The reality of acoustic power emitted by therapeutic ultrasound equipment: a revision
The safety and efficiency of ultrasonic therapy may be compromised if the outlet power on the tranducer differs considerably from the value indicated on the equipment panel. This fact may be seen in the various publications which approach the referenced theme, where various studies determine that over 50% of equipment in routine use in clinics and physiotherapy departments are out of the specifications recommended by the International Electrotechinical Commission (IEC). This occurs as a result of the non regulation of technical production standards, the wear of the equipment itself in use and by the non adoption of routine metrological procedures on the part of the physiotherapist. The precision of the acoustic intensity would enable a more efficient therapy, besides the reproduction of protocols already defined in literature. Another important factor to be pointed out is the material used for coupling the ultrasonic transducer, where of the various means utilized, some propiciate the atenuation of irradiated energy. This revision intends to update the professional therapeutic ultrasound user, as well as make him aware of the need for adopting metrological measures for the equipment in use as routine practice.
New flavone from the leaves of Neea theifera (Nyctaginaceae)
Neea theifera Oerst. (Nyctaginaceae) is widely used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcers and inflammation. Phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Neea theifera afforded the isolation of the new flavone luteolin-7-O-[2″-O-(5‴-O-feruloyl)-β-D-apiofuranosyl]- β-D-glucopyranoside (1) besides the eight-known compounds vitexin, isovitexin, isoorientin, orientin, vicenin-2, chrysoeriol, apigenin and luteolin. Their chemical identification was established by NMR spectroscopic methods including 2D-NMR, as well as UV and ESI-MS analyses. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química
COMPARAÇÃO MICROBIOLÓGICA ENTRE MEMBRANAS AMNIÓTICAS HUMANAS COLETADAS EM PARTOS VAGINAIS E CESARIANAS – PROJETO PILOTO
Objective: The amniotic membrane, a thin membrane, may be used as a temporary cover on deep burns. The objective of this study is to identify the differences regarding bacterial contamination between membranes of vaginal and cesarean deliveries, as well as to assess the possibility of the clinical use of stored membranes.Methods: Twelve membranes were obtained from women submitted to vaginal and cesarean deliveries at the Obstetric Center of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. Each amniotic membrane was stored in five different flasks containing a physiological solution. Samples were obtained from these flasks for analysis on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. These samples were tested for bacterial contamination, analyzing its relation to time of storage and type of delivery. This is a pilot study with a transversal design.Results: The comparison between types of delivery yielded a relative risk of contamination in vaginal delivery (RR) of 2.67 (95% CI: 1.09-6.52) and no significance (P = 0.08). No contamination was found on day 1 flasks.Conclusion: All membranes derived from vaginal deliveries ended up showing bacterial contamination during the storage period, which lead to a theoretical unavailability for its use on Amniotic Membrane Banks.
Elliptic flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb
collisions at 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron
Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region
(||<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2< < 5.0 GeV/. The
elliptic flow signal v, measured using the 4-particle correlation method,
averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 0.002
(stat) 0.004 (syst) in the 40-50% centrality class. The differential
elliptic flow v reaches a maximum of 0.2 near = 3
GeV/. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV, the elliptic flow
increases by about 30%. Some hydrodynamic model predictions which include
viscous corrections are in agreement with the observed increase.Comment: 10 pages, 4 captioned figures, published version, figures at
