    Exploring the Relationship Between Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities and Violent and Property Crime: A Socioeconomic Contingent Relationship

    Siting of drug and alcohol treatment facilities is often met with negative reactions because of the assumption that these facilities increase crime by attracting drug users (and possibly dealers) to an area. This assumption, however, rests on weak empirical footings that have not been subjected to strong empirical analyses. Using census block groups from Philadelphia, PA, it was found that the criminogenic impact of treatment facilities in and near a neighborhood on its violent and property crime rates may be contingent on the socioeconomic status (SES) of the neighborhood. Paying attention to both the density and proximity of facilities in and around neighborhoods, results showed that the criminogenic impact of treatment facilities depended largely on neighborhood SES. Under some conditions, more treatment facilities nearby were associated with lower crime. Reasons, why the presumed criminogenic impact of treatment facilities appears only under some conditions, were suggested

    The primary goal of the current study is to examine a portion of Klinger’s theory. Specifically, we test the influence of organizational and environmental contextual factors, guided by Klinger’s theory, on one measure of officer vigor. To date, few studies have taken this approach to examine Klinger’s theory. The study builds on prior research that has tested aspects of Klinger’s theory and adds new analytic strategies that prior studies have not used. The results of this study have implications for both theory and practice, and they add to the growing literature examining the influence of ecological and organization factors on police behavior

    Military Service and Offending Behaviors of Emerging Adults: A Conceptual Review

    Focusing on the United States, this paper examines the impact of military service for the cohort of individuals that have experienced the social factors that characterize emerging adulthood as a unique stage in the life course. We argue that military service, as a turning point, may act differently in contemporary times compared to findings from past research. This difference is driven by changes in military service, the draft versus volunteer military service, and the prevalence of emerging adulthood. As a background, we describe emerging adulthood, examine how emerging adulthood relates to crime and deviance, explore the impact of military life on young adults, provide an overview of the demographics of military service, discuss the influence and outcomes of military life on young adults, and explore existing research linking military service and deviant and criminal behavior. We develop a theoretical model of the relationship between military service and emerging adulthood and explore the impact on criminological theory and policy

    Is Emerging Adulthood Influencing Moffitt’s Developmental Taxonomy? Adding the “Prolonged” Adolescent Offender

    The study of offender trajectories has been a prolific area of criminological research. However, few studies have incorporated the influence of emerging adulthood, a recently identified stage of the life course, on offending trajectories. The present study addressed this shortcoming by introducing the prolonged adolescent offender, a low-level offender between the ages of 18 and 25 that has failed to successfully transition into adult social roles. A theoretical background based on prior research in life-course criminology and emerging adulthood is presented. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health analyses examined the relationship between indicators of traditional turning points and social bonds and low-level criminal offending and drug use. Several indicators including education, economic instability, and parental attachment were all predictive of offending and drug use

However, there have been few empirical studies exploring social bonds and turning points and offending for those who have experienced emerging adulthood, a recently identified stage of the life course. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health we examined if indicators of social bonds and turning points were predictors of criminal offending. Several of the turning points and social bonds included in these analyses were found to influence decreases in criminal offending for a cohort of emerging adults. We extend previous research by examining the influence of social bonds and turning points on patterns of criminal offending during emerging adulthood

    Clinical and molecular analysis of synchronous double lung cancers

    Background: Since multiple lung cancer treatment strategies differ, it is essential for clinicians to be able to distinguish between separate primary lesions and metastasis. In the present study, we used array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) and somatic mutation (epidermal growth factor receptor: EGFR) to analyze genomic alteration profiles in lung cancer patients. To validate the consistency among the pathological assessments and clarify the clinical differences between double primary lesions and metastasis, we also examined synchronous double lung cancer clinical data. Methods: Between January 1970 and March 2010, 2215 patients with lung cancer underwent surgical resection at Nagasaki University Hospital. We performed molecular analysis of 12 synchronous double lung cancer patients without lymph node metastasis (intrapulmonary metastasis in the same lobe (pm1): n = 6, primary: n = 6). We then evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients with pathologically diagnosed synchronous double lung cancers (intrapulmonary metastasis (pm): n = 80, primary: n = 39) and other T3 tumors (n = 230). Results: Examination of the concordance rate (CR) of the copy number changes (CNCs) for paired tumors showed that the metastasis group was larger than the primary group (55.5% vs. 19.6%, p = 0.04). Pathological diagnosis and molecular classification were the same in 10 out of 12 cases (83%). As compared to the primary group, there tended to be an inferior 5-year survival curve for the pm group. However, in N0 patients, the survival curve for the pm group overlapped the primary group, while the survival rate of the pm1 group was much higher than that of other T3 group (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Both pathological and molecular assessment using aCGH adapted in the current study appeared to have a consistency. Pathological pm1(T3)N0 patients may have a better prognosis than other T3N0 patients

    IgG4-Related Sclerosing Disease, an Emerging Entity: A Review of a Multi-System Disease

    Immunoglobulin G4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD) is a recently defined emerging entity characterized by a diffuse or mass forming inflammatory reaction rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells associated with fibrosclerosis and obliterative phlebitis. IgG4-RSD usually affects middle aged and elderly patients, with a male predominance. It is associated with an elevated serum titer of IgG4, which acts as a marker for this recently characterized entity. The prototype is IgG4-related sclerosing pancreatitis or autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). Other common sites of involvement are the hepatobiliary tract, salivary gland, orbit, and lymph node, however practically any organ can be involved, including upper aerodigestive tract, lung, aorta, mediastinum, retroperitoneum, soft tissue, skin, central nervous system, breast, kidney, and prostate. Fever or constitutional symptoms usually do not comprise part of the clinical picture. Laboratory findings detected include raised serum globulin, IgG and IgG4. An association with autoantibody detection (such as antinuclear antibodies and rheumatoid factor) is seen in some cases. Steroid therapy comprises the mainstay of treatment. Disease progression with involvement of multiple organ-sites may be encountered in a subset of cases and may follow a relapsing-remitting course. The principal histopathologic findings in several extranodal sites include lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, lymphoid follicle formation, sclerosis and obliterative phlebitis, along with atrophy and destruction of tissues. Immunohistochemical staining shows increased IgG4+ cells in the involved tissues (>50 per high-power field, with IgG4/IgG ratio >40%). IgG4-RSD may potentially be rarely associated with the development of lymphoma and carcinoma. However, the nature and pathogenesis of IgG4-RSD are yet to be fully elucidated and provide immense scope for further studies
