    Developing a Research Mentorship Program: The American Society of Pediatric Nephrology's Experience

    Background: Most pediatric nephrologists work in academia. Mentor-mentee relationships provide support and guidance for successful research career. Mentorship program implementation is valuable in medical fields for providing research opportunities to young faculty. Methods: The American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) established a research mentorship program to (a) assist with matching of appropriate mentor-mentee dyads and (b) establish metrics for desirable mentor-mentee outcomes with two independent components: (1) the grants review workshop, a short-term program providing mentor feedback on grant proposals, and (2) the longitudinal program, establishing long-term mentor-mentee relationships. Regular surveys of both mentors and mentees were reviewed to evaluate and refine the program. Results: Twelve mentees and 17 mentors participated in the grant review workshop and 19 mentees were matched to mentors in the longitudinal program. A review of NIH RePORTER data indicated that since 2014, 13 NIH grants have been awarded. Mentees in the longitudinal program reported that the program helped most with identifying an outside mentor, improving grant research content, and with general career development. Mentors perceived themselves to be most helpful in assisting with overall career plans. Email communications were preferred over phone or face-to-face communications. Mentees endorsed strong interest in staying in touch with their mentors and 100% of mentors expressed their willingness to serve in the future. Conclusion: This mentorship program was initiated and supported by a relatively small medical society and has shown early success in cultivating mentoring relationships for a future generation of clinician-scientists

    Bi-harmonic superspace for N=4 d=4 super Yang-Mills

    We develop N=4 d=4 bi-harmonic superspace and use it to derive a novel form for the low-energy effective action in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We solve the N=4 supergauge constraints in this superspace in terms of analytic superfields. Using these superfields, we construct a simple functional that respects N=4 supersymmetry and scale invariance. In components, it reproduces all on-shell terms in the four-derivative part of the N=4 SYM effective action; in particular, the F^4/X^4 and Wess-Zumino terms.     Nest predator species of open nesting songbirds of abandoned fields in «Russky Sever» National Park (Russia)

    The study was conducted in the southern part of the «Russky Sever» National Park during 2016–2017 as a part of the research on the life history and demography of songbirds breeding in abandoned fields. The nest fate was established by using motion-sensing trail cameras. Among 87 controlled nests, 36 were depredated and revealed at least seven predator species. Almost all predators were mainly attracted by nests with nestlings. But not all predation events led to fully depredated nests. Our data suggest that the local populations of ground-nesting passerines in national park «Russky Sever» are under the influence of several groups of nest predators

    Hafnium vs. Zirconium, the Perpetual Battle for Supremacy in Catalytic Olefin Polymerization: A Simple Matter of Electrophilicity?

    The performance of C2-symmetric ansa-hafnocene catalysts for isotactic polypropylene typically deteriorates at increasing temperature much faster than that of their zirconium analogues. Herein, we analyze in detail a set of five Hf/Zr metallocene pairs—including some of the latest generation catalysts—at medium- to high-polymerization temperature. Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models for stereoselectivity, the ratio allyl/vinyl chain ends, and 2,1/3,1 misinsertions in the polymer indicate a strong dependence of polymerization performance on electrophilicity of the catalyst, which is a function of the ligand framework and the metal center. Based on this insight, the stronger performance decline of hafnocenes is ascribed to electrophilicity-dependent stabilization effects

    Glial Cell Architecture Dynamics in Dentate Gyrus and CA4 Area of Wistar Rat Hippocampus Following 20-minute Occlusion of Common Carotid Arteries

    Aim. To study the distribution and spatial organization of dentate gyrus (DG) astrocytes and CA4 area of hippocampus of Wistar rats following 20-minute occlusion of common carotid arteries (OCCA) compared to sham-operated control animals.Material and methods. Histological (Nissl staining with hematoxylin and eosin), immunohistochemical (GFAP, MAP-2) and morphometric methods were used. Astrocytes and neurons in control (sham-operated animals, n = 5) group, after 6 hours (n=5), 1 days (n=5), 3 days (n=5), 7 days (n=5), 14 days (n=5) and 30 days (n=5) after 20-minute OCCA were studied on thin (4 µm) serial frontal sections of the hippocampus. Fractal analysis (ImageJ 1.52; fraclac 2.5 plugin) was used to obtain additional quantitative information on the spatial organization of astrocyte networks. Statistical hypotheses were tested using nonparametric criteria.Results. 30 days after the 20-minute OCCA, only 5.3% of CA4 neurons were irreversibly destroyed and the total numerical density of DG granular cells remained at the control level. Hypertrophy and increased complexity of the spatial organization of astrocyte processes were observed 6 hours and 1 day after OCCA and persisted for 30 days. Astrogliosis was accompanied by an increased relative area of GFAP-positive material and fractal dimension and reduced lacunarity of the astrocyte network. The latter was especially evident in 1, 14 and 30 days after the OCCA.Conclusion. After the 20-minute OCCA, the density of GFAP-positive material increased, the fibroarchitecture reorganized and gained more complexity due to the branching of astrocyte processes. At the same time, the total numerical density of neurons changed only slightly. All this indicated the probable role of astrocytes in post-ischemic activation of natural neuroprotection mechanisms
