Universities and research centers in Spain are subject to a national open access (OA) mandate and to their own OA institutional policies, if any, but compliance with these requirements has not been fully monitored yet. We studied the degree of OA archiving of publications of 28 universities within the period 2012-2014. Of these, 12 have an institutional OA mandate, 9 do not require but request or encourage OA of scholarly outputs, and 7 do not have a formal OA statement but are well known for their support of the OA movement. The potential OA rate was calculated according to the publisher open access policies indicated in Sherpa/Romeo directory. The universities showed an asymmetric distribution of 1% to 63% of articles archived in repositories that matched those indexed by the Web of Science in the same period, of which 1% to 35% were OA and the rest were closed access. For articles on work carried out with public funding and subject to the Spanish Science law, the percentage was similar or slightly higher. However, the analysis of potential OA showed that the figure could have reached 80% in some cases. This means that the real proportion of articles in OA is far below what it could potentially be

Mediating Effects of Social Support in the Association Between Problems in Childhood and Adolescence and Well‑Being in Adult Domestic Adoptees

Research concerning adulthood and adoption has gained popularity in recent years, but there are very few studies involving positive variables of adjustment. Adopted people are believed to have more behavioral and emotional problems in childhood than the general population. Previous research suggests overall continuity of functioning in later life. However, certain variables might change that continuity. Through Structural Equation Modeling analyses, this paper assesses the mediating role of social support in the well-being of 70 adult adoptees. Findings showed a well-fitted model, where problems in adolescence had a direct effect on well-being in adulthood. Additionally, we found two mediating effects: (a) social support mediated the relationship between problems in adolescence and well-being later in life; and (b) problems in adolescence mediated the relationship between problems in childhood and well-being. The main implication of these results is that social support helps develop good levels of adjustment and well-being in adulthood. Taking all this into account, it is important for adoption professionals to encourage families to support their children and to provide additional support for those adoptees needing it

Communication of flagship species in conservation: lessons from invasive management projects

    Get PDF
With the increase of public awareness and involvement in conservational projects, flagship species have become a common tool to appeal to people's motivations. Yet, the effectiveness of these species depends on a proper communication of their conservational importance. Using two projects aiming to control the invasive species American mink, I illustrate how communication can positively or negatively impact on succeeding at involving the public; and consequently on the projects. The Scottish mink initiative project managed to increase the number of volunteers involved by selecting flagship species and their communication adapted to the public needs. Meanwhile, in the Spanish project, while no volunteers are yet involved, there has been an increase of public awareness via using the European mink as native flagship species. However, as its nativeness reaming unconfirmed I suggest there is a high risk of potential miss-communication with the public that can negatively impact on their perception

Following the recent and vivid dialogue around the relevant role of the media in the Spanish transition to democracy, this article studies the first representations of homosexual characters in the democratic cinema, focusing on the importance of the question of education, of great significance for the LGTB activism of the time. It refers to different theoretical sources, including significant works of queer and gender theorists and archival material of the gay activism of the late Francoism. It studies how the first activism aimed to prove wrong old myths around homosexuality and to convince the new democratic society of the importance of the acceptance of sexual diversity, and how the so-called strategy of the «Trojan horse» was used in order to introduce, making use of the media, educational messages. The film Los placeres ocultos is taken as a case study to examine the legacy of the connection between education and LGTB liberation in cinema; the analysis is helpful to explore the difficulties of the use of film narratives with educational intentions, as well as to understand the first steps in the creation of innovative discourses of little tradition in Spanish culture

Are workplaces with many women in management run differently?

Are workplaces with a high percentage of women in management run differently?. This paper uses data from the British 1998 Workplace Employee Relations Survey (WERS98) to analyze empirically the relationship between the percentage of female workplace managers and people-management practices. The results show that workplace management teams with a higher proportion of women monitor employee feedback and development more intensely. Such teams also tend to promote more interpersonal channels of communication and more employee participation in decision-making, although the evidence is weaker for these last two practices. Overall, the findings suggest that the concept of good workplace management practices converges on female leadership styles when the percentage of female managers increasesPublicad

Evaluation of Spanish institutional repositories based on criteria related to technology, procedures, content, marketing and personnel

Purpose: To provide, through a set of indicators, an overview of the way in which Spanish institutional repositories are run and the services they offer their respective institutions and other users. The selected descriptors are based on aspects related to technology, procedures, content, marketing and the personnel responsible for managing repositories. Design, methodology and approach: In order to establish the indicators, a thorough review of the literature was carried out to identify existing indicators that are used to assess repositories. These were divided into five categories (technology, procedures, content, marketing and personnel) with a total of 48 components. An online survey was conducted with the repositories managers of 66 Spanish research institutions in order to verify the degree of fulfilment of the selected indicators. Findings: The survey received forty-six responses, which represented a response rate of 69%. Of these, 44 came from universities and two from research centres. Sixty-five per cent of the repositories have the capacity to import data from and export data to other university systems, mainly CRIS (32%). Most repositories have mechanisms for the large-scale import and export of metadata and digital objects (83%). The use of altmetrics in repositories is widespread (44%). Authors and librarians deposit most frequently (37% and 32%, respectively), in spite of the fact that 44% do not have full-time staff working in the repository. In more than 80% of the repositories, between 90% and 100% of the deposits are full-text documents. With respect to the tools used to promote the repository within the institution, these are primarily face-to-face training sessions (82%), followed by support materials such as manuals and help pages (65%). The academic authorities encourage open access among researchers in 56% of cases, a significant element in repository marketing. Originality and value: This work proposes a model based on five dimensions and 48 indicators to assess institutional repositories. This approach has been applied to Spanish institutional repositories to provide up-to-date information about their management procedures and promotional methods and the services they offer authors and the university community. This overview of Spanish repositories has provided an insight into the way in which repositories have evolved in recent years and allowed potential improvements to be identified based on the most advanced repositories. This model can also be exported to assess institutional repositories in other countries

Intraspinal Microstimulation for Motor Rehabilitation Modulates Neural Transmission In Spinal Pain Pathways

    Get PDF
Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in dramatic changes in neural excitability below the lesion, leading to debilitating motor impairments, dysregulation of reflexes, and neuropathic pain. Voluntary motor output is reduced below the lesion, whereas the spinal effects of sensory feedback become pathologically increased, contributing to hyperreflexia and neuropathic pain. Therapies seeking to restore sensorimotor function after SCI face a dual challenge: increasing spinal motor output in response to descending motor commands while decreasing the spinal responses to sensory feedback that contribute to hyperreflexia and pain. We characterized whether electrical intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) of the ventral horn, which increases spinal motor output, concurrently modulates transmission in spinal pain pathways of the dorsal horn. After T13-L2 laminectomy in adult Sprague-Dawley rats, electrode arrays were implanted at the L5 dorsal root entry zone. Electrodes locations for ventral ISMS targeted Laminae 8-9 and electrode locations for quantifying transmission in nociceptive pathways targeted Laminae 1-3 of the dorsal horn. Prior to and after ISMS, we mechanically stimulated the peripheral receptive field by applying controlled forces of varying magnitude. We classified pain and non-pain-related spinal neurons in the superficial dorsal horn based on their responses to these mechanical stimuli. We found that even short periods of ventral ISMS could modulate transmission in spinal pain pathways, with some effects persisting after ISMS was discontinued. These results could not be explained by direct current spread, and thus reflect transynaptic activation of superficial dorsal horn neurons potentially leading to induction of neural plasticity. Our results demonstrate that neuroprosthetic therapies intending to use ventral ISMS only to increase spinal motor output in actuality modulate transmission throughout a wide and functionally diverse set of spinal neurons. Future work is required to systematically characterize these off-target effects, optimizing beneficial changes while mitigating unintended activity that could lead to hyperreflexia or pain
