    Prototype of a new tip developed to be coupled to dental light-curing units for optimizing bonding of orthodontic brackets and accessories

    OBJECTIVE: development of a new device to be coupled to light-curing units for bonding orthodontic brackets and accessories, and test its efficacy in an in vitro mechanical trial. The inner surface of the device is mirrored and is based on physical concepts of light refraction and reflection. The main advantage of such device is the reduced clinical time needed for bonding and the low possibility of contamination during the process. METHODS: One hundred and twenty specimens were used for testing the shear bond strength of brackets bonded with the device. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was also determined. The sample was divided into 2 groups. In group 1 a halogen light-curing unit was used while in group 2 a led light-curing unit was used. Each group was then subdivided. In subgroups H1 and L1, a conventional light guide rod was used while in subgroups H2 and L2 bonding was performed with the mirrored device coupled to the tip of the guide light rod. RESULTS: The values obtained for the shear bond strength and the ARI in the subgroups were compared. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference for the shear strength (p > 0.05) and the ARI (p > 0.05) between the subgroups. CONCLUSION: The tests of mechanical trials and the ARI analysis showed that the new device fulfilled the requirements for bonding orthodontic accessories, and that the time for bonding was reduced to half, being necessary only one light exposure.OBJETIVO: desenvolver uma nova ponteira para ser acoplada aos aparelhos fotopolimerizadores utilizados para colagem de braquetes e acessĂłrios ortodĂŽnticos, e testar sua da efetividade em ensaio mecĂąnico in vitro. A ponteira Ă© espelhada na superfĂ­cie interna e baseia-se em conceitos fĂ­sicos de refração e reflexĂŁo de luz. Apresenta como principal vantagem o menor tempo clĂ­nico durante o procedimento de colagem, reduzindo a possibilidade de contaminação durante o processo. MÉTODOS: por meio de ensaio de resistĂȘncia ao cisalhamento e determinação do Ă­ndice remanescente de adesivo (IRA), testou-se a ponteira desenvolvida em 120 corpos de prova. A amostra foi dividia em dois grupos. No grupo 1, foi utilizado aparelho fotopolimerizador de fonte de luz halĂłgena e, no grupo 2, fonte de LED. Cada grupo foi subdividido. Nos subgrupos H1 e L1, utilizou-se a ponteira convencional. Nos subgrupos H2 e L2 a colagem foi feita utilizando a ponteira desenvolvida para a polimerização do material de colagem. RESULTADOS: os valores dos testes de cisalhamento e IRA para os subgrupos foram comparados entre si. Os resultados mostraram que nĂŁo houve diferença estatisticamente significativa para o ensaio de resistĂȘncia ao cisalhamento (p > 0,05) nem para o IRA (p > 0,05) entre os subgrupos. CONCLUSÃO: os testes de ensaio mecĂąnico, assim como a anĂĄlise do IRA, mostraram que a nova ponteira desenvolvida cumpriu os requisitos necessĂĄrios Ă  colagem dos acessĂłrios ortodĂŽnticos, e que o tempo de colagem foi reduzido pela metade, sendo necessĂĄria uma sĂł incidĂȘncia

    Invisalign Therapy in a Case of Mandibular Incisor Extraction

    Clear aligners have been sought by patients as an aesthetic alternative to conventional orthodontic treatment. Despite the limitation that the aligner system offers, its use has improved over time. Hereby, authors discusses case of a 35-year-old female with Angle’s Class I malocclusion patient with severe mandibular crowding who was treated with mandibular incisor extraction using the Invisalign system. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed skeletal Class I malocclusion, severe crowding of the lower incisors, light crowding of the upper incisors, crossbite of the mandibular right canine, a convex profile, prominent lower lip, and a Bolton discrepancy in the lower anterior region. Fourteen trays were used in the maxillary arch and 28 in the mandibular arch. Two additional refinements, one with 13 and the other with 10 trays were delivered. After 2 years and 2 months of active treatment, good posterior occlusion and alignment of the teeth with adequate occlusion function and a balanced smile were achieved. The maxillary retainer was used continuously for 1 year, and at night until now. Successful tooth alignment and space closure were maintained, and the patient was satisfied with the results on the 2 year follow-up

    Surgical-orthodontic Treatment of Skeletal Class III Malocclusion and Concomitant Open Bite: A Case Report

    Surgical-orthodontic treatment for the correction of skeletal Class III malocclusion and concomitant open bite is challenging due to the probability of postsurgical relapse. The present case (19 year-old male) describes successful surgical-orthodontic treatment for the correction of Class III malocclusion with anterior and posterior open bite. Treatment consisted of the use of an Edgewise fixed appliance (0.022” × 0.028”) and bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Treatment resulted in bilateral Class I molar and canine relationships, normal overjet and overbite, the correction of anterior and posterior open bite, alignment of the midlines, leveling of the curve of Spee, satisfactory facial harmony, and passive lip seal. The correct diagnosis as well as the proper indication and execution of orthodontic and surgical treatments enabled the achievement of satisfactory functional and facial results and smile esthetics

    Judicial Vulnerability on the Exercise of Orthodontics: Construction and Validation of a Questionnaire

    Objective: To develop and validate a questionnaire to measure the vulnerability of orthodontists, measuring the risks of being involved in civil liability lawsuits. Material and Methods: In-depth interviews were performed with three groups: G1- law professionals, G2 – orthodontists, and G3 – orthodontic patients. From the analysis of the content of Bardin, domains for the construction of the first version of the 53-question questionnaire were identified. The questionnaire was submitted to experts for validation, inclusion and exclusion of questions, but maintaining the 53-question format. It was submitted to the test-retest phases and verification of internal consistency. Results: 247 professionals answered the final version of the questionnaire. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 88.8%. Cronbach's alpha was 0.946, with high internal consistency. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett’s tests confirmed internal consistency showing the values of 0.909 and significance of <0.001, respectively. From the total score and factorial analysis, the sample was divided into three groups of judicial vulnerability. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the questionnaire is a valid tool to measure the risks of involvement in civil liability lawsuits by orthodontists. It presented a multidimensional character and might be applied as well as face to face or online, without prejudice to quality

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Peer reviewe

    Search for top squark production in fully hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search for production of the supersymmetric partners of the top quark, top squarks, is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision events containing multiple jets, no leptons, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The targeted signal production scenarios are direct and gluino-mediated top squark production, including scenarios in which the top squark and neutralino masses are nearly degenerate. The search utilizes novel algorithms based on deep neural networks that identify hadronically decaying top quarks and W bosons, which are expected in many of the targeted signal models. No statistically significant excess of events is observed relative to the expectation from the standard model, and limits on the top squark production cross section are obtained in the context of simplified supersymmetric models for various production and decay modes. Exclusion limits as high as 1310 GeVare established at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the top squark for direct top squark production models, and as high as 2260 GeV on the mass of the gluino for gluino-mediated top squark production models. These results represent a significant improvement over the results of previous searches for supersymmetry by CMS in the same final state.Peer reviewe

    Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in the diphoton decay channel at root s=13 TeV

    Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons are reported. Events are selected from a sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). Analysis categories enriched in Higgs boson events produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, vector boson associated production, and production associated with top quarks are constructed. The total Higgs boson signal strength, relative to the standard model (SM) prediction, is measured to be 1.12 +/- 0.09. Other properties of the Higgs boson are measured, including SM signal strength modifiers, production cross sections, and its couplings to other particles. These include the most precise measurements of gluon fusion and vector boson fusion Higgs boson production in several different kinematic regions, the first measurement of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair in five regions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, and an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson production in association with a single top quark. All results are found to be in agreement with the SM expectations.Peer reviewe
