Temporary in Tennessee: CATS for Stable Jobs

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] Morristown is a mid-sized town in the mountains of upper east Tennessee. Like the rest of Tennessee, Morristown has a low rate of unionization and has seen minimal organizing on workplace and fair labor issues. At the same time, Tennessee has been hard hit by plant closings and layoffs and has seen higher paying industrial jobs replaced by lower paying, part-time and service jobs and temporary and contract-labor jobs. The security of the workforce is declining dramatically. From this setting, a citizens group called Citizens Against Temporary Services, or CATS, organized last year in search of a better deal for workers in Tennessee. In little more than a year, CATS has made remarkable strides. This is the CATS story

Eden is a show based around the concept of love. Love can be clean, messy, warm, cold, good, bad,it can be conditional or unrequited. Love is enigmatic— no one understands or experiences it exactly the same. I wanted to find a way to capture a part of this thing that I crave, something that is so close and yet so far out of reach. This exhibition is my way of giving to others my conception of Love in my own way. Eden is a garden occupied by the two lovers, a cyclops and a blind prince. In secret, the two lovers meet in this garden of Eden, have tea, and read. Although their love has been forbidden, they are here at this moment, and as a participant in the space, you have been given an opportunity to share in that.. In this show, you will see cut vinyl and paper come together to create an immersive environment for you as the viewer to step into and be a part of. Having this space allows me to bring you into my world and showcase my interest in creating a narrative environment.. The use of illustrator and photoshop along with the meticulous process of plotting and weeding, allowed me to create these vignettes, showing you what it is like to be a part of this world. Atop pedestals, there are a set of five zines, three of which tell you the story of these lovers together, and one for each lover by themselves. Each have been hand stitched and carefully displayed for you to peruse. The inspiration for Eden comes from many places; one example beingLouise Fili. Inspired by her gorgeous typography and limited color palettes, she is what inspired me to first make a handwritten title. Something one of a kind, just like my other two inspirations. Luba Lukova and Kacey Slone. Inspired by her use of negative space, Luba Lukova stands as a perfect example for the technical concepts in the work on display; The use of line, color, and space and how it interacts with the world. Kacey dives fearlessly and deeply into some of the emotional development and expression I am also hoping to convey.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art498/1111/thumbnail.jp

Differences in Disability among Older Women and Men in Egypt and Tunisia

[Excerpt] Research on child survival and health has indicated disparities between boys and girls in selected Middle Eastern countries. Health disparities in later life are understudied in this region. In this article, we examine differences between women and men in later-life activity limitation in Egypt and Tunisia. Difficulty executing physical tasks is more common for women than for men in both study sites, although differences are smaller after adjustment for underlying illness. Differences in the difficulty of executing physical tasks also are sensitive to environmental controls in variable ways across the study sites. The findings caution against the sole use of reported disability in comparative studies of gender and agin

Correlation Between Tooth Root Translucency, Crystallinity, and DNA Preservation in Teeth for Unidentified Human Remains (UHR) Investigations

    Get PDF
Endogenous genetic material protected by the rigid, mineralized hard tissues of bones and teeth is often targeted for forensic DNA testing in missing persons and unidentified human remains (UHR) investigations. Although standard approaches have narrowed sample selection to a few optimal skeletal elements (i.e., weight-bearing long bones, teeth), subsampling and decisions beyond this can be challenging due to the non-uniform, heterogeneous pattern of postmortem diagenesis. One particular component of skeletal microstructure — the inorganic mineral matrix [hydroxyapatite (HAp), Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] — is purported to play a major role in DNA preservation. The potential correlation between molecular changes to skeletal microstructure and the quantity/quality of endogenous DNA is an important area of investigation to maximize success and potentially streamline decision making for testing. In casework, forensic odontologists commonly examine a feature called tooth root translucency (TRT) as an established method for estimating the chronological age of an unknown decedent. The ultimate aim of this study was to determine if TRT could be used as a reliable indicator of the viability of teeth for DNA testing. This research involved: 1) microscopic examination, measurement, and photo-documentation of TRT in intact and sectioned teeth (n=55) from human subjects of known chronological age; 2) X-ray diffraction (XRD) of pulverized tooth powder to assess the crystalline state of HAp in each tooth; and 3) DNA extraction from teeth (n=25) to assess the correlation between degree of TRT and quantity/quality of recovered DNA. This project successfully created a cost-effective strategy to measure TRT and preserve the physical integrity of tooth samples for downstream DNA testing. The microscopic model described herein could easily be employed in Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) tents and other fieldwork scenarios. The crystalline state of HAp was determined to have an insignificant influence on degree of TRT in human teeth. However, TRT was shown to directly correlate to DNA preservation in teeth. Samples with low degrees of TRT possessed higher quantity/quality DNA than those with higher degrees of TRT (p \u3c 0.05). Empirical data from this study could provide a framework to guide forensic odontologists in selecting skeletal samples to submit for forensic DNA testing

An Assessment of Terrestrial Decapoda Diversity Across Three Ecological Zones in Mida Creek, Kenya

Mangroves make up one of the most effective natural remedies at combating climate change today. They represent great commercial interest worldwide and yet, are being degraded at an unsustainable rate. If successful mangrove conservation plans are to be implemented for our posterity, mangrove ecosystems need to be better understood at the community level. Mangrove crabs make up the most diverse and populace mangrove inhabitants. They are classified as ecosystem engineers and their potential for being used as bioindicators makes them integral to assessing mangrove health. Yet, their diversity and distribution patterns are not well understood. The aim of this study was to survey general terrestrial Decapoda diversity and distribution patterns within a mangrove forest habitat. Surveys were carried out at Mida Creek, Kenya 3*19’27 S, 39*57’49 E. Quadrat sampling was utilized across three distinct levels of zonation driven by water access and expressed by mangrove species type. One-way Anova tests yielded significant results for crab density across all three zones as well as species richness between two zones suggesting zone specific crab distribution. No correlation was found between either mangrove density or canopy cover as they pertained to crab density. Knowing crabs are tied to specific zones while not being directly influenced by mangrove species suggests other biotic or abiotic factors are at play with determining species gradients
