    A closer look at chaotic advection in the stratosphere: part II: statistical diagnostics

    Statistical diagnostics of mixing and transport are computed for a numerical model of forced shallow-water flow on the sphere and a middle-atmosphere general circulation model. In particular, particle dispersion statistics, transport fluxes, Liapunov exponents (probability density functions and ensemble averages), and tracer concentration statistics are considered. It is shown that the behavior of the diagnostics is in accord with that of kinematic chaotic advection models so long as stochasticity is sufficiently weak.     Chiang Kai-shek’s “secret deal” at Xian and the start of the Sino-Japanese War

    Using newly available archives, particularly the diary and the presidential papers of Chiang Kai-shek, this article challenges the conventional interpretations of the Xian Incident (1936), in particular the widely held belief that the kidnapping of China’s leader Chiang by two rebellious generals forced him to form a united front with the Communist Party to confront Japanese aggression, and of the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War 7 months later. It puts forth the interpretation that full-scale war between China and Japan was started not by Japan but by Chiang after a Japanese provocation, and the united front was only formed after Chiang ordered his best army units to attack Japanese forces in Shanghai in August 1937 turning it into the largest land battle after the First World War. It must be noted, however, that Japan acted provocatively and aggressively in a local incident outside Beijing a month earlier. Chiang decided on war not because he reached an agreement with the Chinese Communists to form a united front whilst a captive in Xian but because in Xian he received a signal from Josef Stalin that the Soviet Union would support him in a war with Japan. Chiang read Stalin right and the Soviet Union became the largest supplier of weapons to China in the first 4 years of China’s 8-year war with Japan. The hitherto unknown or “secret deal” Chiang made in Xian was an implicit one with Stalin, not with the Chinese Communist Party or its man on the spot Zhou Enlai

The definitive version was published in Chemical Geology 253 (2008): 102-113, doi:10.1016/j.chemgeo.2008.04.017.We have developed a technique for the accurate and precise determination of 34S/32S isotope ratios (ÎŽ34S) in sulfur-bearing minerals using solution and laser ablation multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). We have examined and determined rigorous corrections for analytical difficulties such as instrumental mass bias, unresolved isobaric interferences, blanks, and laser ablation- and matrix-induced isotopic fractionation. Use of high resolution sector-field mass spectrometry removes major isobaric interferences from O2+. Standard–sample bracketing is used to correct for the instrumental mass bias of unknown samples. Blanks on sulfur masses arising from memory effects and residual oxygen-tailing are typically minor (< 0.2‰, within analytical error), and are mathematically removed by on-peak zero subtraction and by bracketing of samples with standards determined at the same signal intensity (within 20%). Matrix effects are significant (up to 0.7‰) for matrix compositions relevant to many natural sulfur-bearing minerals. For solution analysis, sulfur isotope compositions are best determined using purified (matrix-clean) sulfur standards and sample solutions using the chemical purification protocol we present. For in situ analysis, where the complex matrix cannot be removed prior to analysis, appropriately matrix-matching standards and samples removes matrix artifacts and yields sulfur isotope ratios consistent with conventional techniques using matrix-clean analytes. Our method enables solid samples to be calibrated against aqueous standards; a consideration that is important when certified, isotopically-homogeneous and appropriately matrix-matched solid standards do not exist. Further, bulk and in situ analyses can be performed interchangeably in a single analytical session because the instrumental setup is identical for both. We validated the robustness of our analytical method through multiple isotope analyses of a range of reference materials and have compared these with isotope ratios determined using independent techniques. Long-term reproducibility of S isotope compositions is typically 0.20‰ and 0.45‰ (2σ) for solution and laser analysis, respectively. Our method affords the opportunity to make accurate and relatively precise S isotope measurement for a wide range of sulfur-bearing materials, and is particularly appropriate for geologic samples with complex matrix and for which high-resolution in situ analysis is critical.Support was provided by National Science Foundations grants OCE-0327448 to P.R.C. and W.B. and OCE-0622982 to O.J.R.     Rates and controls of the air-sea flux of bromoform (CHBr3): a review and synthesis

    Bromoform (CHBr3) is the largest single source of atmospheric organic bromine and therefore of importance as a source of reactive halogens to the troposphere and lower stratosphere. The sea-to-air flux, originating with macroalgal and planktonic sources, is the main source for atmospheric bromoform. We review bromoform's contribution to atmospheric chemistry, its atmospheric and oceanic distributions and its oceanic sources and sinks. We have reassessed oceanic emissions, based on published aqueous and airborne concentration data, global climatological parameters, and information concerning coastal and biogenic sources. The goals are to attempt an estimate of the global source strength and partly to identify key regions that require further investigation. The sea-to-air flux is spatially and temporally variable with tropical, subtropical and shelf waters identified as potentially important source regions. We obtain an annual global flux of bromoform of ∌10 Gmol Br yr−1 (3–22 Gmol Br yr−1). This estimate is associated with significant uncertainty, arising from data precision and coverage, choice of air-sea exchange parameterizations and model assumptions. Anthropogenic sources of ∌0.3 (to 1.1) Gmol Br yr−1 (as CHBr3) can be locally significant, but are globally negligible. Our estimate of the global oceanic source is three to four times higher than recent estimates based on the modeling of atmospheric sinks. The reasons for this discrepancy could lie with the limited regional and temporal data available and the broad assumptions that underlie our flux calculations. Alternatively, atmospheric sink calculations, often made on the basis of background CHBr3 levels, may neglect the influence of strong but highly localized sources (e.g., from some coastal and shelf regions). The strongly variable and poorly characterized source of CHBr3, together with its short atmospheric lifetime, complicates model-based estimation of the distribution of reactive Br resulting from its atmospheric degradation. An integrated program of marine and atmospheric observations, atmospheric modeling and mechanistic studies of oceanic bromoform production is required to better constrain present and future Br delivery to the atmosphere

    Governance characteristics and role effectiveness of audit committees

    How do the collective qualities of independence, competence and diligence of Audit Committee (AC) members impact on the effectiveness of ACs in performing their roles? Two primary roles of an Additionally, this literature has developed proxy measures for the effectiveness of ACs in fulfilling their key roles of an AC are assessed in this study. They are the roles of vetting the integrity of external annual financial statements (using the incidence and severity of financial restatements as an effectiveness measure) and monitoring external auditor independence (using a non-audit to audit service fees as the effectiveness measure). Previous studies have not drawn these AC charcteristics together in a comprehensive model as done in this study. Using secondary data from Australian listed companies over the years 2004 to 2009, the results reveal that stronger AC independence and competence, but not diligence, is significantly related to a lower incidence and severity of financial restatements (i.e. to a lower integrity of financial statements). However, greater AC diligence, but not independence or competence, is significantly related to lower non-audit fee ratio (i.e., to higher external auditor independence). Consideration is given to implications of the results for the composition and functioning of ACs
