Mobile Platforms as Two-sided Markets

Mobile platforms combine state-of-the-art mobile phones, i.e., smartphones, with innovative operating systems and so-called app stores. App stores are a special kind of search and product market. They allow consumers to search, buy and install apps for their smartphone. These apps are built for a specific operating system and provide additional functionality. App developers use the app store to promote and sell their products. Adoption by consumers and developers depends on the platform as a whole. We introduce the notion of two-sided markets to mobile platforms. Apple’s iPhone and App Store as well as Google’s Android phones and market are described as a practical example. Theories of two-sided markets are reviewed and analyzed for their applicability to the mobile platform scenario. We identify and discuss promising aspects, pitfalls and shortcomings of existing models. Open research questions are revealed. We find that Rochet and Tirole’s model of two-sided markets provides a good match. It explains some of the peculiarities observed. However, as other models, it falls short of comprehensively representing the mobile scenario. Hence, we identify what a comprehensive model needs to provide and outline extensions to existing models. Furthermore, we apply the work of Parker and Van Alstyne to motivate the strategic decisions observed in the mobile market

Phylogenetic revision of desert fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae: microphotus)

Morphological, mtCOI DNA, and luciferase DNA data are analyzed individually and simultaneously for phylogenetic signal. Analysis of 16 characters traditionally used in species identification for 317 individual Microphotus specimens yields 5000 trees with poor resolution. Although mtCOI and luciferase data conflict in basal clades, both contribute to the phylogeny of Microphotus. Based on lack of morphological variation and geographic and temporal proximity of collection localities, M. decarthrus Fall 1912 and M. fragilis Oliver 1912 are synonomized. Microphotus octarthrus Fall occurs throughout the southwestern United States in discontinuous pinyon-juniper and juniper-oak habitats. Wide geographic distribution, discontinuous habitat and limited dispersal capabilities of females makes this species ideal for the study of genetic variation. MantelÂs approximate t test indicates that populations are both geographically and genetically isolated. Twenty-six haplotypes are found among 28 individuals; haplotypes are unique for the populations studied. When subjected to a 2.3% sequence divergence rate, mean branch lengths suggest segregation of populations began in the Holocene, before Pleistocene glaciation. Although these data suggest greater species diversity, more data, including mating behavior and more genes are required to further elucidate species limits

Play on the proper names of individuals in the Catullan corpus: wordplay, the iambic tradition, and the late Republican culture of public abuse

The paper explores the significance of names and naming in Catullus. Catullus’ use of proper names, and in particular his play on the connotations of the names of individuals who are attacked within his poems, has not been fully explored to date, and the paper identifies several examples of such play which have not previously been recognized. The paper examines Catullan wordplay in the context of both the iambic tradition and the public abuse culture of the late Roman Republic

Proteome Serological Determination of Tumor-Associated Antigens in Melanoma

Proteome serology may complement expression library-based approaches as strategy utilizing the patients' immune responses for the identification pathogenesis factors and potential targets for therapy and markers for diagnosis. Melanoma is a relatively immunogenic tumor and antigens recognized by melanoma-specific T cells have been extensively studied. The specificities of antibody responses to this malignancy have been analyzed to some extent by molecular genetic but not proteomics approaches. We screened sera of 94 melanoma patients for anti-melanoma reactivity and detected seropositivity in two-thirds of the patients with 2–6 antigens per case detected by 1D and an average of 2.3 per case by 2D Western blot analysis. For identification, antigen spots in Western blots were aligned with proteins in 2-DE and analyzed by mass spectrometry. 18 antigens were identified, 17 of which for the first time for melanoma. One of these antigens, galectin-3, has been related to various oncogenic processes including metastasis formation and invasiveness. Similarly, enolase has been found deregulated in different cancers. With at least 2 of 18 identified proteins implicated in oncogenic processes, the work confirms the potential of proteome-based antigen discovery to identify pathologically relevant proteins
