    Chinese Economic Challenges to the World Trade Organization: Separating Myth from Reality

    China has taken the world with a different angle; an angle that kept China mostly behind its conservative mercantilist restrictions and access to foreign investors largely remained actively initiated. Even though China was admitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, and remained an observer to the General Agreement to Tariff and Trade (GATT), cost of receiving membership meant extreme modifications to Chinese system of economy. Modifications that required China to allow access and tariff concessions to global community and demanded Chinese nationalist mercantilist designs to be affable to international standards. This however, never meant that China would stop expanding, or at least take a recess from its economic augmentation. WTO quickly saw China rise to a point where even though it remained compliant to international economic norms, it still remained a formidable rebel to set patterns, tacitly compelling WTO and other international economic forums to feel impractical, if not impotent. Chinese economic investments, together with its dominance on international relations, has often raised questions on its intentions into becoming a member of WTO. It is often miscalculated that China intends to implode WTO from within by introducing a change in the international economic system through sheer pressure or somehow, China is strategizing to manipulate WTO as a nascent member in order to introduce another form of global competition against members that are already in antagonism towards China

    Exploring the Feasibility of Integrating Mental Health into a Family Planning Program in low-resource settings

    Introduction: Mental health challenges remain a pressing issue, underscored by the glaring gap between the elevated demand and the scarce resources. Research has highlighted the effectiveness of integrating mental health services with primary care services, particularly in low-resource settings. Purpose: The objective of this research was to evaluate the perceived implications and feasibility of integrating basic mental health services into an existing community-based family planning initiative in Pakistan. By adopting a community-driven and co-produced methodology, our study not only ensured a deeper resonance with local needs but also paved the way for a sustainable and transformative uptake of mental health services in low-resource settings. This co-produced strategy, anchored in mutual collaboration and shared expertise with the community, promises a more holistic, enduring, and adaptive integration of essential health services within community frameworks.Methodology: This study utilized a qualitative research approach to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the program's feasibility and potential for expansion. Interview tools and guides, tailored to the regional language, were developed by the Research Associate to gather insights from the lady health workers involved in delivering the intervention, as well as from the clients. Overall, our team conducted 24 interviews, of which 9 were with the lady health workers and 15 with clients. The interviews were facilitated by the Research Associate and a Psychologist.Results: Utilizing the socio-ecological model, we thematically analyzed factors at individual, interpersonal, and community levels that support or hinder the integration of mental health services with existing community-based programmes. We also examined the intervention's impact on its users and the healthcare providers.Our analysis underscores the significant potential of integrating mental health services into existing community-based health programmes, such as family planning, in low-resource settings. Predominant themes highlighted women's willingness to use these services, influenced by strong relationships and trust in the lady health workers, ease of access to services, and community support. Identified barriers to integration included prevailing poverty, a preference for direct financial incentives in addition to counseling, confidentiality concerns in tight-knit communities, and the lingering stigma surrounding mental health.Conclusion: Our findings highlight the value of community collaboration in healthcare, particularly in low-resource settings. The co-production approach blends professional guidance with local insights, fostering community ownership and enhancing program sustainability. As the first to merge mental health with family planning in Pakistan, our research suggests that future health initiatives can greatly benefit from community-driven methods, leading to more sustainable and transformative health outcomes

    Assessment of Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation among Pharmacy Students of Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir

    Introduction: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the most important lifesaving technique in several emergency situations such as cardiac arrest. In future, being part of health care professionals, pharmacy students are deemed to possess basic skills and expertise which are required to perform CPR. Objective: To access the knowledge of cardiopulmonary among pharmacy students of Mirpur Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Methods: It was a questionnaire-based, descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted among 4th and 5th year students of two Pharmacy institutes of Mirpur AJ&K from November 2018 to January 2019. A pre-tested questionnaire from previous study was used to collect data. It comprised of 13 dichotomous questions with “Yes/No” options, regarding knowledge of CPR. Descriptive statistics was used to unfold the demographic characteristics. Inferential statistics (Kruskal Wallis and Man Whitney) tests were used for evaluating difference between dependent continuous variables and independent variables and Chi-square was applied to determine difference between grouped variables. P-value of less than 0.05 is considered significant. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Result: Overall, 131 out of 150(response rate= 92%) students participated in current study. Gender distribution among the participants was almost equal with 66 males (50.4%) males and 65 (49.6%) females took part in current study. Participants of the age group 21-23 years (n=88, 67.2%) were dominant. Only few students (n=23, 17.6%) reported to have taken training in CPR previously. Eighty-eight (66.7%) had average knowledge of CPR. No significant differences among male and female, 4th and 5th year students of both the institutes were found. Conclusion: The study revealed that knowledge level of CPR is adequate in most of the students of pharmacy. However, further improvements are required to perform CPR in an efficient manner. Thus, training in CPR should be mandatory in the pharmacy curriculum

    EVALUATION OF CYTOTOXIC ACTIVITY OF DICHOLOROMETHANE (DCM) AND METHANOL (MEOH) EXTRACT OF ROOT BARK OF CAPPARIS DECIDUA

    The present study was conducted to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of different extracts of root bark of Capparis decidua (Capparidaceae). The root barks of Capparis decidua were collected from village Kirri khaisore Tehsil Pahar pur, Dera Ismail Khan; shade dried and ground into fine powder. The weighed plant material was then extracted with dichloromethane and methanol in triplicate for 72 hours by the process of successive maceration. The filtrate obtained was concentrated under reduced pressure at 30 °C using rotary evaporator. Brine shrimp lethality bioassays and MTT colorimetric assay were carried out on the extracts to assess the cytotoxic activity. Dichloromethane extract showed moderate brine shrimp lethality activity, while this activity was not shown by methanol extract. Both extract showed no cytotoxic activity.     UV-Accelerated Photocatalytic Degradation of Pesticide over Magnetite and Cobalt Ferrite Decorated Graphene Oxide Composite

    Pesticides are one of the main organic pollutants as they are highly toxic and extensively used worldwide. The reclamation of wastewater containing pesticides is of utmost importance. For this purpose, GO-doped metal ferrites (GO-FeO and GO-CoFeO) were prepared and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. Photocatalytic potentials of catalysts were investigated against acetamiprid's degradation. A detailed review of the parametric study revealed that efficiency of overall Fenton's process relies on the combined effects of contributing factors, i.e., pH, initial oxidant concentration, catalyst dose, contact time, and acetamiprid load. ~97 and ~90% degradation of the acetamiprid was achieved by GO-CoFeO and GO-FeO, respectively during the first hour under UV radiations at optimized reaction conditions. At optimized conditions (i.e., pH:3, [HO]: 14.5 mM (for FeO, GO-FeO and GO-CoFeO) and 21.75 mM (for CoFeO), catalysts: 100 mgL, time: 60min) the catalysts exhibited excellent performance, with high degradation rate, magnetic power, easy recovery at the end, and efficient reusability (up to 5 cycles without any considerable loss in catalytic activity). A high magnetic character offers its easy separation from aqueous systems using an external magnet. Moreover, the combined effects of experimental variables were assessed simultaneously and justified using response surface methodology (RSM).This research received no external funding

    Effect of early tranexamic acid administration on mortality, hysterectomy, and other morbidities in women with post-partum haemorrhage (WOMAN): an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Early administration of tranexamic acid reduces deaths due to bleeding in trauma patients. We aimed to assess the effects of early administration of tranexamic acid on death, hysterectomy, and other relevant outcomes in women with post-partum haemorrhage. Methods In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we recruited women aged 16 years and older with a clinical diagnosis of post-partum haemorrhage after a vaginal birth or caesarean section from 193 hospitals in 21 countries. We randomly assigned women to receive either 1 g intravenous tranexamic acid or matching placebo in addition to usual care. If bleeding continued after 30 min, or stopped and restarted within 24 h of the first dose, a second dose of 1 g of tranexamic acid or placebo could be given. Patients were assigned by selection of a numbered treatment pack from a box containing eight numbered packs that were identical apart from the pack number. Participants, care givers, and those assessing outcomes were masked to allocation. We originally planned to enrol 15 000 women with a composite primary endpoint of death from all-causes or hysterectomy within 42 days of giving birth. However, during the trial it became apparent that the decision to conduct a hysterectomy was often made at the same time as randomisation. Although tranexamic acid could influence the risk of death in these cases, it could not affect the risk of hysterectomy. We therefore increased the sample size from 15 000 to 20 000 women in order to estimate the effect of tranexamic acid on the risk of death from post-partum haemorrhage. All analyses were done on an intention-to-treat basis. This trial is registered with ISRCTN76912190 (Dec 8, 2008); ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00872469; and PACTR201007000192283. Findings Between March, 2010, and April, 2016, 20 060 women were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive tranexamic acid (n=10 051) or placebo (n=10 009), of whom 10 036 and 9985, respectively, were included in the analysis. Death due to bleeding was significantly reduced in women given tranexamic acid (155 [1·5%] of 10 036 patients vs 191 [1·9%] of 9985 in the placebo group, risk ratio [RR] 0·81, 95% CI 0·65–1·00; p=0·045), especially in women given treatment within 3 h of giving birth (89 [1·2%] in the tranexamic acid group vs 127 [1·7%] in the placebo group, RR 0·69, 95% CI 0·52–0·91; p=0·008). All other causes of death did not differ significantly by group. Hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (358 [3·6%] patients in the tranexamic acid group vs 351 [3·5%] in the placebo group, RR 1·02, 95% CI 0·88–1·07; p=0·84). The composite primary endpoint of death from all causes or hysterectomy was not reduced with tranexamic acid (534 [5·3%] deaths or hysterectomies in the tranexamic acid group vs 546 [5·5%] in the placebo group, RR 0·97, 95% CI 0·87-1·09; p=0·65). Adverse events (including thromboembolic events) did not differ significantly in the tranexamic acid versus placebo group. Interpretation Tranexamic acid reduces death due to bleeding in women with post-partum haemorrhage with no adverse effects. When used as a treatment for postpartum haemorrhage, tranexamic acid should be given as soon as possible after bleeding onset.     Measurements of production cross sections of the Higgs boson in the four-lepton final state in proton–proton collisions at S\sqrt{S} = 13 TeV

    Production cross sections of the Higgs boson are measured in the H -> ZZ -> 4l (l = e, mu) decay channel. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) is used. The signal strength modifier mu, defined as the ratio of the Higgs boson production rate in the 4l channel to the standard model (SM) expectation, is measured to be mu = 0.94 +/- 0.07 (stat)(-0.08)(+0.09) (syst) at a fixed value of m(H) = 125.38 GeV. The signal strength modifiers for the individual Higgs boson production modes are also reported. The inclusive fiducial cross section for the H -> 4l process is measured to be 2.84(-0.22)(+0.23) (stat)(-0.21)(+0.26) (syst) fb, which is compatible with the SM prediction of 2.84 +/- 0.15 fb for the same fiducial region. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs boson, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading associated jet are measured. A new set of cross section measurements in mutually exclusive categories targeted to identify production mechanisms and kinematical features of the events is presented. The results are in agreement with the SM predictions

    Search for new physics in top quark production with additional leptons in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV using effective field theory

    Events containing one or more top quarks produced with additional prompt leptons are used to search for new physics within the framework of an effective field theory (EFT). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The selected events are required to have either two leptons with the same charge or more than two leptons; jets, including identified bottom quark jets, are also required, and the selected events are divided into categories based on the multiplicities of these objects. Sixteen dimension-six operators that can affect processes involving top quarks produced with additional charged leptons are considered in this analysis. Constructed to target EFT effects directly, the analysis applies a novel approach in which the observed yields are parameterized in terms of the Wilson coefficients (WCs) of the EFT operators. A simultaneous fit of the 16 WCs to the data is performed and two standard deviation confidence intervals for the WCs are extracted; the standard model expectations for the WC values are within these intervals for all of the WCs probed.Peer reviewe

    Electron and photon reconstruction and identification with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

    The performance is presented of the reconstruction and identification algorithms for electrons and photons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The reported results are based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded in 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb(-1). Results obtained from lead-lead collision data collected at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV are also presented. Innovative techniques are used to reconstruct the electron and photon signals in the detector and to optimize the energy resolution. Events with electrons and photons in the final state are used to measure the energy resolution and energy scale uncertainty in the recorded events. The measured energy resolution for electrons produced in Z boson decays in proton-proton collision data ranges from 2 to 5%, depending on electron pseudorapidity and energy loss through bremsstrahlung in the detector material. The energy scale in the same range of energies is measured with an uncertainty smaller than 0.1 (0.3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in proton-proton collisions and better than 1(3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in heavy ion collisions. The timing resolution for electrons from Z boson decays with the full 2016-2018 proton-proton collision data set is measured to be 200 ps.Peer reviewe

    Measurement of the W gamma Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV and Constraints on Effective Field Theory Coefficients

    A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Peer reviewe
