The principal stratigraphic characteristics from severa1 per- mian oatcrops from the Bordes del Macizo Central and Cor- dillera Ibérica are described here. The comparative study of these series, as well as the data apported by previous works allow certain conclusions about development of the sedimen- tation during the Permian and the limit between that system and the Trias
Childhood is shortened by the activity that adults subject children and adolescence is extended artificially, because the period of psychological and economic dependency does not coincide with the physical autonomy which is consolidated at puberty. Morphometric and genetic analysis as proof of the existence of two sturgeon species in the Guadalquivir river
Morphometric and genetic methods were used
to identify two sturgeon species, Acipenser naccarii Bo-
naparte, 1836, and A. sturio Linnaeus, 1758, captured in
some of the principal rivers of the Iberian Peninsula,
including the Guadalquivir. After measuring 25 Iberian
specimens from a ®shery and several Spanish and Por-
tuguese museums and applying stepwise discriminant
analysis (SDA), four specimens preserved in di erent
museums [two specimens from the Guadalquivir river
(EBD-8173 and EBD-8174), one specimen from the
Tagus river (MUC1) and one specimen from the
Mondego river (MUC46B)], as well as ®ve specimens
captured in the Guadalquivir river in the 1940s but not
preserved (CM1, CM2, CM3, CM4 and CM5), were
identi®ed as A. naccarii. After cloning and character-
isation of a satellite-DNA family, HindIII, from
A. naccarii genome, its absence from the genome of
A. sturio was determined. Using this satellite-DNA as a
genetic marker and by means of dot-blotting, we dem-
onstrate that the DNA of the two specimens captured
during the mid-1970s in the Guadalquivir river cross-
hybridised with HindIII satellite-DNA sequences of
A. naccarii. We conclude that A. naccarii is autochtho-
nous to the Iberian Peninsula and is not, as was previ-
ously believed, endemic to the Adriatic Sea
Evaluation of macroscopic lesions of different lung lobes in swine using a percentage classification model
Respiratory diseases in pigs have a great economic impact, considering it is one of the main problems in intensive swine
production. The objective of this study was to macroscopically evaluate the different pulmonary lobes in a processing plant
located center-west of Risaralda, using a percentage qualification model. Through a descriptive study, 358 lungs were evaluated during the evisceration phase, the specimens came from 9 lots of different farms. Data was collected according to the degree of macroscopic lesion observed for each of the pulmonary lobes in percentages. With this data, averages were taken for each of the lobes and compared between the total of samples observed
and for each of the lots. In addition, more specific lesions were evaluated on a scale of 0-5 as indicators of pleurisy and scarring. The analysis of the macroscopic observations showed that the majority of the lungs, presented some degree of lesion with an 85% (305/358) while only 15% (53/358) showed no type of lesion. 13% (43/358) presented lesions indicative of pleurisy and 71% (253/358) showed scarring. The comparison of the lesion averages between the different pulmonary lobes showed that the most affected was the right cardiac lobe with an average value of 2.10% while the least affected was the accessory lobe with an average value of 0.97%. In this study it was found that the right and left cardiac lobes were the most affected out of the totality of lungs
evaluated, these results can be related to the respiratory signs, the health status and the productive parameters of the different
batches in the farm, helping to determine a presumptive or final etiological diagnosis. This shows that the percentage evaluation
method could be a quick and effective tool for the study of postmortem lesions in processing plants
Incidence, in-hospital case-fatality rates, and management practices in Puerto Ricans hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction
OBJECTIVE: There are extremely limited data on minority populations, especially Hispanics, describing the clinical epidemiology of acute coronary disease. The aim of this study is to examine the incidence rate of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), in-hospital case-fatality rate (CFR), and management practices among residents of greater San Juan (Puerto Rico) who were hospitalized with an initial AMI.
METHODS: Our trained study staff reviewed and independently validated the medical records of patients who had been hospitalized with possible AMI at any of the twelve hospitals located in greater San Juan during calendar year 2007.
RESULTS: The incidence rate (# per 100,000 population) of 1,415 patients hospitalized with AMI increased with advancing age and were significantly higher for older patients for men (198) than they were for women (134). The average age of the study population was 64 years, and women comprised 45% of the study sample. Evidence-based cardiac therapies, e.g., aspirin, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, and statins, were used with 60% of the hospitalized patients, and women were less likely than men to have received these therapies (59% vs. 65%) or to have undergone interventional cardiac procedures (47% vs. 59%) (p \u3c 0.05). The in-hospital CFR increased with advancing age and were higher for women (8.6%) than they were for men (6.0%) (p \u3c 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Efforts are needed to reduce the magnitude of AMI, enhance the use of evidence-based cardiac therapies, reduce possible gender disparities, and improve the short-term prognoses of Puerto Rican patients hospitalized with an initial AMI
Mitochondrial DNA disturbances and deregulated expression of oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial fusion proteins in sporadic inclusion body myositis
Sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) is one of the most common myopathies in elderly people. Mitochondrial abnormalities at the histological level are present in these patients. We hypothesize that mitochondrial dysfunction may play a role in disease aetiology. We took the following measurements of muscle and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 30 sIBM patients and 38 age-and gender-paired controls: mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions, amount of mtDNA and mtRNA, mitochondrial protein synthesis, mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) complex I and IV enzymatic activity, mitochondrial mass, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dynamics (mitofusin 2 and optic atrophy 1 levels). Depletion of mtDNA was present in muscle from sIBM patients and PBMCs showed deregulated expression of mitochondrial proteins in oxidative phosphorylation. MRC complex IV/citrate synthase activity was significantly decreased in both tissues and mitochondrial dynamics were affected in muscle. Depletion of mtDNA was significantly more severe in patients with mtDNA deletions, which also presented deregulation of mitochondrial fusion proteins. Imbalance in mitochondrial dynamics in muscle was associated with increased mitochondrial genetic disturbances (both depletion and deletions), demonstrating that proper mitochondrial turnover is essential for mitochondrial homoeostasis and muscle function in these patients
Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the baryon
A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb collected by LHCb at and 8 TeV, is used
to reconstruct , decays. Using the , decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute
lifetime of the baryon are measured to be \begin{align*}
\frac{\tau_{\Omega_b^-}}{\tau_{\Xi_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\
\tau_{\Omega_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the
uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for
only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference,
, and the corresponding mass, which
yields \begin{align*} m_{\Omega_b^-}-m_{\Xi_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm
MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{\Omega_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2.
\end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, All figures and tables, along with any

Measurement of the lifetime
Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ,
collected by the LHCb experiment in collisions at centre-of-mass energies
of 7 and 8 TeV, the effective lifetime in the
decay mode, , is measured to be ps. Assuming
conservation, corresponds to the lifetime of the light
mass eigenstate. This is the first measurement of the effective
lifetime in this decay mode.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and
