    Effect of delayed icing on the quality of tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fab.)

    Effect of delayed icing on the quality of Penaeus monodon iced after three hours of harvest was studied in plastic and bamboo baskets. After harvest of three hours at ambient temperature (28°-32°C), ice was added to the shrimp at a ratio of 1:1 (shrimp:ice) and stored for 21 hours in both the baskets. Quality evaluation was carried out through visual assessment, biochemical analysis and microbial analysis for 24 hours. The organoleptic evaluation and scoring was done from the time of harvest treated as 0 hour and the average score was 10. At 9th hour after iced condition quality of shrimp was found reduced to the next stage (acceptable) with a score ranged from 8.4-6.5 in both baskets. This acceptable stage was observed throughout the experiment for bamboo basket whereas in the plastic basket the quality was reduced to a small extent with a score of 6.4 (moderately acceptable). Till the end point of the experiment the quality of shrimp was acceptable in respect to biochemical analysis. The microbial load was found log sub(10) 3.99±0.12 cfu/g to log sub(10) 4.33±0.21 cfu/g and log sub(10) 4.01 ±0.12 cfu/g to log sub(10) 4.83±0.19 cfu/g in the bamboo and plastic basket respectively. The importers or buyers suggests for immediate icing to maintain good quality but results of the present experiment suggest that the quality does not vary drastically for first three hours

    Organoleptic and microbiological quality changes of catla (Catla catla) in immediate and delayed ice storage and at ambient temperature

    An investigation was carried out on the quality changes of Catla (Catla calla) stored immediately (0 h) in ice, after 6 hours in ice and at ambient temperature. The samples were examined for organoleptic and microbiological parameters in summer. Organoleptically, the acceptability of fish varied between 16-20 days in both the iced storage conditions and 12-13.5 hours at ambient temperature (28°C). When fish were organoleptically just acceptable on the 16th day of storage, bacterial load were 6.23 and 6.17 log10 cfu/g, respectively for 0 hour and after 6 hours iced fish. But on the 20th day of storage, when fish were just unacceptable SPC were 6.51 and 6.62 log10 cfu/g. In case of ambient temperature storage condition standard plate count was 8.36 log10 cfu/g on 13.5 hours, when fish were organoleptically just unacceptable. At the time of rejection for fish stored in ice (0 hour and after 6 hours) on 20th day, gram negative and gram positive values were 55.45%, 44.55% and 44.52%, 55.48% respectively. While fish were rejected after 13.5 hours at ambient temperature gram negative and gram positive bacteria were found as 43.02% and 56.98%. The differences in SPC, gram positive and gram negative bacteria between the storage times were statistically significant (p<0.05)

    Depletion of CLK2 sensitizes glioma stem-like cells to PI3K/mTOR and FGFR inhibitors.

    The Cdc2-like kinases (CLKs) regulate RNA splicing and have been shown to suppress cell growth. Knockdown of CLK2 was found to block glioma stem-like cell (GSC) growth in vivo through the AKT/FOXO3a/p27 pathway without activating mTOR and MAPK signaling, suggesting that these pathways mediate resistance to CLK2 inhibition. We identified CLK2 binding partners using immunoprecipitation assays and confirmed their interactions in vitro in GSCs. We then tested the cellular viability of several signaling inhibitors in parental and CLK2 knockdown GSCs. Our results demonstrate that CLK2 binds to 14-3-3τ isoform and prevents its ubiquitination in GSCs. Stable CLK2 knockdown increased PP2A activity and activated PI3K signaling. Treatment with a PI3K/mTOR inhibitor in CLK2 knockdown cells led to a modest reduction in cell viability compared to drug treatment alone at a lower dose. However, FGFR inhibitor in CLK2 knockdown cells led to a decrease in cell viability and increased apoptosis. Reduced expression of CLK2 in glioblastoma, in combination with FGFR inhibitors, led to synergistic apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest compared to blockade or either kinase alone

    Estimation of morphometric relationships for flathead sillago, Sillaginopsis panijus (Hamilton, 1822) in the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) using multi-linear dimensions

    253-257This study on flathead sillago, Sillaginopsis panijus (Hamilton 1822) estimates the first morphometric relationships from the marine ecosystem, Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh using multi-linear dimensions. Additionally, meristic counts for different fin-rays were done. Alltogether, 204 specimens were captured during July 2018 to June 2019 by several gears including seine net and long lines. Morphometric measurements as well as body weight (BW) were recorded for each individual. The LWRs (length-weight relationships) were assessed as: W = a × Lb. Lateral line scales and fin rays were observed by magnifying glass. The LWRs and LLRs (length-length relationships) were found significant (p r2 values being ≥ 0.913 and ≥ 0.952, respectively. Based on r2 values, LWRs by BW vs. SL and for LLRs, TL vs. FL were found as the best model. Fin formula observed for S. panijus is D1 IX; D2 I/24-28; P.17-20; Pv.1/5; A I-II/24-27; C 2/16-18. Scales on lateral line were ~82-86. This investigation should be helpful for resource management in the marine ecosystems of Bangladesh and other subtropical countries

    The Hooghly croaker, Panna heterolepis Trewavas, 1977: Identification through morphometric and meristic characteristics

    502-506As morphometric information for Hooghly croaker Panna heterolepis Trewavas, 1977 is absent in the most extensively accessed and world’s largest online database for fishes (FishBase); this study was undertaken to provide the complete informative description on morphometric relationships and meristic counts of various fin rays. A total of 200 individuals were sampled from the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) during July 2018 to June 2019, using several traditional fishing gears. Meristic counts were computed using a magnifying glass. Body weight (BW) and several length measurements were taken through an electronic balance and digital slide calipers for each individual. LWRs (Length-weight relationships) were calculated as: W = a×Lb. All LWRs and LLRs (length-length relationships) were found significant with r2 ≥ 0.919 (p < 0.0001) and 0.928 (p < 0.001), respectively. BW vs. TL and TL vs. SL were the best fitted models for LWRs and LLRs, respectively. Fin formula was: dorsal, D. 43–55 (VIII–X+i/34–44); pectoral, P. 15-17 (i/14–16); pelvic, Pv. 6 (I/5); anal, A. 7–10 (II/5–8); and caudal, C. 17–19 (ii/15–17). These results will a) make a vital contribution for species identification in the marine and coastal waters of Bangladesh and adjoining countries, and b) provide information for Fish Base

    Animal Models for Studying Protein-Bound Uremic Toxin Removal—A Systematic Review

    Protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are associated with the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated morbidity and mortality. The conventional dialysis techniques are unable to efficiently remove PBUTs due to their plasma protein binding. Therefore, novel approaches are being developed, but these require validation in animals before clinical trials can begin. We conducted a systematic review to document PBUT concentrations in various models and species. The search strategy returned 1163 results for which abstracts were screened, resulting in 65 full-text papers for data extraction (rats (n = 41), mice (n = 17), dogs (n = 3), cats (n = 4), goats (n = 1), and pigs (n = 1)). We performed descriptive and comparative analyses on indoxyl sulfate (IS) concentrations in rats and mice. The data on large animals and on other PBUTs were too heterogeneous for pooled analysis. Most rodent studies reported mean uremic concentrations of plasma IS close to or within the range of those during kidney failure in humans, with the highest in tubular injury models in rats. Compared to nephron loss models in rats, a greater rise in plasma IS compared to creatinine was found in tubular injury models, suggesting tubular secretion was more affected than glomerular filtration. In summary, tubular injury rat models may be most relevant for the in vivo validation of novel PBUT-lowering strategies for kidney failure in humans

    Universal logic with encoded spin qubits in silicon

    Qubits encoded in a decoherence-free subsystem and realized in exchange-coupled silicon quantum dots are promising candidates for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Benefits of this approach include excellent coherence, low control crosstalk, and configurable insensitivity to certain error sources. Key difficulties are that encoded entangling gates require a large number of control pulses and high-yielding quantum dot arrays. Here we show a device made using the single-layer etch-defined gate electrode architecture that achieves both the required functional yield needed for full control and the coherence necessary for thousands of calibrated exchange pulses to be applied. We measure an average two-qubit Clifford fidelity of 97.1±0.2%97.1 \pm 0.2\% with randomized benchmarking. We also use interleaved randomized benchmarking to demonstrate the controlled-NOT gate with 96.3±0.7%96.3 \pm 0.7\% fidelity, SWAP with 99.3±0.5%99.3 \pm 0.5\% fidelity, and a specialized entangling gate that limits spreading of leakage with 93.8±0.7%93.8 \pm 0.7\% fidelity

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.
