    A Multiclassifier Approach for Drill Wear Prediction

    Classification methods have been widely used during last years in order to predict patterns and trends of interest in data. In present paper, a multiclassifier approach that combines the output of some of the most popular data mining algorithms is shown. The approach is based on voting criteria, by estimating the confidence distributions of each algorithm individually and combining them according to three different methods: confidence voting, weighted voting and majority voting. To illustrate its applicability in a real problem, the drill wear detection in machine-tool sector is addressed. In this study, the accuracy obtained by each isolated classifier is compared with the performance of the multiclassifier when characterizing the patterns of interest involved in the drilling process and predicting the drill wear. Experimental results show that, in general, false positives obtained by the classifiers can be slightly reduced by using the multiclassifier approach

    Soil and water bioengineering: practice and research needs for reconciling natural hazard control and ecological restoration

    Soil and water bioengineering is a technology that encourages scientists and practitioners to combine their knowledge and skills in the management of ecosystems with a common goal to maximize benefits to both man and the natural environment. It involves techniques that use plants as living building materials, for: (i) natural hazard control (e.g., soil erosion, torrential floods and landslides) and (ii) ecological restoration or nature-based re-introduction of species on degraded lands, river embankments, and disturbed environments. For a bioengineering project to be successful, engineers are required to highlight all the potential benefits and ecosystem services by documenting the technical, ecological, economic and social values. The novel approaches used by bioengineers raise questions for researchers and necessitate innovation from practitioners to design bioengineering concepts and techniques. Our objective in this paper, therefore, is to highlight the practice and research needs in soil and water bioengineering for reconciling natural hazard control and ecological restoration. Firstly, we review the definition and development of bioengineering technology, while stressing issues concerning the design, implementation, and monitoring of bioengineering actions. Secondly, we highlight the need to reconcile natural hazard control and ecological restoration by posing novel practice and research questions

    Improving Access to Primary and Pain Care for Patients Taking Opioids for Chronic Pain in Michigan: Recommendations from an Expert Panel

    This multidisciplinary expert panel was convened to generate recommendations to address the limited access to care that patients experience when taking opioids for chronic pain. Recent policies and guidelines instituted to reduce inappropriate opioid prescribing have had unintended consequences for the 5-8 million patients taking long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain in the U.S. As providers discontinue prescribing and turn away patients dependent on opioids, this population faces limited access to both primary and pain-related care. The root causes of this access issue can be attributed to several overarching barriers, including new opioid-related policies, payment models, a lack of care coordination, stigma, and racial biases. Over multiple rounds of deliberation, the panel brainstormed possible solutions, considering feasibility, impact, and importance, and ultimately ranked their final recommendations in order of implementation priority. The final list included 11 recommendations, from which three overarching themes emerged: 1. Improving care models to better support patients with chronic pain Three recommendations involved improving care models, including the top two: increasing reimbursement for the time needed to treat complex chronic pain and establishing coordinated care models that bundle payments for multimodal pain treatment. 2. Enhancing provider education and training Four recommendations involving provider education efforts received slightly lower rankings and included training on biopsychosocial factors of pain care and clarifying the continuum between physical dependency and opioid use disorder. 3. Implementing practices to reduce racial biases and inequities The remaining four recommendations address racial biases and inequities, ranging from standardizing pain management protocols to reduce bias to increasing recruitment and retention of providers from underrepresented racial minorities. Throughout the process, panelists emphasized the interconnectedness of their proposed solutions, and indicated that multiple approaches are likely needed to meaningfully improve access to care for this patient population. Importantly, though this panel was convened in Michigan, and its expertise grounded in Michigan’s healthcare ecosystem, there are millions of patients taking opioids for chronic pain across the country, and reports of limited access to care are not unique to Michigan.     Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive neutral pion production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

    We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive Pi0 production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The cross section was measured over a transverse momentum range of 1 < p_T < 17 GeV/c and found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry was measured in the range of 3.7 < p_T < 11 GeV/c and excludes a maximal positive gluon polarization in the proton.     High pTp_{T} non-photonic electron production in pp+pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

    We present the measurement of non-photonic electron production at high transverse momentum (pT>p_T > 2.5 GeV/cc) in pp + pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV using data recorded during 2005 and 2008 by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured cross-sections from the two runs are consistent with each other despite a large difference in photonic background levels due to different detector configurations. We compare the measured non-photonic electron cross-sections with previously published RHIC data and pQCD calculations. Using the relative contributions of B and D mesons to non-photonic electrons, we determine the integrated cross sections of electrons (e++e2\frac{e^++e^-}{2}) at 3 GeV/c<pT< c < p_T <~10 GeV/cc from bottom and charm meson decays to be dσ(Be)+(BDe)dyeye=0{d\sigma_{(B\to e)+(B\to D \to e)} \over dy_e}|_{y_e=0} = 4.0±0.5\pm0.5({\rm stat.})±1.1\pm1.1({\rm syst.}) nb and dσDedyeye=0{d\sigma_{D\to e} \over dy_e}|_{y_e=0} = 6.2±0.7\pm0.7({\rm stat.})±1.5\pm1.5({\rm syst.}) nb, respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 17 figure

    Evolution of the differential transverse momentum correlation function with centrality in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    We present first measurements of the evolution of the differential transverse momentum correlation function, {\it C}, with collision centrality in Au+Au interactions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV. {\it C} exhibits a strong dependence on collision centrality that is qualitatively similar to that of number correlations previously reported. We use the observed longitudinal broadening of the near-side peak of {\it C} with increasing centrality to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, η/s\eta/s, of the matter formed in central Au+Au interactions. We obtain an upper limit estimate of η/s\eta/s that suggests that the produced medium has a small viscosity per unit entropy.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, STAR paper published in Phys. Lett.

    Longitudinal scaling property of the charge balance function in Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV

    We present measurements of the charge balance function, from the charged particles, for diverse pseudorapidity and transverse momentum ranges in Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe that the balance function is boost-invariant within the pseudorapidity coverage [-1.3, 1.3]. The balance function properly scaled by the width of the observed pseudorapidity window does not depend on the position or size of the pseudorapidity window. This scaling property also holds for particles in different transverse momentum ranges. In addition, we find that the width of the balance function decreases monotonically with increasing transverse momentum for all centrality classes.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Measurement of the Bottom contribution to non-photonic electron production in p+pp+p collisions at s\sqrt{s} =200 GeV

    The contribution of BB meson decays to non-photonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, in p+pp+p collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between non-photonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted BB decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT5p_{T} \geq 5 GeV/cc. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from BB and DD meson decays. The result indicates that BB meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pTp_{T}.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PR

    Deaminase-independent inhibition of HIV-1 reverse transcription by APOBEC3G

    APOBEC3G (A3G), a host protein that inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcription and replication in the absence of Vif, displays cytidine deaminase and single-stranded (ss) nucleic acid binding activities. HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein (NC) also binds nucleic acids and has a unique property, nucleic acid chaperone activity, which is crucial for efficient reverse transcription. Here we report the interplay between A3G, NC and reverse transcriptase (RT) and the effect of highly purified A3G on individual reactions that occur during reverse transcription. We find that A3G did not affect the kinetics of NC-mediated annealing reactions, nor did it inhibit RNase H cleavage. In sharp contrast, A3G significantly inhibited all RT-catalyzed DNA elongation reactions with or without NC. In the case of (−) strong-stop DNA synthesis, the inhibition was independent of A3G's catalytic activity. Fluorescence anisotropy and single molecule DNA stretching analyses indicated that NC has a higher nucleic acid binding affinity than A3G, but more importantly, displays faster association/disassociation kinetics. RT binds to ssDNA with a much lower affinity than either NC or A3G. These data support a novel mechanism for deaminase-independent inhibition of reverse transcription that is determined by critical differences in the nucleic acid binding properties of A3G, NC and RT
