: Beyond the Papunya Dot. New works by Australian artists

    No full text
catalogue d'exposition'Beyond the Papunya Dot' invites eight Australian artists and an art collective to present their vision of the Aboriginal art world through the exhibition of new works. It will open at the same time as the exhibition 'Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art' taking place in the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris in October. 'Beyond the Papunya Dot' is an echo to this superb project. Designed by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, 'Tjukurrtjanu' celebrates the 40th anniversary of Papunya Tula in 1971-72 by the founding artists of the Western Desert art movement. The exhibition 'Beyond the Papunya Dot' aims to give a voice to very different artists working with a large variety of media and shows other aspects of the Australian art world than the well-known dot paintings.'Le Point de Papunya' propose à huit artistes et un collectif australiens de présenter leur vision de l'art aborigÚne à travers une exposition d'oeuvres nouvelles et a été conçue pour faire écho à la venue en France de l'exposition itinérante de la National Gallery of Victoria.

Entangled Values: construction of a global conception of Australian Indigenous arts

in Steffen Dalsgaard and Ton Otto, 'Value, transvaluation and globalization', (guest editors)International audienceFocusing on the Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct funded initially by the Australia Council and directed by several peak bodies for the visual arts and Indigenous arts - an initiative that has emerged from the Senate Inquiry into Australia's Indigenous visual arts sector, 2006 - I analyse the way French art dealers specialized in Aboriginal arts discuss and locate value differences within or between the economic and cultural domains. The presentation of this ethnographic data will contribute to the discussion on how procedures can be designed to discuss and respect value differences

Pacific artistic communities in Australia: Gaining visibility in the art world

    Get PDF
This article shows that although Pacific arts began to be largely recognised in Australia in the 1990s, Pacific artists based in Australia remained mostly invisible in the contemporary art scene until the mid-2000s. I aim to demonstrate how Pacific artists and curators—who in some cases collaborated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and curators—have made visible myriad Pacific identities and social trajectories in Australian cities. Exhibitions reveal and highlight multiple experiences of Pacific people residing in Australia, for whom Pacific cultures are partly mediated by the experiences of their relatives, popularised by museum collections and coloured by the gaze of non-Pacific people. This article is built around two cultural events that have not previously received scholarly attention, a group show curated in Sydney by Māori artist and cultural worker Keren Ruki and a triennial in Brisbane imagined and organised by Bundjalung Yugambeh (Aboriginal Australian) artist and curator Jenny Fraser. It addresses how narratives in the 2000s were often connected to objectives of empowerment and the necessity to build a future for Pacific peoples in Australian society

Australian Indigenous ‘artists’ critical agency and the values of the art market

    Get PDF
The recent integration of Australian Indigenous arts in the field of contemporary art is the fruit of a complex historical process deeply rooted in social and political relationships. The Aboriginal art market has grown exponentially over the last 40 years and the artwork has become an international icon of Australian identity. However, Aboriginal art has been, and to a certain extent, is still endangered by cheap imitations, fakes and the transgression of Indigenous artists’ rights and commu..

Identification and genetic diversity of two invasive Pissodes spp. Germar (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) in their introduced range in the southern hemisphere

    Get PDF
During the first half of the twentieth century, two accidental cases of introduction of Pissodes weevils were recorded from the southern hemisphere. The weevils in South Africa were identified as the deodar weevil (Pissodes nemorensis) and those in South America as the small banded pine weevil (Pissodes castaneus). Wide distribution of the two species in their invasive range, general difficulty in identifying some Pissodes spp., and the varying feeding and breeding behaviours of the species in South Africa has necessitated better evidence of species identity and genetic diversity of both species and population structure of the species in South Africa. Barcoding and the Jerry-to-Pat region of the COI gene were investigated. Morphometric data of the South African species was analysed. Our results confirmed the introduction of only one Pissodes species of North American origin to South Africa. However, this species is not P. nemorensis, but an unrecognized species of the P. strobi complex or a hybrid between P. strobi and P. nemorensis. Only P. castaneus, of European origin, was identified from South America. We identified ten mitochondrial DNA haplotypes from South Africa with evidence of moderate genetic structure among geographic populations. Terminal leader and bole-feeding weevils did not differ at the COI locus. A single haplotype was identified from populations of P. castaneus in South America. Results of the present study will have implications on quarantine, research and management of these insect species.Tree Protection Co-operative Program (TPCP), DST-National Research Foundation (NRF) and the University of Pretoria, South Africa.http://link.springer.com/journal/105302017-08-31hb2017Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI)GeneticsZoology and Entomolog

Embracing Nature-based Solutions to promote resilient marine and coastal ecosystems

    Get PDF
The world is struggling to limit greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the human footprint on nature. We therefore urgently need to think about how to achieve more with actions to address mounting challenges for human health and wellbeing from biodiversity loss, climate change effects, and unsustainable economic and social development. Nature-based Solutions (NBS) have emerged as a systemic approach and an important component of the response to these challenges. In marine and coastal spaces, NBS can contribute to improved environmental health, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and a more sustainable blue economy, if implemented to a high standard. However, NBS have been largely studied for terrestrial – particularly urban – systems, with limited uptake thus far in marine and coastal areas, despite an abundance of opportunities. Here, we provide explanations for this lag and propose the following three research priorities to advance marine and coastal NBS: (1) Improve understanding of marine and coastal biodiversity-ecosystem services relationships to support NBS better designed for rebuilding system resilience and achieving desired ecological outcomes under climate change; (2) Provide scientific guidance on how and where to implement marine and coastal NBS and better coordinate strategies and projects to facilitate their design, effectiveness, and value through innovative synergistic actions; (3) Develop ways to enhance marine and coastal NBS communication, collaboration, ocean literacy and stewardship to raise awareness, co-create solutions with stakeholders, boost public and policy buy-in, and potentially drive a more sustained investment. Research effort in these three areas will help practitioners, policy-makers and society embrace NBS for managing marine and coastal ecosystems for tangible benefits to people and marine life. The study received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement MaCoBioS (contract no 869710), FutureMARES (contract no 869300) and REST-COAST (contract no 101037097).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

AGuIXÂź from bench to bedside-Transfer of an ultrasmall theranostic gadolinium-based nanoparticle to clinical medicine

International audienceAGuIX¼ are sub-5 nm nanoparticles made of a polysiloxane matrix and gadolinium chelates. This nanoparticle has been recently accepted in clinical trials in association with radiotherapy. This review will summarize the principal preclinical results that have led to first in man administration. No evidence of toxicity has been observed during regulatory toxicity tests on two animal species (rodents and monkeys). Biodistributions on different animal models have shown passive uptake in tumours due to enhanced permeability and retention effect combined with renal elimination of the nanoparticles after intravenous administration. High radiosensitizing effect has been observed with different types of irradiations in vitro and in vivo on a large number of cancer types (brain, lung, melanoma, head and neck
). The review concludes with the second generation of AGuIX nanoparticles and the first preliminary results on human
