimetric technique that allows identifying the presence of an alcohol. The objective of the project was to apply the color change of the ethanol oxidation and to quantify it´s content based on the intensity of the blue color generated in the oxidation, using a low-cost photocolorimeter. The results were comparable with the obtained with a spectrophotometer, it was validated by a statistical method to know their reliability and finally, a correlation was made so that the same results were obtained with the proposed technique as with the commercial equipment.

Spread of a SARS-CoV-2 variant through Europe in the summer of 2020

[EN] Following its emergence in late 2019, the spread of SARS-CoV-21,2 has been tracked by phylogenetic analysis of viral genome sequences in unprecedented detail3,4,5. Although the virus spread globally in early 2020 before borders closed, intercontinental travel has since been greatly reduced. However, travel within Europe resumed in the summer of 2020. Here we report on a SARS-CoV-2 variant, 20E (EU1), that was identified in Spain in early summer 2020 and subsequently spread across Europe. We find no evidence that this variant has increased transmissibility, but instead demonstrate how rising incidence in Spain, resumption of travel, and lack of effective screening and containment may explain the variant’s success. Despite travel restrictions, we estimate that 20E (EU1) was introduced hundreds of times to European countries by summertime travellers, which is likely to have undermined local efforts to minimize infection with SARS-CoV-2. Our results illustrate how a variant can rapidly become dominant even in the absence of a substantial transmission advantage in favourable epidemiological settings. Genomic surveillance is critical for understanding how travel can affect transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and thus for informing future containment strategies as travel resumes.S

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Get PDF
Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests.Additional co-authors: Susan Laurance, William Laurance, Francoise Yoko Ishida, Andrew Marshall, Catherine Waite, Hannsjoerg Woell, Jean-Francois Bastin, Marijn Bauters, Hans Beeckman, Pfascal Boeckx, Jan Bogaert, Charles De Canniere, Thales de Haulleville, Jean-Louis Doucet, Olivier Hardy, Wannes Hubau, Elizabeth Kearsley, Hans Verbeeck, Jason Vleminckx, Steven W. Direct instruction wakeup for out-of-order processors

    No full text
It is also shown to use significantly less power than the full dependency matrix based design.Peer Reviewe

Evaluación de tecnología para maximizar la producción de chile serrano en la Región Lagunera

Mexico has an extensive genetic diversity of green chile with about 40 varieties. The chile serrano is a favourite for fresh consumption for making sauces. For its adaptability, chile serrano is produced in regions that cover a wide range of environmental conditions; however, yields achieved are contrasting by the different levels of technology applied. In the Lagunera region of Coahuila and Durango, the average yield reaches 65% of the state average with the highest production of this vegetable. However, previous studies with other crops have shown that it is possible to reach and even surpass the highest producing States using improved varieties in combination of techniques such as drip irrigation and plastic mulch. The aim of this study was to evaluate technology to increase production, productivity and profitability of growing chile serrano in the Lagunera Region. We tested the commercial hybrids Camino Real F1, Montero and Arista F1, as well as some strategies to precisely control the water regime in chile serrano grown with drip irrigation and plastic mulch. These strategies involved the use of two methods for calculating water consumption and two alternatives for the placement of the irrigation tract. The results indicated that, the factors studied significantly affected yield, water use efficiency and fruit quality, achieving comparable or higher yields than those recorded in the States with the highest production.México tiene una extensa diversidad genética de chile verde con alrededor de 40 variedades.
