    Relationship between Economic Value and Species diversity of Timber Resources in a Hill Forest in Peninsular Malaysia

    Timber resource is a major component of tropical forest and usually undervalued economically. This paper attempts to examine the relationship between economic value and species diversity of a hill dipterocarp forest in Peninsular Malaysia. The rank-abundance curve described a lognormal distribution pattern, indicating high diversity communities. The species diversity indices obtained were high: Fisher’s alpha diversity index ranged from 96.53 to 109.56, Shannon-Weiner index were 5.29 to 5.39, while values of Simpson Index ranged from 134.02 to 151.11. The estimated mean stumpage value per hectare was Malaysian Ringgit RM25 413 and the main contribution was from the family Dipterocarpaceae. The regression analysis showed that the relationship between stumpage value and species diversity was not significant at the 5% level (p>0.05). Timber volume, size of trees and the presence of high timber value have great influence on the stumpage value for a given forest area

    Payment for ecosystem services (pes) in watershed area: Bintang Hijau Forest Reserve, Perak

    PES is an innovative mechanism for ensuring and enhancing the provision of ecosystem goods and services through the transfer of financial resources. The basic concept of PES is that those who benefit from ecosystem services should pay damages or rewards to those who provide a service. One of the main features of PES is a voluntary transaction. This study focused on Air Masyarakat; one of the most important watershed products in Bintang Hijau Forest Reserve, Perak. The area was chosen based on its importance and it has a great impact on the local community. It is to provide a PES mechanism option guideline for the Air Masyarakat services in Bintang Hijau Forest Reserve which involved users of Air Masyarakat (local community) and water supply agencies (Lembaga Air Perak). This mechanism is established to ensure financial sustainability to cover the costs involved in managing and conserving Bintang Hijau Forest Reserve. The mechanism will be a source of reference and guidance to responsible parties such as the State Forestry Department to manage the watershed area more efficiently and sustainably

    Notes on the distribution and ecology of Aquilaria Lam. ( Thymelaeaceae) in Malaysia

    Gaharu is the resin produced from trees of the genus Aquilaria Lam. In Malaysia, there are five species of Aquilaria, viz. A. beccariana Van Tiegh, A. hirta Ridl., A. malaccensis Lam., A. microcarpa Baill. and A. rostrata Ridl. These species have been put by CITES in Appendix II which regulates trade in species that could potentially lead to extinction. A study was undertaken to re-examine the distribution and ecology of the different Aquilaria species in Malaysia. Besides generating data from field trips, additional data were obtained from the Fourth National Forest Inventory of Peninsular Malaysia (NFI 4). A total of 232 specimens had also been studied from the herbaria at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKMB), Singapore Botanic Gardens (SING), University of Malaya (KLU), Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (KEP), Sarawak Forestry Department (SAR) and Sabah Forestry Department (SAN). The distribution of A. malaccensis which supplies the largest bulk of gaharu being traded locally and internationally is widespread in our Malaysian forests except the state of Perlis. The remaining species can be found from the primary lowland forest up to an altitude of 825m a.s.l. in various habitats. Information obtained on the distribution and ecology of Aquilaria species in Malaysia will be valuable to the State Forestry Departments for the conservation and management of these resources in the wild and also plantations

    Albiglutide and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Harmony Outcomes): a double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial

    Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Methods: We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515. Findings: Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were evaluated for a median duration of 1·6 years and were assessed for the primary outcome. The primary composite outcome occurred in 338 (7%) of 4731 patients at an incidence rate of 4·6 events per 100 person-years in the albiglutide group and in 428 (9%) of 4732 patients at an incidence rate of 5·9 events per 100 person-years in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·78, 95% CI 0·68–0·90), which indicated that albiglutide was superior to placebo (p<0·0001 for non-inferiority; p=0·0006 for superiority). The incidence of acute pancreatitis (ten patients in the albiglutide group and seven patients in the placebo group), pancreatic cancer (six patients in the albiglutide group and five patients in the placebo group), medullary thyroid carcinoma (zero patients in both groups), and other serious adverse events did not differ between the two groups. There were three (<1%) deaths in the placebo group that were assessed by investigators, who were masked to study drug assignment, to be treatment-related and two (<1%) deaths in the albiglutide group. Interpretation: In patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, albiglutide was superior to placebo with respect to major adverse cardiovascular events. Evidence-based glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists should therefore be considered as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes.     Cabbage and fermented vegetables : From death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

    Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance as well as lung and endothelial damage, two severe outcomes of COVID-19. The nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is the most potent antioxidant in humans and can block in particular the AT(1)R axis. Cabbage contains precursors of sulforaphane, the most active natural activator of Nrf2. Fermented vegetables contain many lactobacilli, which are also potent Nrf2 activators. Three examples are: kimchi in Korea, westernized foods, and the slum paradox. It is proposed that fermented cabbage is a proof-of-concept of dietary manipulations that may enhance Nrf2-associated antioxidant effects, helpful in mitigating COVID-19 severity.Peer reviewe

    Nrf2-interacting nutrients and COVID-19 : time for research to develop adaptation strategies

    There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPAR gamma:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NF kappa B: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2 alpha:Elongation initiation factor 2 alpha). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT(1)R axis (AT(1)R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity

    Global age-sex-specific mortality, life expectancy, and population estimates in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1950–2021, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic: a comprehensive demographic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

    Background: Estimates of demographic metrics are crucial to assess levels and trends of population health outcomes. The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations worldwide has underscored the need for timely estimates to understand this unprecedented event within the context of long-term population health trends. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 provides new demographic estimates for 204 countries and territories and 811 additional subnational locations from 1950 to 2021, with a particular emphasis on changes in mortality and life expectancy that occurred during the 2020–21 COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods: 22 223 data sources from vital registration, sample registration, surveys, censuses, and other sources were used to estimate mortality, with a subset of these sources used exclusively to estimate excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2026 data sources were used for population estimation. Additional sources were used to estimate migration; the effects of the HIV epidemic; and demographic discontinuities due to conflicts, famines, natural disasters, and pandemics, which are used as inputs for estimating mortality and population. Spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression (ST-GPR) was used to generate under-5 mortality rates, which synthesised 30 763 location-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 1365 surveys and censuses, and 80 other sources. ST-GPR was also used to estimate adult mortality (between ages 15 and 59 years) based on information from 31 642 location-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 355 surveys and censuses, and 24 other sources. Estimates of child and adult mortality rates were then used to generate life tables with a relational model life table system. For countries with large HIV epidemics, life tables were adjusted using independent estimates of HIV-specific mortality generated via an epidemiological analysis of HIV prevalence surveys, antenatal clinic serosurveillance, and other data sources. Excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 was determined by subtracting observed all-cause mortality (adjusted for late registration and mortality anomalies) from the mortality expected in the absence of the pandemic. Expected mortality was calculated based on historical trends using an ensemble of models. In location-years where all-cause mortality data were unavailable, we estimated excess mortality rates using a regression model with covariates pertaining to the pandemic. Population size was computed using a Bayesian hierarchical cohort component model. Life expectancy was calculated using age-specific mortality rates and standard demographic methods. Uncertainty intervals (UIs) were calculated for every metric using the 25th and 975th ordered values from a 1000-draw posterior distribution. Findings: Global all-cause mortality followed two distinct patterns over the study period: age-standardised mortality rates declined between 1950 and 2019 (a 62·8% [95% UI 60·5–65·1] decline), and increased during the COVID-19 pandemic period (2020–21; 5·1% [0·9–9·6] increase). In contrast with the overall reverse in mortality trends during the pandemic period, child mortality continued to decline, with 4·66 million (3·98–5·50) global deaths in children younger than 5 years in 2021 compared with 5·21 million (4·50–6·01) in 2019. An estimated 131 million (126–137) people died globally from all causes in 2020 and 2021 combined, of which 15·9 million (14·7–17·2) were due to the COVID-19 pandemic (measured by excess mortality, which includes deaths directly due to SARS-CoV-2 infection and those indirectly due to other social, economic, or behavioural changes associated with the pandemic). Excess mortality rates exceeded 150 deaths per 100 000 population during at least one year of the pandemic in 80 countries and territories, whereas 20 nations had a negative excess mortality rate in 2020 or 2021, indicating that all-cause mortality in these countries was lower during the pandemic than expected based on historical trends. Between 1950 and 2021, global life expectancy at birth increased by 22·7 years (20·8–24·8), from 49·0 years (46·7–51·3) to 71·7 years (70·9–72·5). Global life expectancy at birth declined by 1·6 years (1·0–2·2) between 2019 and 2021, reversing historical trends. An increase in life expectancy was only observed in 32 (15·7%) of 204 countries and territories between 2019 and 2021. The global population reached 7·89 billion (7·67–8·13) people in 2021, by which time 56 of 204 countries and territories had peaked and subsequently populations have declined. The largest proportion of population growth between 2020 and 2021 was in sub-Saharan Africa (39·5% [28·4–52·7]) and south Asia (26·3% [9·0–44·7]). From 2000 to 2021, the ratio of the population aged 65 years and older to the population aged younger than 15 years increased in 188 (92·2%) of 204 nations. Interpretation: Global adult mortality rates markedly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, reversing past decreasing trends, while child mortality rates continued to decline, albeit more slowly than in earlier years. Although COVID-19 had a substantial impact on many demographic indicators during the first 2 years of the pandemic, overall global health progress over the 72 years evaluated has been profound, with considerable improvements in mortality and life expectancy. Additionally, we observed a deceleration of global population growth since 2017, despite steady or increasing growth in lower-income countries, combined with a continued global shift of population age structures towards older ages. These demographic changes will likely present future challenges to health systems, economies, and societies. The comprehensive demographic estimates reported here will enable researchers, policy makers, health practitioners, and other key stakeholders to better understand and address the profound changes that have occurred in the global health landscape following the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and longer-term trends beyond the pandemic

    Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial

    Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.     Diversity of birds in Tranum Forest Reserve, Pahang

    A total of 830 observations of birds were recorded at Fraser's Hill belonging to 111 species. The most dominant species observed during the survey was Pycnonotus melanicterus. The insectivore feeding guild has the highest diversity (H'= 2.68) compared to the frugivores feeding guild (H' = 1.79). The density estimates for the total number of birds detected at Fraser's Hill was considered relatively high with 193,950 individuals (71.8 individuals per ha). The location of this forest that extended to Fraser's Hill may influence the species diversity in the area and it is expected to have more species recorded

    Cost-benefit analysis on the development of Belum-Temenggor Ecological Corridor in Gerik, Perak

    The Central Forest Spine (CFS) project has the mission to protect the nation's biodiversity by connecting CFS complex key to making it a vast area of forests stretching from north to south and East to the West of Peninsular Malaysia which involves the creation of 37 ecological corridors in Peninsular Malaysia. The CFS is estimated to cover a total area of 5.3 million hectares or 40% of Peninsular Malaysia's land area, of which 80% is Permanent Reserved Forest. To initiate the CFS Programme, the government has selected Primary Linkage 2 (PL2) Belum-Temengor Ecological Corridor (BTEC), Gerik, Perak as the first CFS project in Peninsular Malaysia. An initial allocation of RM 60 million was approved in April 2011 for the implementation of this project over the period 2012-2015. This study includes the evaluation of goods and services of forest resources as well as the intangible values of forests in ecological corridors CFS in Hulu Perak, the effects of the cost will be accepted by the state government in the event of the destruction of the environment, natural disasters and economic activities downstream as a result of not maintaining the ecological corridors and to analyse in terms of finance and economics in order to see the importance of the area to either maintain as preservation or developed for the commercial projects, and getting the net present value (NPV) in order to see the importance of land use for the project is needed to make this study successful. The objectives of the study are: (i) to analyse the information obtained by using scientific and econometrics methods to get the net present value (NPV), incremental net present value (INPV); (ii) to make a summary and an assessment of the study area based on the result analysis and the BTEC is already a popular tourism destination. Even without the Ecological Corridor project, the BTEC is already providing a benefit stream of RM21,562,311 per year. Eco-tourism and recreational services provided 7.9%, while the avoidance of human-wildlife conflicts and local communities dependence on NTFPs collection contributed another 2.5% and 2.4% respectively. The local businesses from tourism provided 87.3% of the total annual contributions of economic values. Non-use values of biodiversity conservation contributed 17.9%. The above benefits reported earlier are not realised now only but far into the future and these benefits could be accumulated by discounting the future values into the current period and summing them up to obtain the NPVWoP. Using a discounting rate of 5% and analysing a cash flow over 10 years, the NPVWoP of current status quo situation is MYR 294,975,034. The cost and benefit analysis showed that if the Forestry Department is capable of generating incomes through obtaining international interests to set carbon offset projects or through the REDD PLUS initiatives, the ecological corridor project is viable. The Forestry Department would have to seek international interests to obtain the carbon offset projects and REDD Plus to compensate for the cost of implementing conservation efforts undertaken
