Instability driven formation of domains in the intermediate state of type-I superconductors

The formation of normal-state domains in type-I superconducting indium films is investigated using the high resolution magneto-optical imaging technique. The observed patterns consist of coexisting circular and lamellar normal-phase domains surrounded by the superconducting phase. The distribution of domain surface areas is found to exhibit a threshold, above which only the lamellar shape is observed. We show that this threshold coincides with the predicted critical surface area for the elongation instability of the circular shape. The partition of the normal phase into circular and lamellar domains is determined by the combined effects of the elongation instability and the penetration of magnetic flux by bursts at the early stage of pattern formation. It is not governed by mutual interactions between domains, as usually assumed for self-organized systems

Beta Irradiation of a Geometrically Metastable Superconducting Strip Detector with a Magnetic Flux Penetration Read-Out

Geometrical metastability, observed in superconducting type I tin flat strips, has been previously proposed as a principle for particle detection. The energy deposition of an incoming beta-particle induces the rupture of the metastability and consequently the penetration of multiquantum flux tubes into a superconducting tin strip. The Influence of Culture, Religion, and Parenting Styles On Reproductive Health Education Access For Adolescents Living in The Caribbean Islands.

Background: One of the highest contributors to maternal and child mortality is teen pregnancy. Increased attention on sexual and reproductive health for adolescents is beneficial because this stage of development covers social, physiological, and cognitive changes that implicate their well-being not only in the moment but for the rest of their lives. This focus and acknowledgement on reproductive health education will not only benefit adolescents but will help to reinforce health, gender equality, and empowerment of young women worldwide. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify different factors that play significant roles on reproductive health education access among adolescents living in the Caribbean Islands and to identify culturally appropriate prevention interventions tailored to meet the specific needs of adolescents from these specific regions. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted. A total of 17 relevant articles were evaluated. Findings/Results: Many factors such as religion, culture, and parenting styles have shown to influence reproductive health education access for adolescents living in the Caribbean Islands. Many parents lack education to provide reproductive health education to their adolescents, if they are educated on such topic, some are reluctant to bring up such topic to their adolescents. A common attribute is religious practice. The two primary practices that influence parent-child relationship are Church of God and Pentecostal Christian Church. They believe they are saved and their bodies are vessels of the Holy Ghost which prohibits sexual activities. Many other religions disapprove the use of condom which make adolescents more susceptible to STIs and pregnancy. Lastly, cultural myths such as; if one contracts an STI, one can get rid of it by being sexually involved with a virgin. Also many boys are expected to have sex with multiple partners to show their masculinity in the Jamaican culture. Contrary, girls should stay pure until marriage. Prevention programs such as parent-children workshop and Young Focus Group have been shown to bring awareness and coaching activities to strengthen parenting skills and relationships. Results showed a significant delay in sexual progression behaviors in adolescents by improving STIs knowledge and proper the use of condom. Conclusion: Based on these findings, there is great need for sexual reproductive health education and interventions programs in the Caribbean due to increased threats of STIs on adolescents and early teen pregnancy. This is a universal issue because of the increasing number of immigrants from all over the world to the U.S. That poses new challenges to healthcare providers in negotiating potential cultural influences on adolescent risk behaviors such as substance abuse and sexual risk-taking. Given the different influencing factors identified in this review, culturally sensitive programs must be part of nursing education to be able to influence adolescent health

Psychosocial Consequences of Parental Wrongful Conviction on Children

This qualitative multiple-case study sought to provide an in-depth understanding of how children living in broken families-due to the wrongful conviction of parent(s)-developed psychosocial issues. The theoretical frameworks applied to this study were the social learning theory, the social control theory, the role-modeling theory, and the general theory of crime. A purposeful sample of 13 adults who were children at the time of their parents’ wrongful incarceration were drawn for phone and in-person interviews. The data were transcribed and analyzed to code, sort, and organize; to analyze connections in the information, and to compare and contrast cases. The multiple-case study data were analyzed using 1st and 2nd cycle coding. Among the 10 themes identified in this study were these 5: family structure and activities, behavioral issues associated with the wrongful conviction of their parents, wrongful conviction effects on education, mental health impacts of a parental wrongful conviction on left-behind children and bullying in school and at home. This implications for positive social change are that the findings raise awareness of the psychosocial issues experienced by children whose parent(s) were wrongfully imprisoned for government officials, community leaders, policymakers, and justice reform advocates who can use them to implement programs to provide psychosocial assistance to all children of incarcerated parents

Pinning dependent field driven domain wall dynamics and thermal scaling in an ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt magnetic film

Magnetic field-driven domain wall motion in an ultrathin Pt/Co(0.45nm)/Pt ferromagnetic film with perpendicular anisotropy is studied over a wide temperature range. Three different pinning dependent dynamical regimes are clearly identified: the creep, the thermally assisted flux flow and the depinning, as well as their corresponding crossovers. The wall elastic energy and microscopic parameters characterizing the pinning are determined. Both the extracted thermal rounding exponent at the depinning transition, $\psi=$0.15, and the Larkin length crossover exponent, $\phi=$0.24, fit well with the numerical predictions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
