Search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of Higgs-like bosons.
A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2
AKT inhibition is associated with chemosensitisation in the pancreatic cancer cell line MIA-PaCa-2
Activation of the serine/threonine kinase AKT is common in pancreatic cancer; inhibition of which sensitises cells to the apoptotic effect of chemotherapy. Of the various downstream targets of AKT, we examined activation of the NF-kappaB transcription factor and subsequent transcriptional regulation of BCL-2 gene family in pancreatic cancer cells. Inhibition of either phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase or AKT led to a decreased protein level of the antiapoptotic gene BCL-2 and an increased protein level of the proapoptotic gene BAX. Furthermore, inhibition of AKT decreased the function of NF-kappaB, which is capable of transcriptional regulation of the BCL-2 gene. Inhibiting this pathway had little effect on the basal level of apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells, but increased the apoptotic effect of chemotherapy. The antiapoptotic effect of AKT activation in pancreatic cancer cells may involve transcriptional induction of a profile of BCL-2 proteins that confer resistance to apoptosis; alteration of this balance allows sensitisation to the apoptotic effect of chemotherapy
Search for CP violation in D+→ϕπ+ and D+s→K0Sπ+ decays
A search for CP violation in D + → ϕπ + decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP -violating asymmetry is measured to be (−0.04 ± 0.14 ± 0.14)% for candidates with K − K + mass within 20 MeV/c 2 of the ϕ meson mass. A search for a CP -violating asymmetry that varies across the ϕ mass region of the D + → K − K + π + Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the D+s→K0Sπ+ decay is measured to be (0.61 ± 0.83 ± 0.14)%

Comparison of Whole Blood and Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell Gene Expression for Evaluation of the Perioperative Inflammatory Response in Patients with Advanced Heart Failure
Background: Heart failure (HF) prevalence is increasing in the United States.
Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) therapy is an option for Advanced HF
(AdHF) patients. Perioperatively, multiorgan dysfunction (MOD) is linked to the
effects of device implantation, augmented by preexisting HF. Early recognition of
MOD allows for better diagnosis, treatment, and risk prediction. Gene expression
profiling (GEP) was used to evaluate clinical phenotypes of peripheral blood
mononuclear cells (PBMC) transcriptomes obtained from patients’ blood samples.
Whole blood (WB) samples are clinically more feasible, but their performance in
comparison to PBMC samples has not been determined.
Methods: We collected blood samples from 31 HF patients (57¡15 years old)
undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and 7 healthy age-matched controls, between
2010 and 2011, at a single institution. WB and PBMC samples were collected at a
single timepoint postoperatively (median day 8 postoperatively) (25–75% IQR 7–14
days) and subjected to Illumina single color Human BeadChip HT12 v4 whole
genome expression array analysis. The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment
(SOFA) score was used to characterize the severity of MOD into low (# 4 points),
intermediate (5–11), and high ($ 12) risk categories correlating with GEP.
Results: Results indicate that the direction of change in GEP of individuals with
MOD as compared to controls is similar when determined from PBMC versus WB.
The main enriched terms by Gene Ontology (GO) analysis included those involved
in the inflammatory response, apoptosis, and other stress response related
pathways. The data revealed 35 significant GO categories and 26 pathways
overlapping between PBMC and WB. Additionally, class prediction using machine
learning tools demonstrated that the subset of significant genes shared by PBMC
and WB are sufficient to train as a predictor separating the SOFA groups.
Conclusion: GEP analysis of WB has the potential to become a clinical tool for
immune-monitoring in patients with MO
Winning Fights Induces Hyperaggression via the Action of the Biogenic Amine Octopamine in Crickets
Winning an agonistic interaction against a conspecific is known to heighten aggressiveness, but the underlying events and mechanism are poorly understood. We quantified the effect of experiencing successive wins on aggression in adult male crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) by staging knockout tournaments and investigated its dependence on biogenic amines by treatment with amine receptor antagonists. For an inter-fight interval of 5 min, fights between winners escalated to higher levels of aggression and lasted significantly longer than the preceding round. This winner effect is transient, and no longer evident for an inter-fight interval of 20 min, indicating that it does not result from selecting individuals that were hyper-aggressive from the outset. A winner effect was also evident in crickets that experienced wins without physical exertion, or that engaged in fights that were interrupted before a win was experienced. Finally, the winner effect was abolished by prior treatment with epinastine, a highly selective octopamine receptor blocker, but not by propranolol, a ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist, nor by yohimbine, an insect tyramine receptor blocker nor by fluphenazine an insect dopamine-receptor blocker. Taken together our study in the cricket indicates that the physical exertion of fighting, together with some rewarding aspect of the actual winning experience, leads to a transient increase in aggressive motivation via activation of the octopaminergic system, the invertebrate equivalent to the adrenergic system of vertebrates

Search for the rare decay D0→μ+μ-
A search for the rare decay D →μ μ is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9fb , of pp collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of events is consistent with the background expectations and corresponds to an upper limit of B(D0→μ+μ-)<6.2(7.6)×10-9 at 90% (95%) confidence level. This result represents an improvement of more than a factor twenty with respect to previous measurements. © 2013 CERN. 0 + - -

Search for Bc+ decays to two charm mesons
A search for decays of B c + mesons to two charm mesons is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb −1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The decays considered are B c + →D (s) (⁎)+ D‾ (⁎)0 and B c + →D (s) (⁎)+ D (⁎)0 , which are normalised to high-yield B + →D (s) + D‾ 0 decays. No evidence for a signal is found and limits are set on twelve B c + decay modes

Measurements of CP asymmetries in charmless four-body Λb0 and Ξb0 decays
Abstract: A search for CP violation in charmless four-body decays of Λb0 and Ξb0 baryons with a proton and three charged mesons in the final state is performed. To cancel out production and detection charge-asymmetry effects, the search is carried out by measuring the difference between the CP asymmetries in a charmless decay and in a decay with an intermediate charmed baryon with the same particles in the final state. The data sample used was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3fb-1. A total of 18 CP asymmetries are considered, either accounting for the full phase space of the decays or exploring specific regions of the decay kinematics. No significant CP-violation effect is observed in any of the measurements
