Framework Programmable Platform for the advanced software development workstation: Framework processor design document
The design of the Framework Processor (FP) component of the Framework Programmable Software Development Platform (FFP) is described. The FFP is a project aimed at combining effective tool and data integration mechanisms with a model of the software development process in an intelligent integrated software development environment. Guided by the model, this Framework Processor will take advantage of an integrated operating environment to provide automated support for the management and control of the software development process so that costly mistakes during the development phase can be eliminated
Back to the sea twice: identifying candidate plant genes for molecular evolution to marine life
Background:
Seagrasses are a polyphyletic group of monocotyledonous angiosperms that have adapted to a completely submerged lifestyle in marine waters. Here, we exploit two collections of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of two wide-spread and ecologically important seagrass species, the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile and the eelgrass Zostera marina L., which have independently evolved from aquatic ancestors. This replicated, yet independent evolutionary history facilitates the identification of traits that may have evolved in parallel and are possible instrumental candidates for adaptation to a marine habitat.
Results:
In our study, we provide the first quantitative perspective on molecular adaptations in two seagrass species. By constructing orthologous gene clusters shared between two seagrasses (Z. marina and P. oceanica) and eight distantly related terrestrial angiosperm species, 51 genes could be identified with detection of positive selection along the seagrass branches of the phylogenetic tree. Characterization of these positively selected genes using KEGG pathways and the Gene Ontology uncovered that these genes are mostly involved in translation, metabolism, and photosynthesis.
Conclusions:
These results provide first insights into which seagrass genes have diverged from their terrestrial counterparts via an initial aquatic stage characteristic of the order and to the derived fully-marine stage characteristic of seagrasses. We discuss how adaptive changes in these processes may have contributed to the evolution towards an aquatic and marine existence
Operation and performance of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter in Run 1
The Tile Calorimeter is the hadron calorimeter covering the central region of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Approximately 10,000 photomultipliers collect light from scintillating tiles acting as the active material sandwiched between slabs of steel absorber. This paper gives an overview of the calorimeterâs performance during the years 2008â2012 using cosmic-ray muon events and protonâproton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV with a total integrated luminosity of nearly 30 fbâ1. The signal reconstruction methods, calibration systems as well as the detector operation status are presented. The energy and time calibration methods performed excellently, resulting in good stability of the calorimeter response under varying conditions during the LHC Run 1. Finally, the Tile Calorimeter response to isolated muons and hadrons as well as to jets from protonâproton collisions is presented. The results demonstrate excellent performance in accord with specifications mentioned in the Technical Design Report
Pedagogical memory and the space of the postcolonial classroom : reading Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions
This article addresses issues of the mnemonic space of the literature classroom by
interrogating a classic text of African womenâs writing, Tsitsi Dangaremngaâs Nervous
Conditions (1988) for the ways it speaks about education in 1960s and 1970s late-colonial
Rhodesia. The article suggests that the novel reviews and critiques a number of memorial
strategies that were crucial to the colonial educational system, thereby facilitating a reflexive
application of the novelâs concerns to the contexts in which it is often taught, that of todayâs
postcolonial classrooms. The article seeks to place Dangarembgaâs novel in the context of its
present moment, contemporary South Africa â that of the present criticâs site of practice, both
pedagogical and scholarly, and that of many of this articleâs readers. This present moment, in
turn, is made up the many sites, successive and simultaneous, in which the novelâs work of
memory is being re-activated in the minds of students as readers and writers. Via a dialogue
between the textual past and the pedagogical present, one which is often subject to critical
amnesia, the article seeks to inaugurate a debate on the nature of pedagogical memory in the

A novel methodological framework was described for detecting and quantifying overdiagnosis
OBJECTIVES: Methods to quantify overdiagnosis of screen detected cancer have been developed, but methods for quantifying overdiagnosis of noncancer conditions (whether symptomatic or asymptomatic) have been lacking. We aimed to develop a methodological framework for quantifying overdiagnosis that may be used for asymptomatic or symptomatic conditions and used gestational diabetes mellitus as an example of how it may be applied.STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We identify two earlier definitions for overdiagnosis, a narrower prognosis-based definition and a wider utility-based definition. Building on the central importance of the concepts of prognostic information and clinical utility of a diagnosis, we consider the following questions: within a target population, do people found to have a disease using one diagnostic strategy but found not to have the disease using another diagnostic strategy (so called 'additional diagnoses'), have an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes without treatment (prognosis evidence), and/or a decreased risk of adverse outcomes with treatment (utility evidence)?RESULTS: Using Causal Directed Acyclic Graphs and fair umpires, we illuminate the relationships between diagnostics strategies and the frequency of overdiagnosis. We then use the example of gestational diabetes mellitus to demonstrate how the Fair Umpire framework may be applied to estimate overdiagnosis.CONCLUSION: Our framework may be used to quantify overdiagnosis in noncancer conditions (and in cancer conditions) and to guide further studies on this topic.</p

Ethnic differences in beta-cell function, dietary intake and expression of the metabolic syndrome among UK adults of south Asian, black African-Caribbean and white-European origin at high risk of metabolic syndrome
A cross-sectional analysis of ethnic differences in dietary intake, insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function, using the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), was conducted on 497 healthy adult participants of the âReading, Imperial, Surrey, Cambridge, and Kingsâ (RISCK) study. Insulin sensitivity (Si) was significantly lower in African-Caribbean (AC) and South Asian (SA) participants [IVGTT-Si; AC: 2.13 vs SA: 2.25 vs white-European (WE): 2.84 (Ă10â4 mL ”U min)2, p < 0.001]. AC participants had a higher prevalence of anti-hypertensive therapy (AC: 19.7% vs SA: 7.5%), the most cardioprotective lipid profile [total:high-density lipoprotein (HDL); AC: 3.52 vs SA: 4.08 vs WE: 3.83, p = 0.03] and more pronounced hyperinsulinaemia [IVGTTâacute insulin response (AIR)] [AC: 575 vs SA: 428 vs WE: 344 mL/”U/min)2, p = 0.002], specifically in female participants. Intake of saturated fat and carbohydrate was lower and higher in AC (10.9% and 50.4%) and SA (11.1% and 52.3%), respectively, compared to WE (13.6% and 43.8%, p < 0.001). Insulin resistance in ACs is characterised by ânormalâ lipid profiles but high rates of hypertension and pronounced hyperinsulinaemia
