    Implications of a W^+W^- (ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar$ Interaction for e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and for t -> cW^+W^-, cZZ in a Two Higgs Doublet Model

    The Standard Model with one extra Higgs doublet may give rise to enhanced TREE-LEVEL flavor-changing-scalar coupling of a neutral Higgs to a pair of top-charm quarks. This coupling may drive a large TREE-LEVEL effective W^+W^-(ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar interaction. As a result we find that the reactions e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and the two rare top decays t -> cW^+W^-, t -> cZZ become very sensitive probes of such an effective interaction. The most promising ones, e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, may yield several hundreds and up to thousands of such events at the Next Linear Collider with a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=0.5 - 2 TeV if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs is a few hundred GeV. The rare decays t -> cW^+W^- and t -> cZZ may be accessible at the LHC if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs lies in the narrow window 150 GeV < m_h < 200 GeV.Comment: 18 pages, plain latex, 12 figures embadded in the text using epsfi

    Mitigating avian collision with power lines: a proof of concept for installation of line markers via unmanned aerial vehicle

    Abstract: Avian collisions with overhead power lines are a global conservation concern. Collisions are mitigated primarily through marking power lines to increase the visibility of lines. Line marking is typically accomplished via an expensive and potentially dangerous process of hovering a helicopter within 1 m of a wire and installing line markers by hand. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) may offer a less dangerous, less costly alternative that is also less disturbing to wildlife. Herein we describe equipping a commercially available UAV with an installation arm designed in collaboration with the Colorado State University Department of Mechanical Engineering to install line markers on a power line. The UAV installed line markers within a 30 cm target window on a model power line. The proof of concept described here demonstrates the potential utility of UAVs in mitigating avian collision with overhead power lines.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Recent Successes and Future Directions in Immunotherapy of Cutaneous Melanoma

    The global health burden associated with melanoma continues to increase while treatment options for metastatic melanoma are limited. Nevertheless, in the past decade, the field of cancer immunotherapy has witnessed remarkable advances for the treatment of a number of malignancies including metastatic melanoma. Although the earliest observations of an immunological antitumor response were made nearly a century ago, it was only in the past 30 years, that immunotherapy emerged as a viable therapeutic option, in particular for cutaneous melanoma. As such, melanoma remains the focus of various preclinical and clinical studies to understand the immunobiology of cancer and to test various tumor immunotherapies. Here, we review key recent developments in the field of immune-mediated therapy of melanoma. Our primary focus is on therapies that have received regulatory approval. Thus, a brief overview of the pathophysiology of melanoma is provided. The purported functions of various tumor-infiltrating immune cell subsets are described, in particular the recently described roles of intratumoral dendritic cells. The section on immunotherapies focuses on strategies that have proved to be the most clinically successful such as immune checkpoint blockade. Prospects for novel therapeutics and the potential for combinatorial approaches are delineated. Finally, we briefly discuss nanotechnology-based platforms which can in theory, activate multiple arms of immune system to fight cancer. The promising advances in the field of immunotherapy signal the dawn of a new era in cancer treatment and warrant further investigation to understand the opportunities and barriers for future progress
