    Symmetry breaking and unconventional charge ordering in single crystal Na2.7_{2.7}Ru4_4O9_9

    The interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in matter leads to various forms of ordered states through phase transitions. An important subclass of these phenomena of complex materials is charge ordering (CO), mainly driven by mixed-valence states. We discovered by combining the results of electrical resistivity (ρ\rho), specific heat, susceptibility χ\chi (\textit{T}), and single crystal x-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) that Na2.7_{2.7}Ru4_4O9_9 with the monoclinic tunnel type lattice (space group CC2/mm) exhibits an unconventional CO at room temperature while retaining metallicity. The temperature-dependent SC-XRD results show successive phase transitions with super-lattice reflections at \textbf{q}1_1=(0, 12\frac{1}{2}, 0) and \textbf{q}2_2=(0, 13\frac{1}{3}, 13\frac{1}{3}) below TC2T_{\textrm{C2}} (365 K) and only at \textbf{q}1_1=(0, 12\frac{1}{2}, 0) between TC2T_{\textrm{C2}} and TC1T_{\textrm{C1}} (630 K). We interpreted these as an evidence for the formation of an unconventional CO. It reveals a strong first-order phase transition in the electrical resistivity at TC2T_{\textrm{C2}} (cooling) = 345 K and TC2T_{\textrm{C2}} (heating) = 365 K. We argue that the origin of the phase transition is due to the localized 4dd Ru-electrons. The results of our finding reveal an unique example of Ru3+^{3+}/Ru4+^{4+} mixed valance heavy \textit{d}4^4 ions.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Rationale and design of BISTRO: a randomized controlled trial to determine whether bioimpedance spectroscopy guided fluid management maintains residual kidney function in incident haemodialysis patients

    Background: Preserved residual kidney function (RKF) and normal fluid status are associated with better patient outcomes in incident haemodialysis patients. The objective of this trial is to determine whether using bioimpedance technology in prescribing the optimal post-dialysis weight can reduce the rate of decline of RKF and potentially improve patient outcomes. Methods/Design: 516 patients commencing haemodialysis, aged >18 with RKF of > 3 ml/min/1.73 m2 or a urine volume >500 ml per day or per the shorter inter-dialytic period will be consented and enrolled into a pragmatic, open label, randomized controlled trial. The intervention is incorporation of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BI) determination of normally hydrated weight to set a post-dialysis target weight that limits volume depletion, compared to current standard practice. Clinicians and participants will be blinded to BI measures in the control group and a standardized record capturing management of fluid status will be used in all participants. Primary outcome is preservation of residual kidney function assessed as time to anuria (≤100 ml/day or ≤200 ml urine volume in the short inter-dialytic period). A sample size of 516 was based upon a cumulative incidence of 30% anuria in the control group and 20% in the treatment group and 11% competing risks (death, transplantation) over 10 months, with up to 2 years follow-up. Secondary outcomes include rate of decline in small solute clearance, significant adverse events, hospitalization, loss of vascular access, cardiovascular events and interventions, dialysis efficacy and safety, dialysis-related symptoms and quality of life. Economic evaluation will be carried out to determine the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Analyses will be adjusted for patient characteristics and dialysis unit practice patterns relevant to fluid management. Discussion: This trial will establish the added value of undertaking BI measures to support clinical management of fluid status and establish the relationship between fluid status and preservation of residual kidney function in incident haemodialysis patients.     Deuteron and antideuteron production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

    The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum range 1.1 < p_T < 4.3 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A coalescence analysis comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with those of protons and antiprotons, has been performed. The coalescence probability is equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and increases as a function of p_T, which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton yields p_bar/p = 0.73 +/- 0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields: d_bar/d = 0.47 +/- 0.03, we estimate that n_bar/n = 0.64 +/- 0.04.Comment: 326 authors, 6 pages text, 5 figures, 1 Table.     Single Electrons from Heavy Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

    The invariant differential cross section for inclusive electron production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range $0.4 <= p_T <= 5.0 GeV/c at midrapidity (eta <= 0.35). The contribution to the inclusive electron spectrum from semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy flavor, i.e. charm quarks or, at high p_T, bottom quarks, is determined via three independent methods. The resulting electron spectrum from heavy flavor decays is compared to recent leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The total cross section of charm quark-antiquark pair production is determined as sigma_(c c^bar) = 0.92 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +- 0.54 (sys.) mb.Comment: 329 authors, 6 pages text, 3 figures.     Hexagonal RMnO3: a model system for two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets

    The hexagonal RMnO3(h-RMnO3) are multiferroic materials, which exhibit the coexistence of a magnetic order and ferroelectricity. Their distinction is in their geometry that both results in an unusual mechanism to break inversion symmetry and also produces a two-dimensional triangular lattice of Mn spins, which is subject to geometrical magnetic frustration due to the antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest-neighbor Mn ions. This unique combination makes the h-RMnO3 a model system to test ideas of spin-lattice coupling, particularly when both the improper ferroelectricity and the Mn trimerization that appears to determine the symmetry of the magnetic structure arise from the same structure distortion. In this review we demonstrate how the use of both neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques have been essential to paint this comprehensive and coherent picture of h-RMnO3.     Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    A genome-wide association study for corneal astigmatism: The CREAM Consortium

    Purpose: To identify genes and genetic markers associated with corneal astigmatism. Methods: A meta-analysis was performed of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of corneal astigmatism undertaken for 14 European ancestry (N = 22,250) and 8 Asian ancestry (N = 9,120) cohorts by the CREAM Consortium. Cases were defined as having >0.75 D of corneal astigmatism. For the meta-analysed results of European ancestry cohorts, subsequent gene-based and gene-set analyses were performed using VEGAS2 and MAGMA software. Additionally, estimates of SNP-based heritability for corneal and refractive astigmatism and spherical equivalent were calculated for Europeans using LD score regression. Results: Meta-analysis of all cohorts identified a genome-wide significant locus near the gene PDGFRA (platelet derived growth factor receptor alpha): top SNP: rs7673984, odds ratio = 1.12 (95% CI: 1.08-1.16), P = 5.55 x 10-9. No other genome-wide significant loci were identified in the combined analysis or European/Asian ancestry-specific analyses. Gene-based analysis identified 3 novel candidate genes for corneal astigmatism in Europeans: CLDN7 (claudin-7), ACP2 (acid phosphatase 2, lysosomal) and TNFAIP8L3 (TNF alpha induced protein 8 like 3). Conclusions: In addition to replicating a previously identified genome-wide significant locus for corneal astigmatism near the PDGFRA gene, gene-based analysis identified 3 novel candidate genes CLDN7, ACP2 and TNFAIP8L3 that warrant further investigation to understand their role in the pathogenesis of corneal astigmatism. The much lower number of genetic variants and genes demonstrating association with corneal astigmatism compared to published spherical equivalent GWAS analyses suggest a greater influence of rare genetic variants, non-additive genetic effects, or environmental factors to the development of astigmatism
