Educación y pobreza: factores de cambio social

This research article explores the factors related to social change through education in contexts of impoverished and marginalized youth in Veracruz. For this purpose, it recompiles data from the collection of information gathered from a project on young people through a qualitative approach carried out in medium-sized cities of that state, in which the political participation of young people was the main focus, but the educational issue was very important to understand the youth trajectories. Our article stems from the research “Promoting spaces for civic participation, inclusion and the reduction of Violence” sponsored by the IDRC (International Development Research Center of Canada). Which focused on the social inclusion and citizenship of young people in environments of violence, vulnerability and exclusion in the state of Veracruz. It was carried out in collaboration with the Universidad Veracruzana, the Municipal Services Center (CESEM) and the Movement to Support Working and Street Children (MATRACA-AC) during 2017 to 2020. The survey of the project from which we recovered data For this work, the research consisted of 20 focus groups, 46 interviews with young people and 14 with teachers in Xalapa, Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz and Poza Rica, cities in the State of Veracruz. The data indicates that, at minimum, there are five factors that constrain youth educational projects: family income, aspirations, social context, social networks and teacher support. These elements of contingent combination determine the youth trajectories identified in the school field and can explain both permanence and dropout from school in these cities.Este artículo de investigación explora los factores relacionados con el cambio social por la educación en jóvenes en contextos de pobreza y marginación en Veracruz. Para tal efecto, recupera datos del levantamiento de información de un proyecto sobre jóvenes mediante un enfoque cualitativo realizado en ciudades medias de ese estado, en el cual se estudiaba la participación política de los jóvenes, pero el tema educativo era muy importante para comprender las trayectorias juveniles. Nuestro artículo es derivado de la investigación “Promover espacios para la participación cívica, la inclusión y la reducción de la Violencia” patrocinado por el IDRC (Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo de Canadá). La cual se enfocó en la inclusión social y la ciudadanía de los jóvenes en entornos de violencia, vulnerabilidad y exclusión en el estado de Veracruz. Se llevó a cabo en colaboración con la Universidad Veracruzana, el Centro de Servicios Municipales (CESEM) y el Movimiento de Apoyo a Niños Trabajadores y de la Calle (MATRACA-AC) durante al 2017 al 2020. El levantamiento del proyecto del cual recuperamos datos para este trabajo consistió en 20 grupos focales, 46 entrevistas a jóvenes y 14 a docentes en Xalapa, Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz y Poza Rica ciudades del Estado de Veracruz. Los datos indican que, al menos, existen cinco factores que constriñen los proyectos educativos juveniles: ingreso familiar, aspiraciones, contexto social, redes sociales y apoyo docente. Estos elementos de combinación contingente determinan las trayectorias juveniles individuadas en el campo escolar y pueden explicar tanto la permanencia como el abandono de la escuela en estas ciudades

Capital social y representaciones sociales sobre la prueba Papanicolaou

El presente trabajo aborda principalmente la literatura de los teóricos sociales Sergio Moscovici, seguido por el pensamiento de Denise Jodelet, Jean Claude Abric, José Antonio Castorina y  Thomas Luckmann, entre otros, para ilustrar  cómo la representación social constituye modalidades de pensamiento práctico orientados hacia la comprensión y dominio del entorno social, para después  referir los elementos de ésta. A lo largo del artículo se sustenta el supuesto que se formuló: “Los estereotipos, opiniones, creencias o valores que tienen las mujeres acerca del cáncer cervicouterino que habitan las zonas del centroponiente y norponiente, afectan la práctica de la prueba Papanicolaou” la cual sirvió de guía en mi investigación para presentar los elementos involucrados y comprobar el razonamiento del que partimos

Las aspiraciones sociales de la adolescencia en México

The aim of this research article is to analyze the opinions of adolescents that are at risk of falling prey to violence and delinquency in the local municipalities of Xalapa, Poza Rica, Puerto de Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos in the state of Veracruz (Mexico). The field work was carried out in poverty-stricken neighbourhoods as categorized by the Department of Social Development. For the purposes of our research, we took a sampling from primary and secondary schools located within the areas under study, with the participation of 434 adolescents from 10 to 14 years of age. A descriptive approach was adopted to analyze the data, with correlations being discussed and the data analysis carried out using SPSS version 25. It was found that adolescents clearly identify the problems in their family, school, neighbourhood and country. However, they are willing to work for social change. 72% of those surveyed see themselves as a professional in ten years, while 69% see themselves working or studying in ten years’ time. It should be noted that social inequality, social practices, context and culture place limits on their social wellbeing. Therefore, we propose a model of social intervention, implemented by social management, where they are the ones that take decisions concerning their future based on cumulative economic, social, cultural and symbolic capital.El artículo de investigación tiene como objetivo analizar las opiniones de adolescentes en situación de riesgo por la violencia y delincuencia en Xalapa, Poza Rica, Puerto de Veracruz y Coatzacoalcos, municipios ubicados en el estado de Veracruz, México. El trabajo de campo fue realizado en polígonos en situación de pobreza determinados por la Secretaría de Desarrollo Social. Para realizar la investigación se hizo un muestreo en escuelas de primarias y secundarias ubicadas en las zonas de estudio. En el estudio participaron 434 adolescentes de edades entre 10 y 14 años. La estrategia de análisis de los datos fue descriptiva y correlacional. La información fue analizada con el software SPSS versión 25. Encontramos que las y los adolescentes identifican de manera clara los problemas en la familia, escuela, colonia y país, sin embargo, están dispuestos a trabajar por un cambio social. El 72% de las y los encuestados se mira en diez años como profesionista, el 69 % en diez años se mira trabajando o estudiando. Cabe señalar que, la desigualdad social, las prácticas sociales, el contexto y la cultura limitan su bienestar social. Por lo anterior, planteamos un modelo de intervención social desde la gerencia social, donde ellos sean quienes tomen decisiones para su futuro a partir del capital económico, social, cultural y simbólico acumulado

El quehacer del farmacéutico en relación con la farmacovigilancia

La Farmacovigilancia es una responsabilidad compartida entre el paciente, los médicos tratantes, las autoridades sanitarias y toda el área de la salud, especialmente el regente de farmacia, que ejerce la actividad farmacéutica y presta la atención a los pacientes, orientándolos en el uso racional y adecuado de los medicamentos y así evitar o prevenir posibles eventos adversos relacionados con los medicamentos por errores en la dispensación de estos. Como futuros tecnólogos en regencia de farmacia se debe fortalecer conocimientos, actitudes e información que se da a los pacientes a la hora de realizar la dispensación de forma precisa y contando con un control de prevención y vigilancia activa en el uso de los medicamentos. Se debe de concientizar al paciente en mejorar su calidad de vida cumpliendo con las prescripciones médicas, enfocándonos que el paciente se adhiera al tratamiento farmacológico y así obtener excelentes resultados, que mediante estos se pueden evidenciar los posibles problemas relacionados con los medicamentos y en caso tal se puedan reportar y corregir a tiempo. La farmacovigilancia vigila los eventos adversos a los medicamentos, reacciones adversas a medicamentos y problemas relacionados con los medicamentos. Ayuda a regular las medidas relacionadas con la autorización de la comercialización de medicamentos nuevos y de esta forma vigilar las posibles apariciones de efectos adversos indeseados después que el medicamento sale al mercado y así se pueda identificar interacciones, problemas relacionados y reacciones adversas con los medicamentos, que no fueron visibles durante la fase preclínica. Este trabajo nos ayuda a detectar las posibles interacciones medicamentosas que puedan generar problemas relacionados con la seguridad, necesidad y efectividad de los medicamentos.Pharmacovigilance is a responsibility shared between the patient, the treating physicians, the health authorities, and the entire health area, especially the pharmacy manager, who exercises the pharmaceutical activity and provides care to patients, guiding them in the rational use and of medications and thus avoid or prevent possible adverse events related to medications due to errors in their dispensing. As future technologists in pharmacy regency, knowledge, attitudes, and information that are given to patients should be strengthened when dispensing accurately and counting on prevention control and active surveillance in the use of drugs. The patient should be made aware of improving their quality of life by complying with medical prescriptions, focusing on the patient adhering to pharmacological treatment and thus obtain excellent results, which can reveal possible problems related to medications and in such case can be reported and corrected in time. Pharmacovigilance monitors adverse drug events, adverse drug reaction, and drug related problems. It helps to regulate the measures related to the authorization of the marketing of new drugs and in this way monitor the possible occurrences of unwanted adverse effects after the drug goes on the market and thus can identify interactions, related problems, and adverse reactions with the drugs. that were not visible during the preclinical phase. This work helps us to detect possible drug interactions that may generate problems related to the safety, necessity, and effectiveness of drugs

Colombian consensus recommendations for diagnosis, management and treatment of the infection by SARS-COV-2/ COVID-19 in health care facilities - Recommendations from expert´s group based and informed on evidence

La Asociación Colombiana de Infectología (ACIN) y el Instituto de Evaluación de Nuevas Tecnologías de la Salud (IETS) conformó un grupo de trabajo para desarrollar recomendaciones informadas y basadas en evidencia, por consenso de expertos para la atención, diagnóstico y manejo de casos de Covid 19. Estas guías son dirigidas al personal de salud y buscar dar recomendaciones en los ámbitos de la atención en salud de los casos de Covid-19, en el contexto nacional de Colombia

Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Multiancestry analysis of the HLA locus in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases uncovers a shared adaptive immune response mediated by HLA-DRB1*04 subtypes

Across multiancestry groups, we analyzed Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) associations in over 176,000 individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) versus controls. We demonstrate that the two diseases share the same protective association at the HLA locus. HLA-specific fine-mapping showed that hierarchical protective effects of HLA-DRB1*04 subtypes best accounted for the association, strongest with HLA-DRB1*04:04 and HLA-DRB1*04:07, and intermediary with HLA-DRB1*04:01 and HLA-DRB1*04:03. The same signal was associated with decreased neurofibrillary tangles in postmortem brains and was associated with reduced tau levels in cerebrospinal fluid and to a lower extent with increased Aβ42. Protective HLA-DRB1*04 subtypes strongly bound the aggregation-prone tau PHF6 sequence, however only when acetylated at a lysine (K311), a common posttranslational modification central to tau aggregation. An HLA-DRB1*04-mediated adaptive immune response decreases PD and AD risks, potentially by acting against tau, offering the possibility of therapeutic avenues

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.
