    THE MENTAL IMAGE OF AMERICAN SERIES AND FILMS AMONG ARAB YOUTH: A FIELD STUDY ON THE JORDANIAN AND KUWAITI YOUTH

    This study aimed at identifying the mental image of American series and films among Jordanian and Kuwaiti youth and the extent of their impact on the sample. The study was conducted on a sample of 1827 individuals. The study showed that the category of watching for 2-3 hours ranked first at a rate of 46.6%, and individual viewing ranked first by 42.3%, and thus the series and films features were high. The films which are bearing the quality of excitement are ranked first at a mean of 4.26, and the courage quality of some heroes came in the first place at a mean of 3.99 .The American series and films which achieved revenues in millions came in the first place at a mean of 4.24. The study showed that there are significant statistical relationships among the variables: age, place of residence, citizenship, and the features of American series and films

    The discovery of fossilised struthious eggshell fragments on outcrops of the Marsawdad Formation, Rub’ Al-Khali, Oman, permits estimation of the age of the deposits, indicating correlation to the Late Miocene (Turolian-Ventian: Tortonian-Messinian) ca 8-7 Ma.     Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study

    Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.     Enhancing Advocacy for Eye Care at National Levels: What Steps to Take for the Next Decade?

    The global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness by the year 2020-(VISION 2020- The Right to Sight), established in 1999, is a partnership of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), governments, bilateral organizations, corporate bodies and the World Health Organization. The goal is to eliminate the major causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020. Significant progress has been made in the last decade. For example, the adoption of three major World Health Assembly resolutions (WHA 56.26, 59.25 and 62.1) requesting governments to increase support and funding for the prevention of blindness and eye care. Additionally, the approval of the VISION 2020 declaration, development of plans and establishment of prevention of blindness committees and a designation of a coordinator by most participating countries represent other major achievements. Furthermore there has been increased political and professional commitment to the prevention of visual impairment and an increase in the provision of high-quality, sustainable eye care. Most of these achievements have been attributed to the advocacy efforts of VISION 2020 at the international level. The full success of this global initiative will likely depend on the extent to which the WHA resolutions are implemented in each country. However, most ratifying countries have not moved forward with implementation of these resolutions. To date, only few countries have shown consistent government support and funding for eye care pursuant to the resolutions. One of the main reasons for this may be inadequate and inappropriate advocacy for eye care at the national level. As such it is believed that the success of VISION 2020 in the next decade will depend on intense advocacy campaigns at national levels. This review identified some of the countries and health programs that have had fruitful advocacy efforts, to determine the factors that dictated success. The review highlights the factors of successful advocacy in two countries (Australia and Pakistan) that secured continued government support. The review further explores the achievements of the HIV/AIDs control network advocacy in securing global and national government support. Common factors for successful advocacy at the national level were identified to include generation of evidence data and effective utilization of the data with an appropriate forum and media to develop a credible relationship with prominent decision makers. Aligning eye care programming to the broad health and development agendas was a useful advocacy effort. Also a broad all-encompassing coalition of all stakeholders provides a solid platform for effective and persistent advocacy for government support of eye care

    Characteristics of oxyfuel and air-fuel combustion in an industrial water tube boiler

    The characteristics of oxyfuel combustion and air–fuel combustion in the furnace of a typical industrial water tube boiler using methane as the operating fuel are investigated. Two oxyfuel cases are considered. The analysis is conducted for two oxyfuel cases that correspond to 21% O2 and 29% O2 in the oxidizer mixture (O2 + CO2). A renormalized group (RNG) turbulence model and the eddy dissipation model are utilized in the present work to provide the turbulence characteristics and the production rate of species. The solution of the radiative transfer equation was obtained using the discrete ordinates radiation model. The set of governing equations and the boundary conditions are solved numerically using Fluent computational fluid dynamics code considering a single-step reaction kinetics model for methane–oxyfuel combustion. Comparison of both oxyfuel combustion and air–fuel combustion indicates that the temperature levels are reduced in oxyfuel combustion. The results show that the temperature levels are greatly reduced as the percentage of recirculated CO2 is increased. It is concluded that the flame propagation speed in the CO2 environment is lower than that in N2. It is found that the natural gas and oxygen consumption rates are slower in oxyfuel combustion relative to air–fuel combustion. Heat transfer from the burnt gases to the water jacket along the different surfaces of the furnace is calculated. It is shown that the energy absorbed is much lower in the case of oxyfuel combustion along all surfaces except for the end part of the furnace close to the furnace rear wall. However, the same performance of the methane-oxy-flames is expected by increasing the oxygen concentration slightly above 29%

    Brain infarction following elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with sickle cell disease and previously undetected Moyamoya syndrome

    Objective: We report a 7 year-old boy, known case of sickle cell disease, who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones. He sustained brain insult due to undiagnosed MoyaMoya syndrome. The purpose of this report is to familiarize the healthcare community with similar events and discuss possible plans/recommendations for future similar cases. Method: Case report and review of the English-language literatures (using PubMed, Ovid, and Proquest databases). Results: Case of complicated MoyaMoya syndrome sustained brain insult postoperatively in a 7 year-old boy, with sickle cell disease and gallstones. Conclusion: Early onset of MoyaMoya syndrome related stroke postoperatively after laparoscopic cholecystectomy is difficult to be assessed immediately. Acute stroke is an infrequent disease of pediatric age group patients. MoyaMoya is a rare cerebrovascular disease of unknown etiology. Our patient is 7 year-old male child who presented immediately postoperatively with abnormal movement of right upper and lower limbs and right upper limb weakness, and no history of MoyaMoya syndrome, which is rare, but important cause of stroke in children. Cerebral revascularization surgery leads to favorable outcome. The present case highlights the importance of considering ''MoyaMoya syndrome'' in sickle cell disease patients who are going for surgery irrespective of their age group.     Spectral Signature Characterization and Remote Mapping of Oman Exotic Limestones for Industrial Rock Resource Assessment

    This study demonstrates the capability of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor data to remotely map industrial carbonate rocks known as the ‘Oman exotics’ of the Sultanate of Oman. We measured reflectance spectra of marble using a PIMA™ spectrometer and studied their spectral absorptions distinguishing calcite from spectral absorptions of dolomite of the same region. The spectral band 8 of ASTER is processed by simple decorrelation stretch image processing method to map the exotic limestone rock of the Nakhl region, Oman. Results showed that carbonate rocks displayed distinctive tonal variation on the image. A comparative study with the spectral band 7 of Landsat 7 (ETM+) does not discriminate the calcite-bearing marbles and associated carbonate formations in the studied area. ASTER data were also processed by the application of the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC), Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and Spectral Information Divergence (SID) image classification algorithms. The results were assessed by the production of a confusion matrix. The study shows the capability of visible near infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral bands of the ASTER sensor and potential of the image processing methods to remotely identify industrial carbonate rocks and we recommend this technique to similar regions of the world

    Extraction and Characterization of Fiber and Cellulose from Ethiopian Linseed Straw: Determination of Retting Period and Optimization of Multi-Step Alkaline Peroxide Process

    Flax is a commercial crop grown in many parts of the world both for its seeds and for its fibers. The seed-based flax variety (linseed) is considered less for its fiber after the seed is extracted. In this study, linseed straw was utilized and processed to extract fiber and cellulose through optimization of retting time and a multi-step alkaline peroxide extraction process using the Taguchi design of experiment (DOE). Effects of retting duration on fiber properties as well as effects of solvent concentration, reaction temperature, and time on removal of non-cellulosic fiber components were studied using the gravimetric technique, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal studies. Based on these findings, retting for 216 h at room temperature should offer adequate retting efficiency and fiber characteristics; 70% cellulose yield was extracted successfully from linseed straw fiber using 75% ethanol–toluene at 98 °C for 4 h, 6% NaOH at 75 °C for 30 min, and 6% H2O2 at 90 °C for 120 min

    Influence of Age and Harvesting Season on The Tensile Strength of Bamboo-Fibre-Reinforced Epoxy Composites

    The purpose of this study was to measure the strength of various bamboo fibres and their epoxy composites based on the bamboo ages and harvesting seasons. Three representative samples of 1–3-year-old bamboo plants were collected in November and February. Bamboo fibres and their epoxy composites had the highest tensile strength and Young’s modulus at 2 years old and in November. The back-calculated tensile strengths using the “rule of mixture” of Injibara, Kombolcha, and Mekaneselam bamboo-fibre-reinforced epoxy composites were 548 ± 40–422 ± 33 MPa, 496 ± 16–339 ± 30 MPa, and 541 ± 21–399 ± 55 MPa, whereas the back-calculated Young’s moduli using the “rule of mixture” were 48 ± 5–37 ± 3 GPa, 36 ± 4–25 ± 3 GPa, and 44 ± 2–40 ± 2 GPa, respectively. The tensile strengths of the Injibara, Kombolcha, and Mekaneselam bamboo-fibre-reinforced epoxy composites were 227 ± 14–171 ± 22 MPa, 255 ± 18–129 ± 15 MPa, and 206 ± 19–151 ± 11 MPa, whereas Young’s moduli were 21 ± 2.9–16 ± 4.24 GPa, 18 ± 0.8–11 ± 0.51 GPa, and 18 ± 0.85–16 ± 0.82 GPa respectively. The highest to the lowest tensile strengths and Young’s moduli of bamboo fibres and their epoxy composites were Injibara, Mekaneselam, and Kombolcha, which were the local regional area names from these fibres were extracted. The intended functional application of the current research study is the automobile industries of headliners, which substitute the conventional materials of glass fibres
